Effect of Temperature on Galvanic Corrosion of Non-Welded/Welded AISI 316L Stainless Steel in H3PO4

[EN] Galvanic corrosion of non-welded/welded AISI 316L SS at different temperatures (25 degrees C to 60 degrees C) at a Reynolds number of 1456 in phosphoric acid has been studied using polarization curves (by the mixed potential theory) and zero resistance ammeter (ZRA) measurements. Imposed potential measurements provide more active predicted coupled potentials and higher Galvanic current densities than those obtained using ZRA measurements. Polarization curves show that the anode of the pair is the non-welded AISI 316L. Galvanic current density values obtained from polarization curves increase with temperature. ZRA tests present the highest i(G) values at 60 degrees C; however, the values are very close to zero for all the temperatures studied. This is in agreement with the low value of the compatibility limit and of the parameter which evaluate the Galvanic phenomenon importance. Both techniques present the most positive potentials at the highest temperature. The authors would like to express their gratitude to the Spanish MAEC (PCI Mediterráneo C/018046/08).Sánchez Tovar, R.; Montañés, M.; Garcia-Anton, J.; Guenbour, A. We study the relative performance of two different MM5-PBL parameterizations (Blackadar and MRF) simulating hourly values of solar irradiance and temperature in the south-eastern part of the Iberian Peninsula. The evaluation was carried out throughout the different seasons of the year 2005 and for three different sky conditions: clear-sky, broken-clouds and overcast conditions. Two integrations, one per PBL parameterization, were carried out for every sky condition and season of the year and results were compared with observational data. Overall, the MM5 model, both using the Blackadar or MRF PBL parameterization, revealed to be a valid tool to estimate hourly values of solar radiation and temperature over the study area. The influence of the PBL parameterization on the model estimates was found to be more important for the solar radiation than for the temperature and highly dependent on the season and sky conditions. Particularly, a detailed analysis revealed that, during broken-clouds conditions, the ability of the model to reproduce hourly changes in the solar radiation strongly depends upon the selected PBL parameterization. Additionally, it was found that solar radiation RMSE values are about one order of magnitude higher during broken-clouds and overcast conditions compared to clear-sky conditions. For the temperature, the two PBL parameterizations provide very similar estimates. Only under overcast conditions and during the autumn, the MRF provides significantly better estimates

Krill as a central node for iron cycling in the Southern Ocean

In order to establish the potential role of Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) in the recycling of bioactive elements, we have quantified the release of iron, phosphate, and ammonia by these organisms along the Antarctic Peninsula sector of the Southern Ocean. The experimental results suggested that the presence of krill has a significant impact on ambient iron concentrations, as large amounts of this trace element were released by the krill (22-689 nmol Fe g Dry Weight-1 h-1, equivalent to 0.2 to 4.3 nmol Fe L-1 d-1). Half of this iron release occurred within the first hour of the experiment, and differences in iron and phosphate release rates (3.1 to 14.0 μmol PO4 3- g DW-1 h-1) seemed to reflect differences in food availability. These results identify krill as a major node in iron cycling in the Southern Ocean, potentially influencing iron residence time in the upper water column of this region. Monitoring for assessment of natural disasters, such as volcanic eruptions, presents a methodological challenge for the scientific community. Here, we present Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) as a feasible, precise, rapid and safe tool for real time monitoring of the impacts of a volcanic event during the Cumbre Vieja eruption on La Palma Island, Spain (2021). UAV surveys with optical RGB (Red-Green-Blue), thermal and multispectral sensors, and a water sampling device, were carried out in different areas affected by the lava flow, including the upper volcanic edifice and the lava delta formed on the coastal fringe of the island. Our results have provided useful information for the monitoring of the advance of the lava flow and its environmental consequences during the volcanic emergency. Our data shows how La Palma island's growth, with the formation of a new lava delta of 28 ha and a total volume of lava injected into the sea of 5,138,852 m3. Moreover, our Digital Elevation Model (DEM) simulated, with a 70 % accuracy, the probabilistic simulation of the possible path followed by the lava flow in the vicinity of the fissure from which the magma emanates. In addition, significant changes of seawater physical-chemical parameters were registered in coastal surface waters by the in situ seawater samples collected with the automatic water sampling device of our UAV. The first meters of the water column, due to the instant evaporation of the seawater in contact with the hot lava, produce an increase of temperature and salinity of up to 4–5 °C and up to 5 units, respectively.En prensa3,25

