Correlation between magnetic interactions and domain structure in A1 FePt ferromagnetic thin films
We have investigated the relationship between the domain structure and the
magnetic interactions in a series of FePt ferromagnetic thin films of varying
thickness. As-made films grow in the magnetically soft and chemically
disordered A1 phase that may have two distinct domain structures. Above a
critical thickness nm the presence of an out of plane
anisotropy induces the formation of stripes, while for planar
domains occur.
Magnetic interactions have been characterized using the well known DCD-IRM
remanence protocols, plots, and magnetic viscosity measurements. We
have observed a strong correlation between the domain configuration and the
sign of the magnetic interactions. Planar domains are associated with positive
exchange-like interactions, while stripe domains have a strong negative
dipolar-like contribution. In this last case we have found a close correlation
between the interaction parameter and the surface dipolar energy of the stripe
domain structure. Using time dependent magnetic viscosity measurements, we have
also estimated an average activation volume for magnetic reversal, nm which is approximately
independent of the film thickness or the stripe period.Comment: 25 pages, 11 figure
Fabrication of poly(lactic acid) – poly(ethylene oxide) electrospun membranes with controlled micro to nanofiber sizes
Biodegradable poly(L-lactide acid) (PLLA) nanofiber membranes were prepared by electrospinning of PLLA and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO). The selective removal of PEO by water allows to obtain smaller fiber diameters and to increase the porosity of the membranes in comparison to PLLA membranes obtained under the same electrospinning conditions. After removal of PEO membranes with fiber sizes of 260 nm and average porosity close to 80% are obtained. Thermal and infrared results confirm the poor miscibility of PLLA and PEO, with the PEO randomly distributed along the PLLA fibers. On the other, PLLA and PEO mixing strongly affect their respective degradation temperatures. The influence of the PEO in the electrospinning process is discussed and the results are correlated to the evolution of the PLLA fiber diameter
Population epigenetic divergence exceeds genetic divergence in the Eastern oyster Crassostrea virginica in the Northern Gulf of Mexico

While evolutionary divergence occurs through DNA sequence differences among populations, plastic divergence among populations may be generated by changes in the epigenome. Here, we present the results of a genome-wide comparison of DNA methylation patterns and genetic structure among four populations of Eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica) in the northern Gulf of Mexico. We used a combination of restriction site-associated DNA sequencing (RADseq) and reduced representation bisulfite sequencing (RRBS) to explore population structure, gene-wide averages of FST, and DNA methylation differences between oysters inhabiting four estuaries with unique salinity profiles. This approach identified significant population structure despite a moderately low FST (0.02) across the freshwater boundary of the Mississippi river, a finding that may reflect recent efforts to restore oyster stock populations. Divergence between populations in CpG methylation was greater than for divergence in FST, likely reflecting environmental effects on DNA methylation patterns. Assessment of CpG methylation patterns across all populations identified that only 26% of methylated DNA was intergenic; and, only 17% of all differentially methylated regions (DMRs) were within these same regions. DMRs within gene bodies between sites were associated with genes known to be involved in DNA damage repair, ion transport, and reproductive timing. Finally, when assessing the correlation between genomic variation and DNA methylation between these populations, we observed population-specific DNA methylation profiles that were not directly associated with single nucleotide polymorphisms or broader gene-body mean FST trends. Our results suggest that C. virginica may use DNA methylation to generate environmentally responsive plastic phenotypes and that there is more divergence in methylation than divergence in allele frequencies
Multi-dimension Tensor Factorization Collaborative Filtering Recommendation for Academic Profiles
The choice of academic itineraries and/or optional subjects to attend is not usually an easy decision since, in most cases, students lack the information, maturity, and knowledge required to make right decisions. This paper evaluates the support of Collaborative Systems for helping and guiding students in this decision-making process, considering the behavior and impact of these systems on the use of data different from the formal information the students usually use. For this purpose, the research applied the clustering based Multi-dimension Tensor Factorization approach to build a recommendation system and confirm that the increment in tensors improves the recommendation accuracy. As a result, this approach permits the user to take advantage of the contextual information to reduce the sparsity issue and increase the recommendation accuracy
Cardiorespiratory fitness: Reference on the six-minute walk test and oxygen consumption in adolescents from south-central chile
