Probiotics are a potential tool for bacterial control in aquaculture (Pintado et al. 2011), decreasing the use of disinfectants and antibiotics and contributing to an ecosystem approach, which is more sustainable and respectful to the environment.Postprint (published version

Explaining the electoral performance of radical right parties in Europe (2008-2019): a fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis

Although radical right parties have been extensively examined since their significant breakthrough in the European political arena in the late 80s, not enough attention has been paid to the reasons behind their unequal electoral performance (or in other words, to the cross-national and within-national variations of their success). The aim of this research is to identify the different scenarios of electoral success for radical right parties in ten European countries between 2008 and 2019. Using fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA) -a case-oriented technique which allows in-depth comparative examination and which is based on the concepts of equifinality and causal heterogeneity-, we test the role of several causal conditions related to some demand-side and supply-side explanations. Our results reveal four sufficient causal paths that lead to the success of these parties, which confirm that they are able to achieve relevance in quite diverse contexts. The four paths combine both demand-side and supply-side conditions, but the role of the latter is qualitatively and quantitatively more important. In particular, we see how radical right parties can effectively take advantage of favorable political competitive dynamics, even in the absence of a priori favorable socio-economic contexts. Overall, our findings run contrary to some mechanistic explanations in the literature and support the idea of conceiving of the radical right parties as a complex, multiform phenomenon which needs to be understood through both theoretical and methodological innovations. The authors would like to thank Jorge Ramos for his valuable comments and suggestions on previous versions of this article.

    Get PDF

Design space exploration in heterogeneous platforms using OpenMP

In the fields of high performance computing (HPC) and embedded systems, the current trend is to employ heterogeneous platforms which integrate general purpose CPUs with specialized accelerators such as GPUs and FPGAs. Programming these architectures to approach their theoretical performance limits is a complex issue. In this article, we present a design methodology targeting heterogeneous platforms which combines a novel dynamic offloading mechanism for OpenMP and a scheduling strategy for assigning tasks to accelerator devices. The current OpenMP offloading model depends on the compiler supporting each target device, with many architectures still unsupported by the most popular compilers, such as GCC and Clang. In our approach, the software and/or hardware design flows for programming the accelerators are dissociated from the host OpenMP compiler and the device-specific implementations are dynamically loaded at runtime. Moreover, the assignment of tasks to computing resources is dynamically evaluated at runtime, with the aim of maximizing performance when using the available resources. The proposed methodology has been applied to a video processing system as a test case. The results demonstrate the flexibility of the proposal by exploiting different heterogeneous platforms and design particularities of devices, leading to a significant performance improvement. This work has been funded by FEDER/Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades – Agencia Estatal de Investigacion/TEC2017-86722-C4-3-R, also under the FitOptiVis Project (ECSEL2017-1-737451), which is funded by the EU (H2020) and Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades

Prevalence of Type VI Secretion System in Spanish Campylobacter jejuni Isolates.

    Get PDF
Infections from Campylobacter jejuni pose a serious public health problem and are now considered the leading cause of foodborne bacterial gastroenteritis throughout the world. Sequencing of C. jejuni genomes has previously allowed a number of loci to be identified, which encode virulence factors that aid survival and pathogenicity. Recently, a Type VI secretion system (T6SS) consisting of 13 conserved genes was described in C. jejuni strains and recognised to promote pathogenicity and adaptation to the environment. In this study, we determined the presence of this T6SS in 63 Spanish C. jejuni isolates from the food chain and urban effluents using whole-genome sequencing. Our findings demonstrated that nine (14%) strains harboured the 13 ORFs found in prototype strain C. jejuni 108. Further studies will be necessary to determine the prevalence and importance of T6SS-positive C. jejuni strains

This article analyzes how the cooperative principles and values of the social economy are the most pertinent to enhance a relational intelligence that overcomes the potential adverse effects for people and territories of the delegation of human relations in an artificial intelli gence built on capitalist values. The analysis is based on the case study of the French coopera tive digital platform Les Oiseaux de Passage, which supports different European heritage communities in enhancing their cultural heritage through activities linked to the tourism sec tor.
