    The role of some micronutrients (eldervit) in the management of anaemic pregnant Nigerian women: A preliminary report

    CONTEXT: Anaemia continues to be a leading contributor to adverse reproductive outcomes in the developing countries. Although, the commonest cause of anaemia in pregnancy is iron deficiency, the enormous contributions of other micronutrients have been underestimated. As a result, the need to identify relevant micronutrients, whichcomplement iron, in haematopoiesis cannot be over emphasized.OBJECTIVES: To determine the effect of some micronutrients  (Cyanocobalamin, {B12}2500ìg, folic acid 0.7mg, niacin12mg and ascorbic acid 150mg; Eldervit-12) on some haematological parameters of anaemic pregnant women.SUBJECTS AND METHODS: ONE hundred and sixty two (162) anaemic pregnant women aged between 18-38 years were recruited into the study, and randomly divided into two groups. The test group was given two weeklyEldervit-12 injections intramuscularly, and the control group was given placebo (water for injection). Packed cell volume (PCV), reticulocyte count, white cell count and platelet count were estimated before and at the end of the injections using established methods. Student t-test was used to determine test for significance between the groups.RESULTS: The PCV increased significantly from 25.9± 2.2% and 26.2± 2.2% to 37.3% ± 2.6% and 32.4%± 1.9% respectively for test and control (P< 0.001). The PCV increase was however, significantly higher in the test when compared with the control (P< 0.001). The reticulocyte count also increased significantly from 2.2% ± 0.7% and 2.3%± 0.7% to 4.7%V 0.8 % and 2.9% ± 0.7 % respectively for test and control (P<0.001). But the test showed a more significant increase than the control (P< 0.001). There were no significant differences in the WBC and platelet counts (P> 0.05).CONCLUSION: Additional micronutrients play a vital role in the management of anaemia in pregnancy. Efforts should be made to qualify and quantify these in other to obtain the actual daily requirements.Key words (Anaemia, Pregnancy, Micronutrients, Haematological parameters.

    A study of Association of Mast Cell Count in Different Grades of Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma

    Background: Mast cells(MC) are cells of the immune cells which can secrete a variety of molecules. Many studies suggest that mast cells may either promote tumour growth in some types of cancer or may act in an opposite manner in other tumour types. Aim: To evaluate the association of mast cells in the different grades of Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma(OSCC). Material and methods: Fifteen diagnosed cases each of well, moderate and poorly differentiated OSCC were identified from the institutional archival material. Two slides each were made of 5 ÎĽm thickness and stained with Hematoxylin and eosin and 1% Toluidine blue stain. Each section was evaluated for mast cells in peritumoural, intratumoural locations and at the invasive front of the tumour. The results obtained were subjected to statistical evaluation by an SPSS version 19 using Chi square test, Anova and Post hoc Tuckey tests. Results: An inverse relation was observed between MC count with grade of the tumour with maximum MC located in the peritumoural area followed by the invasive front and the least in the intra tumoural areas. Conclusion: The results of the present study suggest that a decrease in MC count is associated with an advanced histologic grade of OSCC and hence a poorer prognosis, thus favouring the protective role of mast cells in OSCC.Keywords: Mast cells, Oral squamous cell carcinoma, Histological gradin

    Irreducible decomposition for tensor prodect representations of Jordanian quantum algebras

    Tensor products of irreducible representations of the Jordanian quantum algebras U_h(sl(2)) and U_h(su(1,1)) are considered. For both the highest weight finite dimensional representations of U_h(sl(2)) and lowest weight infinite dimensional ones of U_h(su(1,1)), it is shown that tensor product representations are reducible and that the decomposition rules to irreducible representations are exactly the same as those of corresponding Lie algebras.Comment: LaTeX, 14pages, no figur

    Enhanced direct oxidation of diclofenac (DCF) at a carbon paste electrode (CPE) modified with cellulose and its biodegradability by Scedosporium dehoogii

