A comparison of energy efficiency certification in housing: a study of the Chilean and Spanish cases
Faced with implementing policies that seek to improve the energy efficiency of housing and reduce the impact of CO2 emissions, several countries are introducing (unilaterally or by international agreement) energy certification systems that allow the effects of these policies to be evaluated. This study aims to compare the energy efficiency certification systems in Spain and Chile, identifying convergent and divergent parameters, enabling the existing gaps to be identified and improvements noted for both systems. To do so, 20 sample dwellings in Santiago de Chile were evaluated, along with the local calculating tools in both countries. The analysis considered the aspects of regulation, its reach, the characterization of the models and the necessary indicators. The comparison identified, among others, differences such as obligatory implementation of the system, a study of the existing buildings in the focus area, the prevailing indicators for evaluating the effects of the buildings, the low incidence of mixed energy systems in the Chilean system and the possibility of proposing and evaluating improvements in the Spanish system. As a result, higher energy requirements and greater CO2 emissions were identified in the Chilean system, reaching differences of 42 kWh/m2/year in consumption and 14 kgCO2/ m2/year in emissions with regard to the Spanish qualification. The results of this comparison have facilitated the identification of improvements that will increase the evaluation standards of the Chilean system.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version
Evaporative Mist Cooling as Heat Dissipation Technique: Experimental Assessment and Modelling
The severity of extreme weather conditions brought on by climate change are conditioning
quality of life, economic development, and well-being in today’s cities. Conventional measures have
been shown to be insu cient for tackling climate change and must be supplemented with ecofriendly
approaches. Hence, the scientific community’s endeavor to develop natural cooling techniques that
lower energy consumption while delivering satisfactory comfort levels. For its simplicity and low
cost, evaporative cooling has gained in popularity in recent years. The substantial cooling power to
be drawn from evaporative mist cooling, makes it an attractive alternative to conventional systems.
Research conducted to date on the technique has focused on producing cold air, whilst cooling
the water involved has been neither assessed nor experimentally validated. No readily applicable
simplified model for the system able to use operating parameters as input variables has been defined
either. The present study consequently aimed to experimentally assess the cooling power of the
evaporation of sprayed water and experimentally validate a simplified model to assess and design
such systems. The findings confirmed the cooling power of the technique, with declines in water
temperature of up to 6 C, and with it the promise a orded by this natural air conditioning method.
Finally, simplified model developed allows to evaluate this technique like a conventional system for
producing fresh water.Urban Innovation Actions by the CartujaQanat UIA03-30
Electronic Health Records Exploitation Using Artificial Intelligence Techniques
[Abstract] The exploitation of electronic health records (EHRs) has multiple utilities, from predictive
tasks and clinical decision support to pattern recognition. Artificial Intelligence (AI) allows to extract
knowledge from EHR data in a practical way. In this study, we aim to construct a Machine Learning
model from EHR data to make predictions about patients. Specifically, we will focus our analysis on
patients suffering from respiratory problems. Then, we will try to predict whether those patients will
have a relapse in less than 6, 12 or 18 months. The main objective is to identify the characteristics that
seem to increase the relapse risk. At the same time, we propose an exploratory analysis in search
of hidden patterns among data. These patterns will help us to classify patients according to their
specific conditions for some clinical variables.Centro de Investigación de Galicia CITIC is funded by Consellería de Educación, Universidades e Formación Profesional from Xunta de Galicia and European Union (European Regional Development Fund—FEDER Galicia 2014-2020 Program) by grant ED431G 2019/01. Data supporting the forecast of electricity generation capacity from non-conventional renewable energy sources in Colombia
The data included in this study was calculated based on data provided by the national project registry provided by the Colombian government. The data forecasts the evolution of the power generation capacity registered in non-conventional renewable energy source projects in three scenarios of implementation of the power generation capacity registered in the projects. Results can be used to benchmark non-conventional renewable energy sources in Colombia, interpret the effectiveness of renewable policies, and monitor the evolution of non-conventional renewable-based power generation. The data presented in the article relates to the research study: A look to the electricity generation from nonconventional renewable energy sources in Colombia
Improved in vitro angiogenic behavior on anodized titanium dioxide nanotubes
[Background]
Neovascularization over dental implants is an imperative requisite to achieve successful osseointegration onto implanted materials. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects on in vitro angiogenesis of anodized 70 nm diameter TiO2 nanotubes (NTs) on Ti6Al4V alloy synthesized and disinfected by means of a novel, facile, antibacterial and cost-effective method using super oxidized water (SOW). We also evaluated the role of the surface roughness and chemical composition of materials of materials on angiogenesis.[Methods]
The Ti6Al4V alloy and a commercially pure Ti were anodized using a solution constituted by SOW and fluoride as electrolyte. An acid-etched Ti6Al4V was evaluated to compare the effect of micro-surface roughness. Mirror-polished materials were used as control. Morphology, roughness, chemistry and wettability were assessed by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and using a professional digital camera. Bovine coronary artery endothelial cells (BCAECs) were seeded over the experimental surfaces for several incubation times. Cellular adhesion, proliferation and monolayer formation were evaluated by means of SEM. BCAEC viability, actin stress fibers and vinculin cellular organization, as well as the angiogenic receptors vascular endothelial growth factor 2 (VEGFR2) and endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) were measured using fluorescence microscopy.[Results]
The anodization process significantly increased the roughness, wettability and thickness of the oxidized coating. EDX analysis demonstrated an increased oxygen (O) and decreased carbon (C) content on the NTs of both materials. Endothelial behavior was solidly supported and improved by the NTs (without significant differences between Ti and alloy), showing that endothelial viability, adhesion, proliferation, actin arrangement with vinculin expression and monolayer development were evidently stimulated on the nanostructured surface, also leading to increased activation of VEGFR2 and eNOS on Ti6Al4V-NTs compared to the control Ti6Al4V alloy. Although the rougher alloy promoted BCAECs viability and proliferation, filopodia formation was poor.[Conclusion]
The in vitro results suggest that 70 nm diameter NTs manufactured by anodization and cleaned using SOW promotes in vitro endothelial activity, which may improve in vivo angiogenesis supporting a faster clinical osseointegration process. The authors wish to thank to the Program Number UABC-PTC-469 from PRODEP and Program Number 2058 of UABC for financial support.
