The Transatlantic Renewal of Textual Practices: Philology, Religion, and Classicism in Madame de Staël, Herder, and Emerson
This dissertation demonstrates how the rise of historical criticism in Germany transformed practices of reading, writing, and public address in the related fields of classicism and biblical criticism in a transnational context. In the late-eighteenth and early-nineteenth centuries, writers on both sides of the Atlantic rendered these practices foundational to the goals of self-formation, cultural and spiritual renewal, and educational reform. In this process, Germaine de Staël's De l'Allemagne (1814) played a key role in disseminating new historically informed modes of teaching, preaching, translating, and reconstructing secular and religious texts among Transcendentalists. I show that her cultural study epitomizes crucial characteristics and functions of the historically informed textual practices that Johann Gottfried Herder's works articulated paradigmatically in Germany and which we find refracted in reviews, addresses, essays, and translations by many Antebellum American scholars, especially Ralph Waldo Emerson

(Autor
Stem rot and wilt on Euonymus
From the symptomatic stem base a fungus belonging to the genus Calonectria (anamorph: Cylindrocladium) was isolated (isolate JKI 2140). The isolate was morphologically very similar to Calonectria colhounii as well as to Ca. fujianensis and Ca. pseudocolhounii, except for the larger conidia. Sequence analysis of genes (ITS, BT, TEF-1α, HIS3) showed high similarity to Ca. colhounii, Ca. eucalypti, Ca. fujianensis and Ca. pseudocolhounii. The taxonomic status of the fungal isolate from E. japonica is not yet clear. It belongs to the complex Ca. colhounii but a definitive allocation to or separation from a known Calonectria species is not possible on the basis of a single isolate. The fungus is provisionally named Calonectria colhounii compl. The pathogenicity of the fungus was tested on E. japonica and E. fortunei. The disease symptoms originally observed on field plants of E. japonica were reproduced and the fungus was re-isolated. Thus the pathogenicity of isolate JKI 2140 on both Euonymus species is proved. Since the first occurrence of this infestation there were no further notifications of stem canker and wilt on Euonymus spp. in Germany. Therefore the importance of this pathogen on Euonymus is considered to be low. DOI: 10.5073/JfK.2015.10.01, https://doi.org/10.5073/JfK.2015.10.0
FINITE ELEMENT METHOD FOR NONLINEAR EDDY CURRENT PROBLEMS IN POWER TRANSFORMERS
An efficient finite element method to take account of the nonlinearity of the magnetic materials
when analyzing three dimensional eddy current problems is presented in this paper. The problem is
formulated in terms of vector and scalar potentials approximated by edge and node based finite element
basis functions. The application of Galerkin techniques leads to a large, nonlinear system of ordinary
differential equations in the time domain.
The excitations are assumed to be time-periodic and the steady state periodic solution is of
interest only. This is represented in the frequency domain as a Fourier series for each finite element
degree of freedom and a finite number of harmonics is to be determined, i.e. a harmonic balance method
is applied. Due to the nonlinearity, all harmonics are coupled to each other, so the size of the equation
system is the number of harmonics times the number of degrees of freedom.
The harmonics would be decoupled if the problem were linear, therefore, a special nonlinear
iteration technique, the fixed-point method is used to linearize the equations by selecting a timeindependent
permeability distribution, the so called fixed-point permeability in each nonlinear iteration
step. This leads to uncoupled harmonics within these steps resulting in two advantages. One is that each
harmonic is obtained by solving a system of algebraic equations with only as many unknowns as there
are finite element degrees of freedom. A second benefit is that these systems are independent of each
other and can be solved in parallel. The appropriate selection of the fixed point permeability accelerates
the convergence of the nonlinear iteration.
The method is applied to the analysis of a large power transformer. The solution of the
electromagnetic field allows the computation of various losses like eddy current losses in the massive
conducting parts (tank, clamping plates, tie bars, etc.) as well as the specific losses in the laminated parts
(core, tank shielding, etc.). The effect of the presence of higher harmonics on these losses is
investigated
Direct assessment of the proton affinity of individual surface hydroxyls with non-contact atomic force microscopy
The state of protonation/deprotonation of surfaces has far-ranging
implications in all areas of chemistry: from acid-base catalysis and the
electro- and photocatalytic splitting of water, to the behavior of
minerals and biochemistry. The acidity of a molecule or a surface site
is described by its proton affinity (PA) and pK value (the
negative logarithm of the equilibrium constant of the proton transfer reaction
in solution). For solids, in contrast to molecules, the acidity of individual
sites is difficult to assess. For mineral surfaces such as oxides they are
estimated by semi-empirical concepts such as bond-order valence sums, and
also increasingly modeled with first-principles molecular dynamics
simulations. Currently such predictions cannot be tested - the
experimental measures used for comparison are typically average quantities
integrated over the whole surface or, in some cases, individual crystal
facets, such as the point of zero charge (pzc). Here we assess
individual hydroxyls on InO(111), a model oxide with four different
types of surface oxygen atoms, and probe the strength of their hydrogen bond
with the tip of a non-contact atomic force microscope (AFM). The force curves
are in quantitative agreement with density-functional theory (DFT)
calculations. By relating the results to known proton affinities and
pK values of gas-phase molecules, we provide a direct measure of
proton affinity distributions at the atomic scale