    A novel carbon paste electrode modified with cellulose fibers and dedicated to diclofenac electroanalysis was prepared, optimized, and used for the determination of the kinetic parameters of DCF biodegradation by a filamentous fungus. The electrochemical response of the modified CPE was compared to that of the unmodified. This study conducted by cyclic voltammetry and linear sweep voltammetry allowed the optimization of the cellulose fibers modified CPE in terms of absence/presence of cellulose fibers, accumulation time (250 s), and initial potential (- 0.4 V/Ag/AgCl). Interestingly, in these conditions, the limit of detection observed through linear sweet voltammetry was found to be as low as 0.020 µmol L-1. This electrode was then used to follow the degradation of DCF. Our results demonstrated that among species belonging to the Scedosporium genus, S. dehoogii displayed the best assets in our process in terms of growth temperature and ability to metabolize DCF. More precisely, DCF biodegradation using S. dehoogii in the process revealed a kinetic of order of 1, a kinetic constant k of 0.012 day-1 and a half time of 57.8 days for an initial concentration of DCF of 1.65 ± 0.05 mg L-1 and at a temperature of 25°C. This study constitutes a solid proof of concept for future developments of fungal wastewater treatments for bioremediation of DCF which is refractory to standard bacterial-based bioprocesses

    On some nonlinear extensions of the angular momentum algebra

    Deformations of the Lie algebras so(4), so(3,1), and e(3) that leave their so(3) subalgebra undeformed and preserve their coset structure are considered. It is shown that such deformed algebras are associative for any choice of the deformation parameters. Their Casimir operators are obtained and some of their unitary irreducible representations are constructed. For vanishing deformation, the latter go over into those of the corresponding Lie algebras that contain each of the so(3) unitary irreducible representations at most once. It is also proved that similar deformations of the Lie algebras su(3), sl(3,R), and of the semidirect sum of an abelian algebra t(5) and so(3) do not lead to associative algebras.Comment: 22 pages, plain TeX + preprint.sty, no figures, to appear in J.Phys.

    Beyond Prejudice as Simple Antipathy: Hostile and Benevolent Sexism Across Cultures

    The authors argue that complementary hostile and benevolent componen:s of sexism exist ac ro.ss cultures. Male dominance creates hostile sexism (HS). but men's dependence on women fosters benevolent sexism (BS)-subjectively positive attitudes that put women on a pedestal but reinforce their subordination. Research with 15,000 men and women in 19 nations showed that (a) HS and BS are coherenl constructs th at correlate positively across nations, but (b) HS predicts the ascription of negative and BS the ascription of positive traits to women, (c) relative to men, women are more likely to reject HS than BS. especially when overall levels of sexism in a culture are high, and (d) national averages on BS and HS predict gender inequal ity across nations. These results challenge prevailing notions of prejudice as an antipathy in that BS (an affectionate, patronizing ideology) reflects inequality and is a cross-culturally pervasive complement to HS

This is achieved in the SU(3) limit of the interacting boson model by considering higher-order interactions between the bosons.     Modeling recursive RNA interference.

    An important application of the RNA interference (RNAi) pathway is its use as a small RNA-based regulatory system commonly exploited to suppress expression of target genes to test their function in vivo. In several published experiments, RNAi has been used to inactivate components of the RNAi pathway itself, a procedure termed recursive RNAi in this report. The theoretical basis of recursive RNAi is unclear since the procedure could potentially be self-defeating, and in practice the effectiveness of recursive RNAi in published experiments is highly variable. A mathematical model for recursive RNAi was developed and used to investigate the range of conditions under which the procedure should be effective. The model predicts that the effectiveness of recursive RNAi is strongly dependent on the efficacy of RNAi at knocking down target gene expression. This efficacy is known to vary highly between different cell types, and comparison of the model predictions to published experimental data suggests that variation in RNAi efficacy may be the main cause of discrepancies between published recursive RNAi experiments in different organisms. The model suggests potential ways to optimize the effectiveness of recursive RNAi both for screening of RNAi components as well as for improved temporal control of gene expression in switch off-switch on experiments