Synergistic effect between hydrodynamic conditions during Ti anodization and acidic treatment on the photoelectric properties of TiO2 nanotubes

In the present work, the combined influence of controlled hydrodynamic conditions during Ti anodization and the acidic treatment with HClO4 on the photoelectric properties of mixed anatase/rutile TiO2 nanotubes has been studied. Anodized samples were analyzed by means of Field Emission Scanning Electronic Microscopy (FE-SEM), Confocal Raman Microscopy, electrochemical measurements (electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and Mott-Schottky analysis) and photoelectrochemical measurements. It has been observed that the use of hydrodynamic conditions increases the surface area of nanotubes, while acidic treatment enhances their conductivity. Besides, there is a clear synergistic effect between the hydrodynamic conditions and the acidic treatment, which results in higher photocurrent densities for the treated nanotubes formed under hydrodynamic conditions.Authors would like to express their gratitude for the financial support to the Ministerio of Economia y Competitividad (Project CTQ2013-42494-R).Sánchez Tovar, R.; Fernández Domene, RM.; Martinez Sanchez, A.; Blasco Tamarit, ME.; García-Antón, J. Improvement of the electrochemical behaviour of Zn-electroplated steel using regenerated Cr(III) passivation baths

    Get PDF
Conversion coatings based on trivalent chromium are more sensitive to the presence of zinc and iron impurities than the chromate formulations. This fact contributes to a decrease in the quality of passivation and to the generation of a significant amount of hazardous liquid waste. Recently, a new eco-innovative process based on Emulsion Pertraction Technology (EPT) is being implemented at industrial scale for selectively removing Zn and Fe from spent passivation baths in order to enhance the lifetime of the Cr (III) baths. In this study, the effect of Zn and Fe removal on the electrochemical behaviour of Zn-electroplated steel samples was evaluated by means of polarisation curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements at open circuit potential conditions in 3.5 g/L NaCl solutions. The main objective was to assess the benefits brought by EPT using electrochemical methods. Cr (III) passivation baths regenerated using the EPT process have been compared to the bath used in a local industry as well as to fresh and spent baths. According to the results, the samples passivated in the EPT regenerated bath showed a significant improvement in their electrochemical behaviour compared to the samples passivated in the spent baths. This study concluded the suitability of EPT for regenerating Cr (III) passivation baths

Charge disproportionation in YNiO3_{3} : ESR and susceptibility study

We present a study of the magnetic properties of YNiO3_{3} in the paramagnetic range, above and below the metal-insulator (MI) transition. The dc susceptibility, χdc\chi_{dc} (measured up to 1000 K) is a decreasing function of T for T>T >150 K (the N\'{e}el temperature) and we observe two different Curie-Weiss regimes corresponding to the metallic and insulator phases. In the metallic phase, this behaviour seems to be associated with the small ionic radius of Y% 3+^{3+}. The value of the Curie constant for T<< TMI_{MI} allows us to discard the possibility of Ni3+^{3+} localization. An electron spin resonance (ESR) spectrum is visible in the insulator phase and only a fraction of the Ni ions contributes to this resonance. We explain the ESR and χdc\chi _{dc} behaviour for T << TMI_{MI} in terms of charge disproportionation of the type 2Ni% ^{3+}\to Ni2+^{2+}+Ni4+,^{4+}, that is compatible with the previously observed structural transition across TMI_{MI}.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Phys.
