Self-Selection and Internal Migration in the United States

    Get PDF
Within the conceptual framework of the Roy model, this paper provides an empirical analysis of internal migration flows using data from the National Longitudinal Surveys of Youth. The theoretical approach highlights regional differences in the returns to skills: regions that pay higher returns to skills attract more skilled workers than regions that pay lower returns. Our empirical results suggest that interstate differences in the returns to skills are a major determinant of both the size and skill composition of internal migration flows. Persons whose skills are most mismatched with the reward structure offered by their current state of residence are the persons most likely to leave that state. and these persons tend to relocate in states which offer higher rewards for their particular skills.

The Radio Jet Associated with the Multiple V380 Ori System

The giant Herbig-Haro object 222 extends over \sim6' in the plane of the sky, with a bow shock morphology. The identification of its exciting source has remained uncertain over the years. A non-thermal radio source located at the core of the shock structure was proposed to be the exciting source. However, Very Large Array studies showed that the radio source has a clear morphology of radio galaxy and a lack of flux variations or proper motions, favoring an extragalactic origin. Recently, an optical-IR study proposed that this giant HH object is driven by the multiple stellar system V380 Ori, located about 23' to the SE of HH 222. The exciting sources of HH systems are usually detected as weak free-free emitters at centimeter wavelengths. Here we report the detection of an elongated radio source associated with the Herbig Be star or with its close infrared companion in the multiple V380 Ori system. This radio source has the characteristics of a thermal radio jet and is aligned with the direction of the giant outflow defined by HH~222 and its suggested counterpart to the SE, HH~1041. We propose that this radio jet traces the origin of the large scale HH outflow. Assuming that the jet arises from the Herbig Be star, the radio luminosity is a few times smaller than the value expected from the radio-bolometric correlation for radio jets, confirming that this is a more evolved object than those used to establish the correlation.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figure

    Get PDF

The Non-thermal Radio Jet Toward the NGC 2264 Star Formation Region

We report sensitive VLA 3.6 cm radio observations toward the head of the Cone nebula in NGC 2264, made in 2006. The purpose of these observations was to study a non-thermal radio jet recently discovered, that appears to emanate from the head of the Cone nebula. The jet is highly polarized, with well-defined knots, and one-sided. The comparison of our images with 1995 archive data indicates no evidence of proper motions nor polarization changes. We find reliable flux density variations in only one knot, which we tentatively identify as the core of a quasar or radio galaxy. An extragalactic location seems to be the best explanation for this jet.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figure

This article exposes some reflections from auto-anthropology combining biography, research and social and historical context of the indignado movement. It is about some debates that occur within the movement when people are positioned from their diverse political identities (ethno-national, gender, sexual option and ideologies) and the tensions that exist in the struggle for common interests. These tensions lead us to raise the question on how the critics of the indignado movement are more focused on capitalism and lack of opportunities for more radical critical debate on Western civilization.

This article discusses advances in the anthropology of women in Chiapas and Central America, an area in which the pioneers in this field helped to denounce androcentrism, elucidated gender relations, and chose the subordination of women as an anthropological research problem. Their actions increasingly helped shape a feminist gender perspective within the discipline. This article registers, documents, and analyzes the life and work of women and feminists who have made scientific-social contributions with respect to cultural diversity, social spaces and inequality, covering the “golden age” (1940-1964) up to the second decade of the 20th century, focusing on the contributions of June Nash and Mercedes Olivera Bustamante, two anthropologists whose work has been key to the discipline in this region.

Hispanic Immigration to the United States

    Get PDF
This chapter presents some of the exceptional characteristics of recent Hispanic immigration to the United States. In 2005, there were nearly 40 million Hispanic immigrants and descendants of Hispanic immigrants living in the U.S. The assimilation experience of this large cultural group does not seem to be following the path past immigrants to the U.S. followed. Most third generation Hispanics in the U.S. still find themselves with income and education levels below the U.S. averages. Most forecasts predict that about 60 million Hispanics and Hispanic-Americans will be living in the U.S. by 2030

Multi-systemic heart, kidney, and liver disease induced by gadolinium-based contrast treatment

Introduction: Gadolinium-based contrast agents have revolutionized clinical imaging. Conversely, there is growing concern of the overall safety of these agents. Once administered there is long-term retention of gadolinium in tissues. The long-term biologic impact of gadolinium retention is if monumental concern to patients and drug-regulating administrations. Methods: Our research team was the first to establish a rodent model of iatrogenic systemic fibrosis using chimeric mice. Wild-type C57/BL6 mice were randomized by sex and weight into contrast treatment (2.5 mmol/kg intraperitoneally, 20 doses over 4 weeks) or untreated groups. Ultrasound (Vevo 3100, FujiFilm VisualSonics) was performed several days-post final contrast treatment. Animals were perfused with formalin. Fixed tissues were prepared for magnetic resonance imaging (Bruker, 7.0T 40 cm bore MR scanner) or analyzed histologically and with electron microscopy (Hitachi HT7700, AMT 16-megapixel digital camera). Samples for the latter were further examined using scanning/transmission electron microscopy equipped with energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (Jeol 2010F FASTEM with Oxford Analytical EDS). Results: Gadolinium-based contrast agents induced intracellular nanostructure formation in the kidney along with acute tubular and mitochondrial damage. Elemental analysis of these nanostructures by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy revealed that these electron-dense structures were rich in gadolinium. Furthermore, exposure to gadolinium induced liver steatosis. Treatment groups paradoxically demonstrated increases in several functional cardiac parameters, particularly cardiac outputs. MRI analysis further illustrates gadolinium retention in the renal cortex of treatment groups. Conclusions: Exposure to gadolinium-based contrast agents leads to gadolinium retention in the form of electron-dense nanostructures. Gadolinium-based contrast agent treatment induces multi-systemic heart, kidney and liver disease
