    Identification of sixteen grapevine rootstocks by RFLP and RFLP analysis of nuclear DNA extracted from the wood

    Sixteen rootstocks of the Vitis genus have been identified by the RFLP analysis methodology with the restriction enzyme HinfI. Uniques or moderately repeated DNA sequences of the nuclear genome of the Chardonnay V. vinifera variety were used as probes. RFLP analysis of 5 clones of SO 4 (V. berlandieri x V. riparia) and of 3 clones of 41 B Mgt (V. berlandieri x V. vinifera) with 4 probes and HinfI did not lead to any polymorphism. This is not surprising because of the vegetative origin of the clones. A simple method of nuclear DNA extraction of wood is described for the grapevine. We propose now the RFLP analysis methodology to complement or to replace in certain cases the ampelographical methods of identification of the rootstocks. L'analyse RFLP de cinq clones de SO 4 (V. berlandieri x V. riparia) et de trois clones de 41 B Mgt (V. berlandieri x V. vinifera) avec quatre sondes RFLP et l'enzyme HinfI n'a pas permis de différencier les clones d'un même hybride, dont les genomes sont extrêmement proches puisqu'ils sont obtenus de façon végétative. Nous présentons aussi une méthode simple d'extraction d'ADN nucléaire à partir du bois de vigne. Les analyses RFLP de cet ADN ont donné des résultats identiques à ceux obtenus avec l'ADN des feuilles. Nous sommes maintenant en mesure de proposer que la méthodologie d'analyse RFLP complète ou remplace dans certains cas les méthodes ampélographiques d'identification des portegreffes du genre Vitis. L'élargissement de cette application est envisagé pour les varietes de Vitis vinifera

    Atomic and Electronic Structure of a Rashba pp-nn Junction at the BiTeI Surface

    The non-centrosymmetric semiconductor BiTeI exhibits two distinct surface terminations that support spin-split Rashba surface states. Their ambipolarity can be exploited for creating spin-polarized pp-nn junctions at the boundaries between domains with different surface terminations. We use scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS) to locate such junctions and investigate their atomic and electronic properties. The Te- and I-terminated surfaces are identified owing to their distinct chemical reactivity, and an apparent height mismatch of electronic origin. The Rashba surface states are revealed in the STS spectra by the onset of a van Hove singularity at the band edge. Eventually, an electronic depletion is found on interfacial Te atoms, consistent with the formation of a space charge area in typical pp-nn junctions.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    AbstractWe report the case of a 37-year-old patient presenting with knee pain and recurrent effusion without instability due to an intra-articular hemangioma in the posterior compartment of the knee. MRI showed features suggesting a diagnosis of hemangioma. Arthroscopic excision of the tumor was performed and the diagnosis was confirmed histologically. There was no recurrence after 5 years of follow-up

    Acetabular fracture: Long-term follow-up and factors associated with secondary implantation of total hip arthroplasty

    SummaryHypothesisThe present study sought to determine long-term outcome in acetabular fracture and the factors associated with secondary implantation of a total hip arthroplasty and/or with poor functional results.Material and methodsSeventy-two patients admitted between 2000 and 2005 were followed up for a maximum 11years (mean, 6.8years): 16 females, 56 males; mean age at injury, 41.6years (median, 40years). There were 45 simple acetabular fractures, 27 complex fractures and 27 dislocations. Late complications were: osteoarthritis (n=29), osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH: n=8) and heterotopic ossification (n=2).Results and discussionTwenty-five total hip arthroplasties (THA) were performed, with a mean time to surgery of 3.7years. Associated factors for THA were: VAS (P<0.0001), PMA (P<0.0001), osteoarthritis (P<0.0001), ONFH (P<0.0002), initial dislocation (P=0.0002), no functional treatment (P=0.0014), surgical treatment (P=0.0065), initial traction (P=0.0068), anterior and posterior congruency defect (P=0.0072 and P<0.0001), and initial intra-articular foreign body (P=0.045). Factors associated with poor or bad functional results were the same, plus: etiology (P=0.0021), BMI (P=0.03) and posterior wall fracture (P=0.0325).Level of evidence4; retrospective study

    Estimation of Fiber Orientations Using Neighborhood Information

    Data from diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI) can be used to reconstruct fiber tracts, for example, in muscle and white matter. Estimation of fiber orientations (FOs) is a crucial step in the reconstruction process and these estimates can be corrupted by noise. In this paper, a new method called Fiber Orientation Reconstruction using Neighborhood Information (FORNI) is described and shown to reduce the effects of noise and improve FO estimation performance by incorporating spatial consistency. FORNI uses a fixed tensor basis to model the diffusion weighted signals, which has the advantage of providing an explicit relationship between the basis vectors and the FOs. FO spatial coherence is encouraged using weighted l1-norm regularization terms, which contain the interaction of directional information between neighbor voxels. Data fidelity is encouraged using a squared error between the observed and reconstructed diffusion weighted signals. After appropriate weighting of these competing objectives, the resulting objective function is minimized using a block coordinate descent algorithm, and a straightforward parallelization strategy is used to speed up processing. Experiments were performed on a digital crossing phantom, ex vivo tongue dMRI data, and in vivo brain dMRI data for both qualitative and quantitative evaluation.     Giant alkali-metal-induced lattice relaxation as the driving force of the insulating phase of alkali-metal/Si(111):B

