L-functions with large analytic rank and abelian varieties with large algebraic rank over function fields
The goal of this paper is to explain how a simple but apparently new fact of
linear algebra together with the cohomological interpretation of L-functions
allows one to produce many examples of L-functions over function fields
vanishing to high order at the center point of their functional equation. The
main application is that for every prime p and every integer g>0 there are
absolutely simple abelian varieties of dimension g over Fp(t) for which the BSD

Experimental determination of magnesia and silica solubilities in graphite-saturated and redox-buffered high-pressure COH fluids in equilibrium with forsterite + enstatite and magnesite + enstatite
We experimentally investigated the dissolution of forsterite, enstatite and magnesite in graphite-saturated COH fluids, synthesized using a rocking piston cylinder apparatus at pressures from 1.0 to 2.1 GPa and temperatures from 700 to 1200 \ub0C. Synthetic forsterite, enstatite, and nearly pure natural magnesite were used as starting materials. Redox conditions were buffered by Ni\u2013NiO\u2013H2O (\u394FMQ = 12\u20090.21 to 12\u20091.01), employing a double-capsule setting. Fluids, binary H2O\u2013CO2 mixtures at the P, T, and fO2 conditions investigated, were generated from graphite, oxalic acid anhydrous (H2C2O4) and water. Their dissolved solute loads were analyzed through an improved version of the cryogenic technique, which takes into account the complexities associated with the presence of CO2-bearing fluids. The experimental data show that forsterite\u2009+\u2009enstatite solubility in H2O\u2013CO2 fluids is higher compared to pure water, both in terms of dissolved silica (mSiO2\u2009=\u20091.24 mol/kgH2O versus mSiO2\u2009=\u20090.22 mol/kgH2O at P\u2009=\u20091 GPa, T\u2009=\u2009800 \ub0C) and magnesia (mMgO\u2009=\u20091.08 mol/kgH2O versus mMgO\u2009=\u20090.28 mol/kgH2O) probably due to the formation of organic C\u2013Mg\u2013Si complexes. Our experimental results show that at low temperature conditions, a graphite-saturated H2O\u2013CO2 fluid interacting with a simplified model mantle composition, characterized by low MgO/SiO2 ratios, would lead to the formation of significant amounts of enstatite if solute concentrations are equal, while at higher temperatures these fluid, characterized by MgO/SiO2 ratios comparable with that of olivine, would be less effective in metasomatizing the surrounding rocks. However, the molality of COH fluids increases with pressure and temperature, and quintuplicates with respect to the carbon-free aqueous fluids. Therefore, the amount of fluid required to metasomatize the mantle decreases in the presence of carbon at high P\u2013T conditions. COH fluids are thus effective carriers of C, Mg and Si in the mantle wedge up to the shallowest level of the upper mantle

Zusammenfassung: Entzündliche Erkrankungen der Wirbelsäule und des Myelons haben vielfältige Ursachen. Mit Ausnahme der degenerativ bedingten entzündlichen Veränderungen der Wirbelsäule selbst sind bakteriell, viral oder autoimmun vermittelte Entzündungen eher selten. Letztere sind klinisch und bildgebend auch schwer zu evaluieren, können aber wichtige Ursachen für Schmerzen und funktionelle Störungen sein. Dies gilt besonders, wenn sie unbehandelt bleiben. Bei schweren Krankheitsverläufen wie der Spondylodiszitis oder der rheumatoiden Arthritis kann es zu ernsten neurologischen Ausfällen kommen, v.a. bei fortschreitender intraspinaler Beteiligung. Entzündungen des Myelons selbst können durch konventionelle Röntgenuntersuchungen nicht und mit der Computertomographie nur selten festgestellt werden. Hier ist die Magnetresonanztomographie das bildgebende Verfahren der ersten Wahl, um Veränderungen des Myelons frühzeitig und differenziert zu beurteile
Cryogenic 9Be+ Penning trap for precision measurements with (anti-)protons
Cooling and detection schemes using laser cooling and methods of quantum logic can contribute to high precision CPT symmetry tests in the baryonic sector. This work introduces an experiment to sympathetically cool protons and antiprotons using the Coulomb interaction with a 9Be+ ion trapped in a nearby but separate potential well. We have designed and set up an apparatus to show such coupling between two identical ions for the first time in a Penning trap. In this paper, we present evidence for successful loading and Doppler cooling of clouds and single ions. Our coupling scheme has applications in a range of high-precision measurements in Penning traps and has the potential to substantially improve motional control in these experiments
UV/Optical Detections of Candidate Tidal Disruption Events by GALEX and CFHTLS
We present two luminous UV/optical flares from the nuclei of apparently
inactive early-type galaxies at z=0.37 and 0.33 that have the radiative
properties of a flare from the tidal disruption of a star. In this paper we
report the second candidate tidal disruption event discovery in the UV by the
GALEX Deep Imaging Survey, and present simultaneous optical light curves from
the CFHTLS Deep Imaging Survey for both UV flares. The first few months of the
UV/optical light curves are well fitted with the canonical t^(-5/3) power-law
decay predicted for emission from the fallback of debris from a tidally
disrupted star. Chandra ACIS X-ray observations during the flares detect soft
X-ray sources with T_bb= (2-5) x 10^5 K or Gamma > 3 and place limits on hard
X-ray emission from an underlying AGN down to L_X (2-10 keV) <~ 10^41 ergs/s.
Blackbody fits to the UV/optical spectral energy distributions of the flares
indicate peak flare luminosities of > 10^44-10^45 ergs/s. The temperature,
luminosity, and light curves of both flares are in excellent agreement with
emission from a tidally disrupted main sequence star onto a central black hole
of several times 10^7 msun. The observed detection rate of our search over ~
2.9 deg^2 of GALEX Deep Imaging Survey data spanning from 2003 to 2007 is
consistent with tidal disruption rates calculated from dynamical models, and we
use these models to make predictions for the detection rates of the next

