    Recommender System Validation Platform

    With most applications where recommender systems are used, it is impor- tant that they produce a better result than a system with no recommender, or one with a previous recommender. Deploying an untested system, even to a smaller user sample can be very costly if the system produces negative results. It is often in a developer’s interest to create several candidate systems. They need some way of comparing recommender systems before selecting one or a few to launch. While the methods of testing have been explored, and their statistical soundness motivated, in other work, it is not obvious how to do it in practice. This report describes the implementation of a modular and configurable framework, and analyses this framework with two different cases. The experimentation shows the power of how such a framework can be utilized to reduce overhead work when approaching evaluation of a new recommender system

    Domain specific traits predict achievement in music and multipotentiality

    Previous research shows that individuals choose careers based on the relative strengths of various traits. More debated however, is how specific combinations of traits predict individual differences in professional achievements. General intelligence is often proposed to be the best predictor of eminence, but some studies suggest that more specific traits can be relatively important when performance depends on specific skills and expertise. Here we identified a comprehensive set of variables relevant for music achievement (intelligence, auditory ability, absolute pitch, Big-five personality traits, psychosis proneness, music flow proneness, childhood environment and music practice), and tested how they predicted level of musicianship (non-musicians vs. amateur musicians vs. professional musicians) and number of achievements among professional musicians. We used web survey data from a total of 2150 individuals, and generalized additive models that can also reveal non-linear relationships. The results largely confirmed our three main hypotheses: (i) non-musicians, amateur musicians, and professional musicians are best differentiated by domain specific abilities, personality traits, and childhood factors; (ii) largely the same significant predictors are also associated with the number of creative achievements within professional musicians; (iii) individuals who reach a professional level in two domains (here science and music) possess the union of the relevant traits of both domains. In addition, many of the associations between predictors and achievement were non-linear. This study confirms that in music, and potentially in other occupational fields where performance relies on specific competences, domain relevant characteristics may be better predictors of engagement and creative achievement than broad traits

    Steady-state responses to concurrent melodies: source distribution, top-down, and bottom-up attention

    Humans can direct attentional resources to a single sound occurring simultaneously among others to extract the most behaviourally relevant information present. To investigate this cognitive phenomenon in a precise manner, we used frequency-tagging to separate neural auditory steady-state responses (ASSRs) that can be traced back to each auditory stimulus, from the neural mix elicited by multiple simultaneous sounds. Using a mixture of 2 frequency-tagged melody streams, we instructed participants to selectively attend to one stream or the other while following the development of the pitch contour. Bottom-up attention towards either stream was also manipulated with salient changes in pitch. Distributed source analyses of magnetoencephalography measurements showed that the effect of ASSR enhancement from top-down driven attention was strongest at the left frontal cortex, while that of bottom-up driven attention was dominant at the right temporal cortex. Furthermore, the degree of ASSR suppression from simultaneous stimuli varied across cortical lobes and hemisphere. The ASSR source distribution changes from temporal-dominance during single-stream perception, to proportionally more activity in the frontal and centro-parietal cortical regions when listening to simultaneous streams. These findings are a step forward to studying cognition in more complex and naturalistic soundscapes using frequency-tagging

    Musical aptitude is commonly measured using tasks that involve discrimination of different types of musical auditory stimuli. Performance on such different discrimination tasks correlates positively with each other and with intelligence. However, no study to date has explored these associations using a genetically informative sample to estimate underlying genetic and environmental influences. In the present study, a large sample of Swedish twins (N=10,500) was used to investigate the genetic architecture of the associations between intelligence and performance on three musical auditory discrimination tasks (rhythm, melody and pitch). Phenotypic correlations between the tasks ranged between 0.23 and 0.42 (Pearson r values). Genetic modelling showed that the covariation between the variables could be explained by shared genetic influences. Neither shared, nor non-shared environment had a significant effect on the associations. Good fit was obtained with a two-factor model where one underlying shared genetic factor explained all the covariation between the musical discrimination tasks and IQ, and a second genetic factor explained variance exclusively shared among the discrimination tasks. The results suggest that positive correlations among musical aptitudes result from both genes with broad effects on cognition, and genes with potentially more specific influences on auditory functions

