We will attempt to show that, in certain types of writing, what is given to the reader is not simply mere signs but “ perceptual judgements ” on reality, a preconscious vision which releases the musement of the readers and aims at modifying their habits of reading to such an extent that they eventually question their perception of the world and their place in it. While the emphasis is placed on the firstness of expression, more significantly, the text leads the reader to forget the fact that all speech representation pertains to the universe of thirdness, i.e. of conventional laws understood as a communicative mode of representation. Illustrations will be taken from Dos Passos’s trilogy (The 42nd Parallel et The Big Money)
usuario. The fusion between Virtual Reality and robotics brings a world of infinite
possibilities.
Both technologies are under continuous development. In fact, Virtual Reality has
regained popularity very recently even though it was born during the nineteen sixties.
In recent years we have witnessed how Virtual Reality finds a spot amongst our
most used technologies. The most widespread commercial use comes from home
entertainment, games concretely. Nevertheless it can be applied to many other different
fields, like health, in which outstanding results are being obtained (in surgery,
rehabilitation, etc).
This project attempts to explore the use of Virtual Reality and robotics as a tool
focused on individuals who are disadvantaged with reduced mobility, to help them
be more independent and bringing them the possibility of virtual immersion and
transportation in real environments.
To achieve this goal a system composed of a robot and the Oculus Rift glasses (Virtual
Reality) has been built. The robot is controlled by the Oculus Rift glasses. A user wearing
them will be able to control the robot’s movements (transportation and exploration) with
head movements. The user will see in real time through the glasses what the robot is
seeing, making the robot an extension to the user’s vision.
Once the robot was completely built and the software fully implemented, different
usability tests were performed with several users. Based on these usability tests the way
to send commands was redesigned and the related parameters were adjusted.
Those first results led to the idea of a new control interface which, after implemented,
resulted in better usability. It is clear how during the first attempts at controlling the robot
the users were struggling to control the robots movements with precision, as they were
not used to controlling movement just with their head’s position. After this round of trials
the robot’s speed was adjusted to make it slightly slower.
Once all changes were done, the final tests were performed with new test users. These
results were very positive as users would quickly get accustomed to the robots sensitivity
and movements after a few minutes, enabling them to reach the proposed targets much
easier.
Even though the project is focused on people suffering from motor disabilities, it hasn’t
III
been able to test it with anyone with that condition. That’s why it is important to have
speed, range of movement, sensitivity, etc... as adjustable parameters in the system. This
way when, during future work, it is tested with the users this project is targeted for it will
be easy to calibrate and customize for that case’s needs.
Despite the positive reviews, it is not recommended to spend a lot of time using the
system without taking the glasses off, specially if the user is not accustomed to them. In
some cases it may cause dizziness and it has been questioned whether Virtual Reality
Glasses may be damaging the users’ retinas [1].
This project’s final result is a movil device that the user can control just by using
their heads and which enables them to see the device’s environment through Ouclus
Rift. By using Oculus Rift we keep the possibility of seeing, not only the environment
inside which the robot is moving, but a virtual environment created by the user himself.