Fast adiabatic transport of single laser-cooled Be ions in a cryogenic Penning trap stack
High precision mass and -factor measurements in Penning traps have enabled
groundbreaking tests of fundamental physics. The most advanced setups use
multi-trap methods, which employ transport of particles between specialized
trap zones. Present developments focused on the implementation of sympathetic
laser cooling will enable significantly shorter duty cycles and better
accuracies in many of these scenarios. To take full advantage of these
increased capabilities, we implement fast adiabatic transport concepts
developed in the context of trapped-ion quantum information processing in a
cryogenic Penning trap system. We show adiabatic transport of a single
ion initially cooled to 2 mK over a 2.2 cm distance within 15
ms and with less than 10\,mK energy gain at a peak velocity of 3 m/s. These
results represent an important step towards the implementation of quantum logic
spectroscopy in the \ppbar system. Applying these developments to other
multi-trap systems has the potential to considerably increase the data-sampling

Studying Side Effects of Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitors in a Juvenile Rat Model with Focus on Skeletal Remodeling
The tyrosine kinase (TK) inhibitor (TKI) imatinib provides a highly effective treatment for chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) targeting at the causative oncogenic TK BCR-ABL1. However, imatinib exerts off-target effects by inhibiting other TKs that are involved, e.g., in bone metabolism. Clinically, CML patients on imatinib exhibit altered bone metabolism as a side effect, which translates into linear growth failure in pediatric patients. As TKI treatment might be necessary for the whole life, long-term side effects exerted on bone and other developing organs in children are of major concern and not yet studied systematically. Here, we describe a new juvenile rat model to face this challenge. The established model mimics perfectly long-term side effects of TKI exposure on the growing bone in a developmental stage-dependent fashion. Thus, longitudinal growth impairment observed clinically in children could be unequivocally modeled and confirmed. In a “bench-to-bedside” manner, we also demonstrate that this juvenile animal model predicts side effects of newer treatment strategies by second generation TKIs or modified treatment schedules (continuous vs. intermittent treatment) to minimize side effects. We conclude that the results generated by this juvenile animal model can be directly used in the clinic to optimize treatment algorithms in pediatric patients
Rendering an Account: An Open-State Archive in Postgraduate Supervision
The paper begins with a brief account of the transformation of research degree studies under the pressures of global capitalism and neo-liberal governmentality. A parallel transformation is occurring in the conduct of research through the use of information and communication technologies. Yet the potential of ICTs to shape practices of surveillance or to produce new student-supervisor relations and enhance the processes of developing the dissertation has received almost no critical attention. As doctoral supervisor and student, we then describe the features and uses of a web-based open state archive of the student's work-in-progress, developed by the student and accessible to his supervisor. Our intention was to encourage more open conversations between data and theorising, student and supervisor, and ultimately between the student and professional community. However, we recognise that relations of accountability, as these have developed within a contemporary "audit revolution" (Power, 1994, 1997) in universities, create particular "lines of visibility" (Munro, 1996). Thus while the open-state archive may help to redefine in less managerial terms notions of quality, transparency, flexibility and accountability, it might also make possible greater supervisory surveillance. How should we think about the panoptical potential of this archive? We argue that the diverse kinds of interactional patterns and pedagogical intervention it encourages help to create shifting subjectivities. Moreover, the archive itself is multiple, in bringing together an array of diverse materials that can be read in various ways, by following multiple paths. It therefore constitutes a collage, which we identify as a mode of cognition and of accounting distinct from but related to argument and narrative. As a more "open" text (Iser, 1978) it has an indeterminacy which may render it less open to abuse for the technologies of managerial accountability
Discovery of superstrong, fading, iron line emission and double-peaked Balmer lines of the galaxy SDSSJ0952+2143 - the light echo of a huge flare
We report the discovery of superstrong, fading, high-ionization iron line
emission in the galaxy SDSSJ095209.56+214313.3 (SDSSJ0952+2143 hereafter),
which must have been caused by an X-ray outburst of large amplitude.
SDSSJ0952+2143 is unique in its strong multiwavelength variability; such a
broadband emission-line and continuum response has not been observed before.
The strong iron line emission is accompanied by unusual Balmer line emission
with a broad base, narrow core and double-peaked narrow horns, and strong HeII
emission. These lines, while strong in the SDSS spectrum taken in 2005, have
faded away significantly in new spectra taken in December 2007. Comparison of
SDSS, 2MASS, GALEX and follow-up GROND photometry reveals variability in the
NUV, optical and NIR band. Taken together, these unusual observations can be
explained by a giant outburst in the EUV--X-ray band, detected even in the
optical and NIR. The intense and variable iron, Helium and Balmer lines
represent the ``light echo'' of the flare, as it traveled through circumnuclear
material. The outburst may have been caused by the tidal disruption of a star
by a supermassive black hole. Spectroscopic surveys such as SDSS are well
suited to detect emission-line light echoes of such rare flare events.
Reverberation-mapping of these light echoes can then be used as a new and
efficient probe of the physical conditions in the circumnuclear material in
