Mortality due to trauma in cats attending veterinary practices in central and south-east England
Objectives: To identify important demographic and spatial factors associated with the risk of trauma and, more specifically, road traffic accidentârelated mortality, relative to other diagnoses in cats.

Complex X-ray Absorption and the Fe Kalpha Profile in NGC 3516
We present data from simultaneous Chandra, XMM-Newton and BeppoSAX
observations of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 3516, taken during 2001 April and Nov.
We have investigated the nature of the very flat observed X-ray spectrum.
Chandra grating data show the presence of X-ray absorption lines, revealing two
distinct components of the absorbing gas, one which is consistent with our
previous model of the UV/X-ray absorber while the other, which is outflowing at
a velocity of ~1100 km/s has a larger column density and is much more highly
ionized. The broad-band spectral characteristics of the X-ray continuum
observed with XMM during 2001 April, reveal the presence of a third layer of
absorption consisting of a very large column (~2.5 x 10E23 cm^-2) of highly
ionized gas with a covering fraction ~50%. This low covering fraction suggests
that the absorber lies within a few lt-days of the X-ray source and/or is
filamentary in structure. Interestingly, these absorbers are not in thermal
equilibrium with one another. The two new components are too highly ionized to
be radiatively accelerated, which we suggest is evidence for a hydromagnetic
origin for the outflow. Applying our model to the Nov dataset, we can account
for the spectral variability primarily by a drop in the ionization states of
the absorbers, as expected by the change in the continuum flux. When this
complex absorption is accounted for we find the underlying continuum to be
typical of Seyfert 1 galaxies. The spectral curvature attributed to the high
column absorber, in turn, reduces estimates of the flux and extent of any broad

Time is not enough : promoting strategic engagement with writing for publication
Research, scholarship and publication are central to the work of higher education. However, even academics with the necessary research and writing skills can struggle to publish as often as they would like. Research suggests that a writing retreat is one solution; there is a process going on there that addresses the problem, but how it does so has not been fully explained. We used a novel approach, containment theory, to explain why the functions of a structured retreat work. We argue that a retreat does more than simply provide time to write; it is a model for academics to meet the demands of research assessment. Finally, we conceptualise this as strategic engagement - a model for producing regular writing for publication while continuing to meet other professional demands
Polar mesoscale cyclones in the northeast Atlantic: Comparing climatologies from ERA-40 and satellite imagery
Polar mesoscale cyclones over the subarctic are thought to be an important component of the coupled atmosphereâocean climate system. However, the relatively small scale of these features presents some concern as to their representation in the meteorological reanalysis datasets that are commonly used to drive ocean models. Here polar mesocyclones are detected in the 40-Year European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) Re-Analysis dataset (ERA-40) in mean sea level pressure and 500-hPa geopotential height, using an automated cyclone detection algorithm. The results are compared to polar mesocyclones detected in satellite imagery over the northeast Atlantic, for the period October 1993âSeptember 1995. Similar trends in monthly cyclone numbers and a similar spatial distribution are found. However, there is a bias in the size of cyclones detected in the reanalysis. Up to 80% of cyclones larger than 500 km are detected in MSL pressure, but this hit rate decreases, approximately linearly, to âŒ40% for 250-km-scale cyclones and to âŒ20% for 100-km-scale cyclones. Consequently a substantial component of the associated airâsea fluxes may be missing from the reanalysis, presenting a serious shortcoming when using such reanalysis data for ocean modeling simulations. Eight maxima in cyclone density are apparent in the mean sea level pressure, clustered around synoptic observing stations in the northeast Atlantic. They are likely spurious, and a result of unidentified shortcomings in the ERA-40 data assimilation procedure
From theory to 'measurement' in complex interventions: methodological lessons from the development of an e-health normalisation instrument
<b>Background</b> Although empirical and theoretical understanding of processes of implementation in health care is advancing, translation of theory into structured measures that capture the complex interplay between interventions, individuals and context remain limited. This paper aimed to (1) describe the process and outcome of a project to develop a theory-based instrument for measuring implementation processes relating to e-health interventions; and (2) identify key issues and methodological challenges for advancing work in this field.<p></p>
<b>Methods</b> A 30-item instrument (Technology Adoption Readiness Scale (TARS)) for measuring normalisation processes in the context of e-health service interventions was developed on the basis on Normalization Process Theory (NPT). NPT focuses on how new practices become routinely embedded within social contexts. The instrument was pre-tested in two health care settings in which e-health (electronic facilitation of healthcare decision-making and practice) was used by health care professionals.<p></p>
<b>Results</b> The developed instrument was pre-tested in two professional samples (N = 46; N = 231). Ratings of items representing normalisation 'processes' were significantly related to staff members' perceptions of whether or not e-health had become 'routine'. Key methodological challenges are discussed in relation to: translating multi-component theoretical constructs into simple questions; developing and choosing appropriate outcome measures; conducting multiple-stakeholder assessments; instrument and question framing; and more general issues for instrument development in practice contexts.<p></p>
<b>Conclusions</b> To develop theory-derived measures of implementation process for progressing research in this field, four key recommendations are made relating to (1) greater attention to underlying theoretical assumptions and extent of translation work required; (2) the need for appropriate but flexible approaches to outcomes measurement; (3) representation of multiple perspectives and collaborative nature of work; and (4) emphasis on generic measurement approaches that can be flexibly tailored to particular contexts of study
Fast and accurate frequency-dependent radiation transport for hydrodynamics simulations in massive star formation
Context: Radiative feedback plays a crucial role in the formation of massive
stars. The implementation of a fast and accurate description of the proceeding
thermodynamics in pre-stellar cores and evolving accretion disks is therefore a
main effort in current hydrodynamics simulations.
