The Minimal Phantom Sector of the Standard Model: Higgs Phenomenology and Dirac Leptogenesis
We propose the minimal, lepton-number conserving, SU(3)xSU(2)xU(1)
gauge-singlet, or phantom, extension of the Standard Model. The extension is
natural in the sense that all couplings are of O(1) or forbidden due to a
phantom sector global U(1)_D symmetry, and basically imitates the standard
Majorana see-saw mechanism. Spontaneous breaking of the U(1)_D symmetry
triggers consistent electroweak gauge symmetry breaking only if it occurs at a
scale compatible with small Dirac neutrino masses and baryogenesis through
Dirac leptogenesis. Dirac leptogenesis proceeds through the usual
out-of-equilibrium decay scenario, leading to left and right-handed neutrino
asymmetries that do not fully equilibrate after they are produced. The model
contains two physical Higgs bosons and a massless Goldstone boson. The
existence of the Goldstone boson suppresses the Higgs to bb branching ratio and
instead the Higgs bosons will mainly decay to invisible Goldstone and/or to
visible vector boson pairs. In a representative scenario, we estimate that with
30 fb^-1 integrated luminosity, the LHC could discover this invisibly decaying
Higgs, with mass ~120 GeV. At the same time a significantly heavier, partner
Higgs boson with mass ~210 GeV could be found through its vector boson decays.
Electroweak constraints as well as astrophysical and cosmological implications
are analysed and discussed.Comment: 21 pages, 4 figures. Corrected typos and added references. To appear

Cosmology With Non-Minimally Coupled K-Field
We consider non-minimally coupled (with gravity) scalar field with
non-canonical kinetic energy. The form of the kinetic term is of
Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) form.We study the early evolution of the universe when
it is sourced only by the k-field, as well as late time evolution when both the
matter and k-field are present. For the k-field, we have considered constant
potential as well as potential inspired from Boundary String Field Theory
(B-SFT). We show that it is possible to have inflationary solution in early
time as well as late time accelerating phase. The solutions also exhibit
attractor property in a sense that it does not depend on the initial conditions
for a certain values of the parameters.Comment: 10 pages, Revtex style, 14 eps figures, to appear in General

A hepatitis C virus DNA vaccine encoding a secreted, oligomerized form of envelope proteins is highly immunogenic and elicits neutralizing antibodies in vaccinated mice
Hepatitis C virus (HCV) persistently infects approximately 71 million people globally. To prevent infection a vaccine which elicits neutralizing antibodies against the virus envelope proteins (E1/E2) which are required for entry into host cells is desirable. DNA vaccines are cost-effective to manufacture globally and despite recent landmark studies highlighting the therapeutic efficacy of DNA vaccines in humans against cervical cancer, DNA vaccines encoding E1/E2 developed thus far are poorly immunogenic. We now report a novel and highly immunogenic DNA vaccination strategy that incorporates secreted E1 and E2 (sE1 and sE2) into oligomers by fusion with the oligomerization domain of the C4b-binding protein, IMX313P. The FDA approved plasmid, pVax, was used to encode sE1, sE2, or sE1E2 with or without IMX313P, and intradermal prime-boost vaccination studies in BALB/c mice showed that vaccines encoding IMX313P were the most effective in eliciting humoral and cell-mediated immunity against the envelope proteins. Further boosting with recombinant E1E2 proteins but not DNA nor virus-like particles (VLPs) expressing E1E2 increased the immunogenicity of the DNA prime-boost regimen. Nevertheless, the antibodies generated by the homologous DNA prime-boost vaccinations more effectively inhibited the binding of VLPs to target cells and neutralized transduction with HCV pseudoparticles (HCVpp) derived from different genotypes including genotypes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6. This report provides the first evidence that IMX313P can be used as an adjuvant for E1/E2-based DNA vaccines and represents a translatable approach for the development of a HCV DNA vaccine.Makutiro Ghislain Masavuli, Danushka K. DBI Inflation in the Tip Region of a Warped Throat
Previous work on DBI inflation, which achieves inflation through the motion
of a brane as it moves through a warped throat compactification, has
focused on the region far from the tip of the throat. Since reheating and other
observable effects typically occur near the tip, a more detailed study of this
region is required. To investigate these effects we consider a generalized warp
throat where the warp factor becomes nearly constant near the tip. We find that
it is possible to obtain 60 or more e-folds in the constant region, however
large non-gaussianities are typically produced due to the small sound speed of
fluctuations. For a particular well-studied throat, the Klebanov-Strassler
solution, we find that inflation near the tip may be generic and it is
difficult to satisfy current bounds on non-gaussianity, but other throat
solutions may evade these difficulties.Comment: 26 pages, 1 figure. v1. references added, typos corrected v2.

