    The influence of triplet states in organic photovoltaics

    Triplet formation is generally regarded as an energy loss process in organic photovoltaics. Understanding charge photogeneration and triplet formation mechanisms in non-fullerene acceptor blends is essential for deepening understanding of photophysics in these important organic photovoltaic materials. In this talk, the methods of creating triplet states in organic photovoltaic materials and blends are covered. I also discuss if the appearance of these triplets states are either a hindrance or a help with actual experimental examples. We infer extending triplet lifetimes by new triplet formation mechanisms, checking their differences if they were created either on ultrafast or microsecond timescales, and quantifying their populations.Universidad de MĂĄlaga.     Quantifying triplet formation in conjugated polymer/non-fullerene acceptor blends

    Triplet formation is generally regarded as an energy loss process in organic photovoltaics. Understanding charge photogeneration and triplet formation mechanisms in non-fullerene acceptor blends is essential for deepening understanding of photophysics in these important organic photovoltaic materials. Here, we present a comprehensive spectroscopy and morphology study on non-fullerene acceptors ITIC, ITIC-Th, ITIC-2F and Y6, both pristine and blended with reference polymer PffBT4T-C9C13. Atomic force microscopy and grazing-incidence X-ray diffraction provided information regarding the morphology of the films while spectroelectrochemistry combined with microsecond transient absorption spectroscopy allowed triplets and charge carriers to be investigated in detail. Crucially, we used triplet sensitisation to determine molar extinction coefficients of the non-fullerene acceptor triplets (2.7–6.5 × 104 L mol−1 cm−1), allowing triplet populations to be quantified in the blends. Intriguingly, no consistent trends were found in the photophysics of the studied blend systems, with each presenting its own unique mechanism. PffBT4T-C9C13:Y6 showed no triplet formation, only charge carriers that decayed rapidly in a relatively crystalline environment, consistent with the observed highly segregated morphology. In contrast, all blends in the ITIC series produced evidence of considerable triplet formation in addition to charge carriers. PffBT4T-C9C13:ITIC-Th blend produced acceptor triplets irrespective of excitation wavelength, and these were formed via intersystem crossing and/or energy transfer. Conversely, both ITIC and ITIC-2F blends displayed triplet formation via non-geminate recombination of charge carriers, with both NFA and polymer triplets observed. However, PffBT4T-C9C13:ITIC-2F produced a substantially higher charge carrier population than the ITIC blend. Because its triplet formation mechanism relies on the presence of charge carriers, PffBT4T-C9C13:ITIC-2F, with the highest charge carrier population, also had the highest triplet population. These results exemplify the prevalence of triplet states across a range of NFA blend systems, despite the varying formation mechanisms. Furthermore, they showcase that triplet populations can reach very high levels, particularly in cases of concomitantly high charge populations. Since high charge carrier densities correlate with large short circuit currents, this has significant ramifications for organic photovoltaic performance

    “Type” as central to perceptions of breed differences in behavior of domestic dog

    A survey was designed to explore the effect of type classification on perception and expectation of a dog’s behavior. The survey focused on two forms of presentation: the effect of visual image versus breed name in the identification of a breed as a dangerous dog type, and the effect of breed group classification on expectation of a dog’s level of aggressiveness. The findings have serious implications for Staffordshire Bull Terriers. Respondents were over 5 times more likely to misascribe by image alone the Staffordshire Bull Terrier as a dangerous breed as defined under the United Kingdom’s Dangerous Dogs Act 1991. Furthermore, the classification of Terrier attracted high scores in relation to type-specific aggressiveness. These findings highlight the need for more research on personal perception of supposedly dangerous dog breeds to better understand and explain this phenomenon, leading to better protection of the public and better welfare outcomes for dogs

    BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Colorectal cancer (CRC) arises via multiple genetic changes. Mutation of the tumour suppressor gene APC, a key regulator of Wnt signalling, is recognised as a frequent early driving mutation in CRC. We have previously shown that conditional loss of Apc within the murine small intestine (Apcfloxmice) results in acute Wnt signalling activation, altered crypt-villus architecture and many hallmarks of neoplasia. Our transctipomic profiling (Affymetrix Microarrays) and proteomic profiling (iTRAQ-QSTAR) of Apc-deficient intestine inferred the involvement of High Mobility Group Box 1 (Hmgb1) in CRC pathogenesis. Here we assess the contribution of HMGB1 to the crypt progenitor phenotype seen following Apc loss. RESULTS: Elevated HMGB1 was confirmed in intestinal epithelia and serum following conditional loss of Apc. Treatment of Apcflox mice with anti-HMGB1 neutralising antibody significantly reduced many of the crypt progenitor phenotypes associated with Apc loss; proliferation and apoptosis levels were reduced, cell differentiation was restored and the expansion of stem cell marker expression was eradicated. METHODS: Hmgb1 levels in intestinal epithelia and serum in Apcflox and ApcMin mice were assessed using qRT-PCR, Western blot and ELISA assays. The functional importance of elevated extracellular Hmgb1 was assessed using an anti-HMGB1 neutralising antibody in Apcflox mice. CONCLUSIONS: HMGB1 is expressed and secreted from intestinal epithelial cells in response to Wnt signalling activation. This secreted HMGB1 is required to maintain nearly all aspects of the crypt progenitor phenotype observed following Apc loss and add to the body of accumulating evidence indicating that targeting HMGB1 may be a viable novel therapeutic approach

    Gut microbiomes and reproductive isolation in Drosophila

    Experimental studies of the evolution of reproductive isolation (RI) in real time are a powerful way in which to reveal fundamental, early processes that initiate divergence. In a classic speciation experiment, populations of Drosophila pseudoobscura were subjected to divergent dietary selection and evolved significant positive assortative mating by diet. More recently, a direct role for the gut microbiome in determining this type of RI in Drosophila melanogaster has been proposed. Manipulation of the diet, and hence the gut microbiome, was reported to result in immediate assortative mating by diet, which could be eliminated by reducing gut microbes using antibiotics and recreated by adding back Lactobacillus plantarum. We suggest that the evolutionary significance of this result is unclear. For example, in D. melanogaster, the microbiome is reported as flexible and largely environmentally determined. Therefore, microbiome-mediated RI would be transient and would break down under dietary variation. In the absence of evolutionary coassociation or recurrent exposure between host and microbiome, there are no advantages for the gut bacteria or host in effecting RI. To explore these puzzling effects and their mechanisms further, we repeated the tests for RI associated with diet-specific gut microbiomes in D. melanogaster. Despite observing replicable differences in the gut microbiomes of flies maintained on different diets, we found no evidence for diet-associated RI, for any role of gut bacteria, or for L. plantarum specifically. The results suggest that there is no general role for gut bacteria in driving the evolution of RI in this species and resolve an evolutionary riddle

    Predicting university performance in psychology: the role of previous performance and discipline-specific knowledge

    Recent initiatives to enhance retention and widen participation ensure it is crucial to understand the factors that predict students' performance during their undergraduate degree. The present research used Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to test three separate models that examined the extent to which British Psychology students' A-level entry qualifications predicted: (1) their performance in years 1-3 of their Psychology degree, and (2) their overall degree performance. Students' overall A-level entry qualifications positively predicted performance during their first year and overall degree performance, but negatively predicted their performance during their third year. Additionally, and more specifically, students' A-level entry qualifications in Psychology positively predicted performance in the first year only. Such findings have implications for admissions tutors, as well as for students who have not studied Psychology before but who are considering applying to do so at university

    Enhancement of dye regeneration kinetics in dichromophoric porphyrin-carbazole triphenylamine dyes influenced by more exposed radical cation orbitals

    Reduction kinetics of oxidized dyes absorbed on semiconductor surfaces and immersed in redox active electrolytes has been mainly modeled based on the free energy difference between the oxidation potential of the dye and the redox potential of the electrolyte. Only a few mechanisms have been demonstrated to enhance the kinetics by other means. In this work, the rate constant of the reduction of oxidized porphyrin dye is enhanced by attaching non-conjugated carbazole triphenylamine moiety using iodine/triiodide and tris(2,2′-bispyridinium)cobalt II/III electrolytes. These results are obtained using transient absorption spectroscopy by selectively probing the regeneration kinetics at the porphyrin radical cation and the carbazole triphenylamine radical cation absorption wavelengths. The enhancement in the reduction kinetics is not attributed to changes in the driving force, but to the more exposed dye cation radical orbitals of the dichromophoric dye. The results are important for the development of high efficiency photo-electrochemical devices with minimalized energy loss at electron transfer interfaces