    Ab initio density-functional theory calculations, photoemission spectroscopy (PES), scanning tunneling microscopy, and spectroscopy (STM, STS) have been used to solve the 2√3 x 2√3R30 surface reconstruction observed previously by LEED on 0.5 ML K/Si:B. A large K-induced vertical lattice relaxation occurring only for 3/4 of Si adatoms is shown to quantitatively explain both the chemical shift of 1.14 eV and the ratio 1/3 measured on the two distinct B 1s core levels. A gap is observed between valence and conduction surface bands by ARPES and STS which is shown to have mainly a Si-B character. Finally, the calculated STM images agree with our experimental results.     Intercomparison of stratospheric gravity wave observations with AIRS and IASI

    Gravity waves are an important driver for the atmospheric circulation and have substantial impact on weather and climate. Satellite instruments offer excellent opportunities to study gravity waves on a global scale. This study focuses on observations from the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) onboard the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Aqua satellite and the Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI) onboard the European MetOp satellites. The main aim of this study is an intercomparison of stratospheric gravity wave observations of both instruments. In particular, we analyzed AIRS and IASI 4.3 μm brightness temperature measurements, which directly relate to stratospheric temperature. Three case studies showed that AIRS and IASI provide a clear and consistent picture of the temporal development of individual gravity wave events. Statistical comparisons based on a five-year period of measurements (2008-2012) showed similar spatial and temporal patterns of gravity wave activity. However, the statistical comparisons also revealed systematic differences of variances between AIRS and IASI (about 45%) that we attribute to the different spatial measurement characteristics of both instruments. We also found differences between day- and nighttime data (about 30%) that are partly due to the local time variations of the gravity wave sources. While AIRS has been used successfully in many previous gravity wave studies, IASI data are applied here for the first time for that purpose. Our study shows that gravity wave observations from different hyperspectral infrared sounders such as AIRS and IASI can be directly related to each other, if instrument-specific characteristics such as different noise levels and spatial resolution and sampling are carefully considered. The ability to combine observations from different satellites provides an opportunity to create a long-term record, which is an exciting prospect for future climatological studies of stratospheric gravity wave activity

    The site occupied by this residential group has an area of 35 hectares, and its main axis runs East-West. The view of the city of Nancy is to the South-Southeast. This article describes blocks A and B. Block A is 400 m long, 43 m high, has 15 storeys and 920 dwellings. Block B is 300 m long, 50 m high, has 17 storeys and 800 dwellings. The ground floor has entrances to the lifts, room for storing perambulators, motorbikes, and other available space. Each apartment of the first floor has either 4 or 5 rooms, and apartments on all higher floors have either 3 or 4 rooms. A feature of the construction is that the foundations have been made in the traditional manner, but the structure and enclosing walls have been carried out using a special type of heavy prefabrication technique. In addition to the blocks of flats, the amenities of the residential project have also been completed. Two commercial centres, a cinema, a cultural centre, three schools, a church, a sports ground, garages, and parking sites are already available. In the near future apartment towers will be built, in the shape of a three armed star. These will accommodate 786 further dwellings.El terreno sobre el que se ha construido este núcleo residencial ocupa una extensión de 35 Ha, goza de orieníación axil este-oeste, y sus vistas sobre la ciudad de Nancy se desarrollan en sentido sur-sureste.     Shielding efficiency and E(J) characteristics measured on large melt cast Bi-2212 hollow cylinders in axial magnetic fields

    We show that tubes of melt cast Bi-2212 used as current leads for LTS magnets can also act as efficient magnetic shields. The magnetic screening properties under an axial DC magnetic field are characterized at several temperatures below the liquid nitrogen temperature (77 K). Two main shielding properties are studied and compared with those of Bi-2223, a material that has been considered in the past for bulk magnetic shields. The first property is related to the maximum magnetic flux density that can be screened, Blim; it is defined as the applied magnetic flux density below which the field attenuation measured at the centre of the shield exceeds 1000. For a cylinder of Bi-2212 with a wall thickness of 5 mm and a large ratio of length over radius, Blim is evaluated to 1 T at T = 10 K. This value largely exceeds the Blim value measured at the same temperature on similar tubes of Bi-2223. The second shielding property that is characterized is the dependence of Blim with respect to variations of the sweep rate of the applied field, dBapp/dt. This dependence is interpreted in terms of the power law E = Ec(J/Jc)^n and allows us to determine the exponent n of this E(J) characteristics for Bi-2212. The characterization of the magnetic field relaxation involves very small values of the electric field. This gives us the opportunity to experimentally determine the E(J) law in an unexplored region of small electric fields. Combining these results with transport and AC shielding measurements, we construct a piecewise E(J) law that spans over 8 orders of magnitude of the electric field.Comment: 16 pages, 7 figure
