"Urban Plant" light-weight solar system for parking and other urban double use applications
Innovations on all aspects of BOS and solar cell integration into the module are essential to further reducing the costs of PV electricity and substantial progress has been made in the past years. One other important aspect is the availability of space for PV power production, especially in densely occupied urban areas. Roof space is limited or only partially useable. A promising other application for PV power production in urban areas today are PV carports on parking lots, which require massive structures and foundations. The approach presented here is a newly developed PV plant which automatically stores the PV modules in a protection box in case of bad weather conditions. Avoiding bad weather conditions implies that only a fraction of the mechanical load is present on the PV modules and the structure, enabling light weight structural design. The newly developed PV plant is folding the PV generator into a protection box and will pull out the PV generator, carried on two supporting cables for operation during good weather conditions. An innovative autonomous control system was developed based on local meteo sensors and regional weather information. The PV modules of the Urban Plant are mounted six meters above a parking lot with the benefit of full double use of the land below. Thus a PV system has been built with currently 52 kW nominal power, 16 meter wide, with a folding roof of PV modules expanding 24 meters in one direction. The system can be extended to 104 kWp with a second folding roof expanding into the other direction. As special PV system design was developed with a light weight PV generator using module laminates with special mounting elements. Moreover the system comprises innovative string wiring and inverters that can be also integrated into the safety box. A first 250kW commercial system is scheduled to be set into operation in Jan 2014 in Southern Germany
Understanding decision quality through satisfaction
"PAAMS 2014 International Workshops, Salamanca, Spain, June 4-6, 2014. Proceedings"One of the most important factors to determine the success of an or-ganization is the quality of decisions made. In order to improve the decisions taken and to strengthen the competitiveness of organizations, systems such as Group Decision Support Systems (GDSSs) have been strongly developed and studied in recent decades. The amount of GDSSs incorporating automatic nego-tiation mechanisms, such as argumentation, is increasing nowadays. The evalu-ation of these mechanisms and the understanding of their real benefits for the organizations is still a hard challenge. In this article, we propose a model that allows a GDSS to measure the participant’s satisfaction with the decision, con-sidering aspects such as problem evaluation, personality, emotions and expecta-tions. This model is intended to enable the understanding of the decision’s qual-ity achieved with an argumentation system and to evaluate its capability to po-tentiate the decision’s quality. The proposed model validates all the assump-tions found in the literature regarding the participant’s satisfaction. This work is supported by FEDER Funds through the “Programa Operacional Fac-tores de Competitividade - COMPETE” program and by National Funds through FCT “Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia” under the project: FCOMP-01-0124-FEDER-PEst-OE/EEI/UI0760/2011 and SFRH/BD/89697/2012
Mechanistic origins of variability in phytoplankton dynamics. Part II: analysis of mesocosm blooms under climate change scenarios
Driving factors of phytoplankton spring blooms have been discussed since long, but rarely analyzed quantitatively. Here, we use a mechanistic size-based ecosystem model to reconstruct observations made during the Kiel mesocosm experiments (2005–2006). The model accurately hindcasts highly variable bloom developments including community shifts in cell size. Under low light, phytoplankton dynamics was mostly controlled by selective mesozooplankton grazing. Selective grazing also explains initial dominance of large diatoms under high light conditions. All blooms were mainly terminated by aggregation and sedimentation. Allometries in nutrient uptake capabilities led to a delayed, post-bloom dominance of small species. In general, biomass and trait dynamics revealed many mutual dependencies, while growth factors decoupled from the respective selective forces. A size shift induced by one factor often changed the growth dependency on other factors. Within climate change scenarios, these indirect effects produced large sensitivities of ecosystem fluxes to the size distribution of winter phytoplankton. These sensitivities exceeded those found for changes in vertical mixing, whereas temperature changes only had minimal impacts
Whispering gallery modes in open quantum billiards
The poles of the S-matrix and the wave functions of open 2D quantum billiards
with convex boundary of different shape are calculated by the method of complex
scaling. Two leads are attached to the cavities. The conductance of the
cavities is calculated at energies with one, two and three open channels in
each lead. Bands of overlapping resonance states appear which are localized
along the convex boundary of the cavities and contribute coherently to the
conductance. These bands correspond to the whispering gallery modes appearing
in the classical calculations.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures in jpg and gif forma