Warped Reheating in Multi-Throat Brane Inflation
We investigate in some quantitative details the viability of reheating in
multi-throat brane inflationary scenarios by estimating and comparing the time
scales for the various processes involved. We also calculate within
perturbative string theory the decay rate of excited closed strings into KK
modes and compare with that of their decay into gravitons; we find that in the
inflationary throat the former is preferred. We also find that over a small but
reasonable range of parameters of the background geometry, these KK modes will
preferably tunnel to another throat (possibly containing the Standard Model)
instead of decaying to gravitons due largely to their suppressed coupling to
the bulk gravitons. Once tunneled, the same suppressed coupling to the
gravitons again allows them to reheat the Standard Model efficiently. We also
consider the effects of adding more throats to the system and find that for
extra throats with small warping, reheating still seems viable.Comment: 29 pages, 4 figures, discussions on closed string decay expanded,

Ethological activities, ruminal parameters and weight gain of calves supplemented with different amounts of sodium chloride
The daily weight gain, behavioral activities (grazing, ruminating and water consumption) and the number of rumen protozoa, pH, NH3, and the osmolarity of rumen fluid was evaluated for four groups of six calves HPB/Zebu submitted to daily intake of 15, 30, 60 and 90g of NaCl during 135 days (9th Jan. to 24th May 2008).Throughout the experimental period the calves were in perfect health condition and did not show any signs suggestive of chronic sodium poisoning. There was no significant difference in average daily gain of the calves as the intake of NaCl increased. No significant behavioral changes were observed in the activities of grazing and rumination. However, there was a noticeable change in the frequency of water consumption in the calves that ingested 90g/d of NaCl; they went more often to the trough and drank more water than the group that ingested only 15g sodium chloride/d. The osmolarity of ruminal liquid was higher in the group of calves fed 90g of NaCl/d. The pH, NH3 concentration and number of rumen protozoa was within the normal range
Demonstration of the temporal matter-wave Talbot effect for trapped matter waves
We demonstrate the temporal Talbot effect for trapped matter waves using
ultracold atoms in an optical lattice. We investigate the phase evolution of an
array of essentially non-interacting matter waves and observe matter-wave
collapse and revival in the form of a Talbot interference pattern. By using
long expansion times, we image momentum space with sub-recoil resolution,
allowing us to observe fractional Talbot fringes up to 10th order.Comment: 17 pages, 7 figure
Longitudinal double-spin asymmetry and cross section for inclusive neutral pion production at midrapidity in polarized proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 200 GeV
We report a measurement of the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry A_LL and
the differential cross section for inclusive Pi0 production at midrapidity in
polarized proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 200 GeV. The cross section was
measured over a transverse momentum range of 1 < p_T < 17 GeV/c and found to be
in good agreement with a next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculation.
The longitudinal double-spin asymmetry was measured in the range of 3.7 < p_T <
11 GeV/c and excludes a maximal positive gluon polarization in the proton. The
mean transverse momentum fraction of Pi0's in their parent jets was found to be
around 0.7 for electromagnetically triggered events.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. D (RC
Kaon Production and Kaon to Pion Ratio in Au+Au Collisions at \snn=130 GeV
Mid-rapidity transverse mass spectra and multiplicity densities of charged
and neutral kaons are reported for Au+Au collisions at \snn=130 GeV at RHIC.
The spectra are exponential in transverse mass, with an inverse slope of about
280 MeV in central collisions. The multiplicity densities for these particles
scale with the negative hadron pseudo-rapidity density. The charged kaon to
pion ratios are and
for the most central collisions. The ratio is lower than the same
ratio observed at the SPS while the is higher than the SPS result.
Both ratios are enhanced by about 50% relative to p+p and +p
collision data at similar energies.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, 1 tabl