    Investigating the relationship between childhood music practice and pitch-naming ability in professional musicians and a population-based twin sample

    The relationship between pitch-naming ability and childhood onset of music training is well established and thought to reflect both genetic predisposition and music training during a critical period. However, the importance of the amount of practice during this period has not been investigated. In a population sample of twins (N = 1447, 39% male, 367 complete twin pairs) and a sample of 290 professional musicians (51% male), we investigated the role of genes, age of onset of playing music and accumulated childhood practice on pitch-naming ability. A significant correlation between pitch-naming scores for monozygotic (r = .27, p < .001) but not dizygotic twin pairs (r = −.04, p = .63) supported the role of genetic factors. In professional musicians, the amount of practice accumulated between ages 6 and 11 predicted pitch-naming accuracy (p = .025). In twins, age of onset was no longer a significant predictor once practice was considered. Combined, these findings are in line with the notion that pitch-naming ability is associated with both genetic factors and amount of early practice, rather than just age of onset per se. This may reflect a dose–response relation between practice and pitch-naming ability in genetically predisposed individuals. Alternatively, children who excel at pitch-naming may have an increased tendency to practice

    Texto completo descargado desde TeseoA pesar de que la influencia de Macedonio Fernández en figuras de la talla de Jorge Luis Borges, Leopoldo Marechal, Julio Cortázar o Ricardo Piglia es a todas luces evidente, puede decirse que, a día de hoy, su pensamiento metafísico sigue siendo en su mayor parte desconocido por el gran público y poco o nada estudiado dentro del ámbito académico de la Filosofía. En este sentido, la presente Tesis Doctoral se aleja deliberadamente del análisis filológico y literario de la obra del autor argentino para centrarse casi de forma exclusiva en su vertiente metafísica. Así, tomando como principal referencia textual su novela Museo de la Novela de la Eterna, esta investigación trata de establecer ciertas «claves de lectura» que convertirían la magna obra de Macedonio Fernández en una suerte de Metafísica del Amor plena de conocimiento. Se plantea de este modo en las páginas de La Estancia Amorosa toda una fenomenología erótica, expuesta a través de cuarenta figuras del amor ¿e influenciadas metodológicamente por los Fragmentos de un discurso amoroso de Roland Barthes¿, en la que se intenta poner de manifiesto cómo Macedonio Fernández vislumbró metafísicamente la posibilidad de construir una identidad personal ¿otra identidad, identidad del Otro¿ fundamentada no ya por un ego cogito, sino por un ego-amans. Es desde este punto de vista particular que se pregunta: ¿qué sentido tiene pensar el amor cuando una «prohibición» esencial se impone desde sí, cuando es el amor mismo el que proscribe cualquier metalenguaje? ¿Acaso es imposible hablar del amor (y si fuese así, será posible, al menos, hablar amorosamente)? La inherente complejidad de tales cuestiones adquiere una gravedad aún mayor desde el momento en que se pone en juego el objetivo capital de esta investigación: desplegar un discurso erótico (o mejor: un Texto amoroso) capaz de dialogar con otro de su misma naturaleza -el de Macedonio Fernández-, dado que sólo un discurso erótico puede ser capaz de acoger a aquel que llega hablando amorosamente: sólo uno es el lenguaje del amor -mas no el lenguaje de uno solo-. Tomando así, es decir, en su justa consideración, las características que singularizan al texto macedoniano, este trabajo no se presenta en modo alguno en tanto que estudio filosófico que responde -o busca responder- a una pregunta tal como: ¿qué es el amor? (discurso retórico-esencialista del Fedro o El Banquete, por citar sólo algún ejemplo significativo). En cambio, frente a este planteamiento platónico de notable calado histórico, en todo momento se intenta afirmar en estas páginas la primacía de ¿¿¿¿ sobre ¿¿¿¿¿, así como, en la misma línea, también se desecha ab initio la posibilidad de estructurar el discurso atendiendo a un (supuesto) criterio objetivo de investigación filológica, datación y/o contextualización histórica o análisis literario, esto es, un criterio metodológico que tenga por «objeto» (en este caso concreto se trataría, sin duda, de un «objeto inexistente») la «obra» de Macedonio Fernández. Mucho más pertinente, por el contrario, será el subrayar cómo en el pensamiento del autor argentino cualquier posible intención de «hacer obra» queda anulada, inmediata y prácticamente, ante la preeminencia de su personalísima concepción de la escritura en tanto que pensamiento-en-curso, tal y como, sin ir más lejos, adviene constantemente al amor mismo