Aims: We introduce our newly implemented three-dimensional frequency
dependent radiation transport algorithm for hydrodynamics simulations of
spatial configurations with a dominant central source.
Methods: The module combines the advantage of the speed of an approximate
Flux Limited Diffusion (FLD) solver with the high accuracy of a frequency
dependent first order ray-tracing routine.
Results: We prove the viability of the scheme in a standard radiation
benchmark test compared to a full frequency dependent Monte-Carlo based
radiative transfer code. The setup includes a central star, a circumstellar
flared disk, as well as an envelope. The test is performed for different
optical depths. Considering the frequency dependence of the stellar
irradiation, the temperature distributions can be described precisely in the
optically thin, thick, and irradiated transition regions. Resulting radiative
forces onto dust grains are reproduced with high accuracy. The achievable
parallel speedup of the method imposes no restriction on further radiative
(magneto-) hydrodynamics simulations.
Conclusions: The proposed approximate radiation transport method enables
frequency dependent radiation hydrodynamics studies of the evolution of
pre-stellar cores and circumstellar accretion disks around an evolving massive
star in a highly efficient and accurate manner.Comment: 16 pages, 11 figure
Semapimod Sensitizes Glioblastoma Tumors to Ionizing Radiation by Targeting Microglia
Glioblastoma is the most malignant and lethal form of astrocytoma, with patients having a median survival time of approximately 15 months with current therapeutic modalities. It is therefore important to identify novel therapeutics. There is mounting evidence that microglia (specialized brain-resident macrophages) play a significant role in the development and progression of glioblastoma tumors. In this paper we show that microglia, in addition to stimulating glioblastoma cell invasion, also promote glioblastoma cell proliferation and resistance to ionizing radiation in vitro. We found that semapimod, a drug that selectively interferes with the function of macrophages and microglia, potently inhibits microglia-stimulated GL261 invasion, without affecting serum-stimulated glioblastoma cell invasion. Semapimod also inhibits microglia-stimulated resistance of glioblastoma cells to radiation, but has no significant effect on microglia-stimulated glioblastoma cell proliferation. We also found that intracranially administered semapimod strongly increases the survival of GL261 tumor-bearing animals in combination with radiation, but has no significant benefit in the absence of radiation. In conclusion, our observations indicate that semapimod sensitizes glioblastoma tumors to ionizing radiation by targeting microglia and/or infiltrating macrophages
A high velocity ionised outflow and XUV photosphere in the narrow emission line quasar PG1211+143
We report on the analysis of a ~60 ksec XMM observation of the bright, narrow
emission line quasar PG 1211+143. Absorption lines are seen in both EPIC and
RGS spectra corresponding to H- and He-like ions of Fe, S, Mg, Ne, O, N and C.
The observed line energies indicate an ionised outflow velocity of ~24000 km
s^-1. The highest energy lines require a column density of N_H ~ 5 x 10^23
cm^-2, at an ionisation parameter of log(xi) ~ 3.4. If the origin of this high
velocity outflow lies in matter being driven from the inner disc, then the flow
is likely to be optically thick within a radius ~130 Schwarzschild radii,
providing a natural explanation for the Big Blue Bump (and strong soft X-ray)