Indexación ScopusCardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) provides oxygen to the exercising muscles and is related to body adiposity, with cardiometabolic variables. The aim was to develop reference values and a predictive model of CRF in Chilean adolescents. A total of 741 adolescents of both genders (15.7 years old) participated in a basic anthropometry, performance in the six-minute walk test (SMWT), and in Course Navette was measured. Percentiles were determined for the SMWT, for the ˙VO2max, and an equation was developed to estimate it. The validity of the equation was checked using distribution assumptions and the Bland–Altman diagram. The STATA v.14 program was used (p < 0.05). The 50th percentile values for males and females in the SMWT and in the ˙VO2max of Course Navette were, respectively, from 607 to 690 and from 630 to 641 m, and from 43.9 to 45 and from 37.5 to 31.5 mlO2·kg·min−1, for the range of 13 to 17 years. For its part, the model to predict ˙VO2max incorporated gender, heart rate, height, waist-to-height ratio (WHR), and distance in the SMWT (R2 = 0.62; estimation error = 0.38 LO2·min−1; p <0.001). Reference values can guide physical fitness in Chilean adolescents, and ˙VO2max was possible to predict from morphofunctional variables. © 2021 by the authors. ELABORACIÓN Y VALIDACIÓN DE UNA ESCALA PARA MEDIR EL MALTRATO EN PAREJAS (EMP)
La violencia íntima de parejas ha sido un fenómeno de reciente interés científico por sus consecuencias entre los miembros que la conforman, en su descendencia y en sus demás relaciones interpersonales. Su prevención y detección temprana son una prioridad académica y profesional. El presente estudio reporta la elaboración y validación de un nuevo instrumento para medir y revelar este fenómeno: la Escala de Maltrato en Parejas – EMP. En dos estudios sucesivos, se logró demostrar su validez y confiabilidad. En la primera versión (Piloto – Estudio 1), dirigida a parejas jóvenes [EMP(J)], era unidireccional en la detección del maltrato. En la segunda versión (Validación – Estudio 2), además de incluir la bidireccional del mismo, se agregó la medición del maltrato con el uso de medios virtuales (Tecnologías de Información y Comunicación – TICs, o Comunicación Mediada por Computadores – CMC). La versión final del EMP resultó tanto válida como confiable, además de identificar dos tipos diferentes de maltrato sexual: (1) por desvaloración y (2) por coacción. Se requiere continuar con procesos de validación concurrente con otros instrumentos que midan el fenómeno de la violencia en pareja, con variables similares en definición y contenido, al igual que con otros que midan procesos opuestos como las escalas que miden satisfacción en las relaciones interpersonales
Nonlinear Measures for Characterizing Rough Surface Morphologies
We develop a new approach to characterizing the morphology of rough surfaces
based on the analysis of the scaling properties of contour loops, i.e. loops of
constant height. Given a height profile of the surface we perform independent
measurements of the fractal dimension of contour loops, and the exponent that
characterizes their size distribution. Scaling formulas are derived and used to
relate these two geometrical exponents to the roughness exponent of a
self-affine surface, thus providing independent measurements of this important
quantity. Furthermore, we define the scale dependent curvature and demonstrate
that by measuring its third moment departures of the height fluctuations from
Gaussian behavior can be ascertained. These nonlinear measures are used to
characterize the morphology of computer generated Gaussian rough surfaces,
surfaces obtained in numerical simulations of a simple growth model, and
surfaces observed by scanning-tunneling-microscopes. For experimentally
realized surfaces the self-affine scaling is cut off by a correlation length,

The Milky Way Bulge: Observed properties and a comparison to external galaxies
The Milky Way bulge offers a unique opportunity to investigate in detail the
role that different processes such as dynamical instabilities, hierarchical
merging, and dissipational collapse may have played in the history of the
Galaxy formation and evolution based on its resolved stellar population
properties. Large observation programmes and surveys of the bulge are providing
for the first time a look into the global view of the Milky Way bulge that can
be compared with the bulges of other galaxies, and be used as a template for
detailed comparison with models. The Milky Way has been shown to have a
box/peanut (B/P) bulge and recent evidence seems to suggest the presence of an
additional spheroidal component. In this review we summarise the global
chemical abundances, kinematics and structural properties that allow us to
disentangle these multiple components and provide constraints to understand
their origin. The investigation of both detailed and global properties of the
bulge now provide us with the opportunity to characterise the bulge as observed
in models, and to place the mixed component bulge scenario in the general
context of external galaxies. When writing this review, we considered the
perspectives of researchers working with the Milky Way and researchers working
with external galaxies. It is an attempt to approach both communities for a