    This report is based on a study of Bergvik Skog's planted cuttings in 2018. The purpose of the study was to find out if Bergvik Skog is planting the right seedlings on their planting sites. By the right plant is meant that the planted plant is of the right tree species and provenance based on what is optimal on the area. Access to data from Bergvik's forest register and planting follow-ups was published in Excel format. The material included planting follow-ups contained data from the last 10 years. Sampling inventory of planting follow-ups was done over the entire Bergvik forest holdings. The purpose was to find out if the right tree species was planted at the determined site preference. When examining the forest register, the aim was to investigate whether the right choice of provenance was used based on what the research says. As well as find out if the right tree species has been planted based on the determined site preference for each site. During the period 2009-2018, a total of 602 planting sites within Bergvik Skog were inventoried. Of which two of these planting sites were decided to change the site preference. During the planting season in 2018, a total of 2850 plants were planted on Bergvik Skog's planting sites, of which 93 percent was planted with the right tree species. The result of the study showed that Bergviks Skog's use of provenance displacement is largely in line with what today's research recommends. Cultivation material for Norway spruce and Lodgepole pine is completely moved according to today's recommendations. 6.9 percent of the cultivation material for Scots pine with known provenance in altitude and latitude has been moved north and to a higher altitude, which does not follow the lines of research.Denna rapport bygger på en studie av Bergvik Skogs planterade hyggen under 2018. Syftet med undersökningen var att ta reda på om Bergvik Skog planterar rätt plantor på sina marker. Med rätt planta menas att den planterade plantan är av rätt trädslag och proveniens utifrån vad som är optimalt på trakten. Tillgång till data från Bergviks Skogs beståndsregister och föryngringsuppföljningar utgavs i Excelformat. Det material som innefattade föryngringsuppföljningarna innehöll data från de senaste 10 åren. Där stickprovsinventering av föryngringsuppföljningar gjorts över hela Bergviks Skogs skogsinnehav. Syftet var att kvalitetssäkra beståndsregistret genom att ta reda på hur många av trakterna som fått korrigerade SI-värden samt nytt bonitetsvisande trädslag. Vid granskning av beståndsregistret var målet att undersöka huruvida man använt sig av lämpligt proveniensval utifrån vad forskningen säger. Samt ta reda på om rätt trädslag blivit planterat utifrån det bonitetsvisande trädslag som är fastställt för varje trakt. Under perioden 2009 – 2018 så stickprovinventerades totalt 602 stycken trakter inom Bergvik Skog. På två av dessa trakter ändrade inventeraren bonitetsvisande trädslag. Under planteringssäsongen 2018 planterades totalt 2 850 hyggen på Bergvik Skogs marker. I 93 procent av fallen planterades rätt trädslag. I resultatet av studien framgick det att Bergviks Skogs användning av proveniensförflyttning ligger till stor del i linje med vad dagens forskning rekommenderar. Odlingsmaterial till gran och contorta förflyttas helt efter dagens rekommendationer. 6,9 procent av odlingsmaterialet till tall med känd härkomst i altitud och latitud har förflyttats norrut och till högre höjd vilket inte följer forskningens linjer

The majority of current window expressions are characterized/affected by a dominant frame. In this report alternative construction solutions will be presented and examined. The expression that the investigation strives for is a window in a wall-sandwich element of concrete and isolation with a minimal window frame or a non-visible attachment frame of the window. Specific material is chosen; glass and concrete. To give the reader full comprehension of the attempt, the expression is shown in illustrations. Interesting practical solutions are introduced with pictures and blueprints. The reader will get an insight in the demands and standards that have to be fulfilled for a good result. The window must fulfill the demands regarding a comfortable indoor climate, limit energy usage, decent light through put, etc. The materials and their characteristics that are utilized in the window and its framing are presented. Two construction proposals are presented and possible problems that may occur during their life-cycle are discussed further at the end of the report
