Coulomb-driven flow of a dielectric liquid subject to charge injection by a sharp electrode

    Get PDF
Injection of charge by a sharp electrode into a surrounding dielectric liquid leads to Coulomb forces that set the liquid into motion. An analysis is presented of this motion in a small region around the edge of the electrode, which determines the injected current as a function of the far electric potential seen by this region. By using an injection law appropriate for nonpolar liquids, the analysis predicts an electric current that increases first exponentially and then as the power 7 3 of the harmonic part of the electric potential, sometimes with a range of multiplicity in betweenMinisterio de Ciencia e Innovación PB95-0008

Generalising Exponential Distributions Using an Extended Marshall-Olkin Procedure

    Get PDF
This paper presents a three-parameter family of distributions which includes the common exponential and the Marshall–Olkin exponential as special cases. This distribution exhibits a monotone failure rate function, which makes it appealing for practitioners interested in reliability, and means it can be included in the catalogue of appropriate non-symmetric distributions to model these issues, such as the gamma and Weibull three-parameter families. Given the lack of symmetry of this kind of distribution, various statistical and reliability properties of this model are examined. Numerical examples based on real data reflect the suitable behaviour of this distribution for modelling purposes

Contagious statistical distributions: k-connections and applications in infectious disease environments.

    Get PDF
Contagious statistical distributions are a valuable resource for managing contagion by means of k–connected chains of distributions. Binomial, hypergeometric, Po´ lya, uniform distributions with the same values for all parameters except sample size n are known to be strongly associated. This paper describes how the relationship can be obtained via factorial moments, simplifying the process by including novel elements. We describe the properties of these distributions and provide examples of their real–world application, and then define a chain of k–connected distributions, which generalises the relationship among samples of any size for a given population and the Po´lya urn model

Practical considerations for clinical use of mesenchymal stem cells: From the laboratory to the horse

    Get PDF
Since the clinical use of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) for treating musculoskeletal injuries is gaining popularity, practitioners should be aware of the factors that may affect MSCs from tissue harvesting for MSC isolation to cell delivery into the injury site. This review provides equine practitioners with up-to-date, practical knowledge for the treatment of equine patients using MSCs. A brief overview of laboratory procedures affecting MSCs is provided, but the main focus is on shipping conditions, routes of administration, injection methods, and which commonly used products can be combined with MSCs and which products should be avoided as they have deleterious effects on cells. There are still several knowledge gaps regarding MSC-based therapies in horses. Therefore, it is important to properly manage the factors which are currently known to affect MSCs, to further strengthen the evidence basis of this treatment

To access the final edited and published work see https://doi.org/10.1016/j.aquaculture.2010.06.028Fish are frequently exposed to anaesthetics since their use is necessary in several aquaculture procedures. The aim of this study was to investigate the existence of day night differences in toxicity and effectiveness of a common fish anaesthetic (MS-222) in juvenile gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata), determining the induction time of anaesthesia and subsequent recovery by a novel video-recording system. Our results showed that MS-222 toxicity was significantly higher at ML (mid-light) (LC50=85.5 mg/L) than at MD (mid-darkness) (LC50=107.6 mg/L) (trimmed Spearman-Karber method). In addition, when fish were exposed to a sublethal but effective MS-222 concentration (65 mg/L), 7 min passed before 50% a reduction in swimming activity was observed at ML compared to the 9 min required at MD. As regards recovery, fish showed activity levels similar to basal levels 10 min after MS-222 removal at ML, but only 6 min at MD. These results indicated that both toxicity and effectiveness were higher during the day than at night, coinciding with the diurnal activity pattern displayed by seabream, which should be taken into account when designing and applying daily protocols for anaesthesia in aquacultur

New analytical method for determination of phthalates in wastewater by on line lc-gc-ms using the totad interface and fraction collector

    Get PDF
There is an increasing demand for automatic, reliable and sensitive analytical methods for determining trace levels of phthalic acid esters (PAEs) in environmental samples. While on line coupled liquid chromatography-gas chromatography (LC-GC) has been proof to be a powerful tool for trace-level analyses in complex matrices, the present work presents a new totally automated on line LC-GC method, using the Through Oven Transfer Adsorption Desorption (TOTAD) interface, for the analysis of four of the main phthalates, dibuthyl phthalate (DBP), diethyl phthalate (DEP), dimethyl phthalate (DMP) and diethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP), in a matrix as complex as leachate. The sample is directly injected into the LC injector valve with no sample pretreatment other than simple filtration. The LC step separates the target analytes from matrix interference. Two different LC fractions are collected in a purposely designed fraction collector and then transferred to the TOTAD interface, which concentrates the analytes, totally eliminates the solvent and transfers the analytes to the GC-MS system, where the analysis is carried out. The LOD of the method varied from 0.1 µg/L (DEHP) to 1.4 µg/L (DMP), RSD for retention time below 0.14% and for absolute peak areas below 12% and linearity from 1 µg/L to 1000 µg/L (R2 > 0.99), except in the case of DEHP (linearity from 1 to 250 µg/L, R2 = 0.94). The method was applied to the analysis of the target analytes in samples collected from a municipal solid waste (MSW) landfill in Rosario (Argentina).Fil: Espinosa, F.J..