These questions have been left as study material for future work

DISTRIBUCIĂ“N ESPACIAL DE DOS METACERCARIAS DE DIGENEOS EN BRANQUIAS DEL PEJERREY ODONTHESTES ARGENTINENSIS (ATHERINIFORMES) DEL RIO DE LA PLATA (URUGUAY)
El pejerrey (Odonthestes argentinensis Valenciennes, 1835) es un importante recurso acuático en las costas del RĂo de la Plata. Este pez actĂşa como huesped intermediario de varios parásitos incluyendo metacercárias de trematodes. En las branquias de estos peces colectados en la costa uruguaya del Rio de la Plata encontramos metacercárias de Ascocotyle sp. Looss, 1899 (Heterophiydae) y Stephanoprora uruguayensis Holcman-Spector & OlagĂĽe, 1989 (Echinostomatidae). El objeto de este trabajo fue determinar la prevalencia e intensidad media de infestaciĂłn, asĂ como describir la distribuciĂłn especial de estas metacercarias en las branquias. Se examinaron 279 peces. La prevalencia e intensidad media de la parasitosis fue de 34,05 % y 11,38 para Ascocotyle sp. y de 53,04% y 26,38 para S. uruguayensis. Observamos una distribuciĂłn desigual de las metacercarias entre los arcos branquiales internos y externos. Mientras que S. uruguayensis se distribuye principalmente en los arcos branquiales 1 y 2; Ascocotyle sp. es más abundante en los arcos branquiales 3 y 4. Además las metacercárias de S. uruguayensis se encontraron principalmente en la regiĂłn proximal del filamento branquial (KS = 4.80;
Hemi-Castaing ligamentoplasty for the treatment of chronic lateral ankle instability: a retrospective assessment of outcome
Purpose: In the treatment of chronic ankle instability, most non-anatomical reconstructions use the peroneus brevis tendon. This, however, sacrifices the natural ankle stabilising properties of the peroneus brevis muscle. The aim of this study was to evaluate the functional outcome of patients treated with a hemi-Castaing procedure, which uses only half the peroneus brevis tendon. Methods: We performed a retrospective cohort study of patients who underwent hemi-Castaing ligamentoplasty for chronic lateral ankle instability between 1993 and 2010, with a minimum of one year follow-up. Patients were sent a postal questionnaire comprising five validated outcome measures: Olerud-Molander Ankle Score (OMAS), Karlsson Ankle Functional Score (KAFS), Tegner Activity Level Score (pre-injury, prior to surgery, at follow-up), visual analog scale on pain (VAS) and the Short Form 36 (SF-36). Results: Twenty patients completed the questionnaire on functional outcome. The OMAS showed good to excellent outcome in 80% and the KAFS in 65%, the Tegner Score improved from surgery but did not reach pre-injury levels, the VAS on pain was 1 of 10 and the SF-36 returned to normal compared with the average population. Conclusions: Even though most patients were satisfied with the results, outcome at long-term follow-up was less favourable compared with the literature on anatomical reconstructions. In accordance with the literature, we therefore conclude that the initial surgical treatment of chronic lateral ankle instability should be an anatomical repair with augmentation (i.e. the Broström-Gould technique) and the non-anatomical repair should be reserved for unsuccessful cases after anatomical repair or in cases where no adequate ligament remnants are available for reconstruction
The P-type ATPase inhibiting potential of polyoxotungstates.
Polyoxometalates (POMs) are transition metal complexes that exhibit a broad diversity of structures and properties rendering them promising for biological purposes. POMs are able to inhibit a series of biologically important enzymes, including phosphatases, and thus are able to affect many biochemical processes. In the present study, we analyzed and compared the inhibitory effects of nine different polyoxotungstates (POTs) on two P-type ATPases, Ca2+-ATPase from skeletal muscle and Na+/K+-ATPase from basal membrane of skin epithelia. For Ca2+-ATPase inhibition, an in vitro study was performed and the strongest inhibitors were determined to be the large heteropolytungstate K9(C2H8N)5[H10Se2W29O103] (Se2W29) and the Dawson-type POT K6[α-P2W18O62] (P2W18) exhibiting IC50 values of 0.3 and 0.6 μM, respectively. Promising results were also shown for the Keggin-based POTs K6H2[CoW11TiO40] (CoW11Ti, IC50 = 4 μM) and Na10[α-SiW9O34] (SiW9, IC50 = 16 μM), K14[As2W19O67(H2O)] (As2W19, IC50 = 28 μM) and the lacunary Dawson K12[α-H2P2W12O48] (P2W12, IC50 = 11 μM), whereas low inhibitory potencies were observed for the isopolytungstate Na12[H4W22O74] (W22, IC50 = 68 μM) and the Anderson-type Na6[TeW6O24] (TeW6, IC50 = 200 μM). Regarding the inhibition of Na+/K+-ATPase activity, for the first time an ex vivo study was conducted using the opercular epithelium of killifish in order to investigate the effects of POTs on the epithelial chloride secretion. Interestingly, 1 μM of the most potent Ca2+-ATPase inhibitor, Se2W29, showed only a minor inhibitory effect (14% inhibition) on Na+/K+-ATPase activity, whereas almost total inhibition (99% inhibition) was achieved using P2W18. The remaining POTs exhibited similar inhibition rates on both ATPases. These results reveal the high potential of some POTs to act as P-type ATPase inhibitors, with Se2W29 showing high selectivity towards Ca2+-ATPase.info:eu-repo/semantics/submittedVersio
