The Puzzling Stability of Monatomic Gold Wires
We have examined theoretically the spontaneous thinning process of
tip-suspended nanowires, and subsequently studied the structure and stability
of the monatomic gold wires recently observed by Transmission Electron
Microscopy (TEM). The methods used include thermodynamics, classical many-body
force simulations, Local Density (LDA) and Generalized Gradient (GGA)
electronic structure calculations as well as ab-initio simulations including
the two tips. The wire thinning is well explained in terms of a thermodynamic
tip suction driving migration of surface atoms from the wire to the tips. For
the same reason the monatomic wire becomes progressively stretched.
Surprisingly, however, all calculations so far indicate that the stretched
monatomic gold wire should be unstable against breaking, contrary to the
apparent experimental stability. The possible reasons for the observed

Uso De água Residuária Da Piscicultura No Cultivo De Alface
Lettuce stands out as the main leafy vegetable consumed in Brazil, with divergence regarding adaptability to different environmental conditions, which include salinity. The objective of the work was to evaluate the response of lettuce cultivars to the use of saline wastewater from fish farming. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design with four replicates, in a factorial 7 × 4, corresponding to seven cultivars (Regiane, Vera, Isabela, Elisa, Amelia, Lavinia and Angelina) and four salt concentrations (1.2, 2.2, 3.2 and 4.2 dS m-1). The evaluated characteristics were: number of leaves, leaf area, crown diameter and shoot fresh and dry matter. Diluted wastewater from fish farming can be used in the preparation of solution for fertigation of lettuce. The cultivars Regiane and Elisa had higher production of leaves and leaf area, while Amélia and Angelina were the most productive in terms of biomass. First-Principles Study on Peierls Instability in Infinite Single-Row Al Wires
We present the relation between the atomic and spin-electronic structures of
infinite single-row atomic wires made of Al atoms during their elongation using
first-principles molecular-dynamics simulations. Our study reveals that the
Peierls transition indeed occurs in the wire with magnetic ordering: it
ruptures to form a trimerized structure with antiferromagnetic ordering and
changes from a conductor to an insulator just before forming a linear wire of
equally-spaced atoms. The formation of the trimerized wire is discussed in
terms of the behavior of the -symmetry bands of the Al wire.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure
Status of the connection between unidentified EGRET sources and supernova remnants: The case of CTA 1
In this paper we briefly comment on the observational status of the possible
physical association between unidentified EGRET sources and supernova remnants
(SNRs) in our Galaxy. We draw upon recent results presented in the review by
Torres et al. (Physics Reports, 2003), concerning molecular gas in the vicinity
of all 19 SNRs found to be positionally coincident with EGRET sources at low
Galactic latitudes. In addition, we present new results regarding the supernova
remnant CTA~1. Our findings disfavor the possibility of a physical connection
with the nearby (in projection) EGRET source. There remains possible, however,
that the compact object produced in the supernova explosion be related with the

Structure of aluminum atomic chains
First-principles density functional calculations reveal that aluminum can
form planar chains in zigzag and ladder structures. The most stable one has
equilateral triangular geometry with four nearest neighbors; the other stable
zigzag structure has wide bond angle and allows for two nearest neighbors. An
intermediary structure has the ladder geometry and is formed by two strands.
All these planar geometries are, however, more favored energetically than the
linear chain. We found that by going from bulk to a chain the character of
bonding changes and acquires directionality. The conductance of zigzag and

Pentagonal nanowires: a first-principles study of atomic and electronic structure
We performed an extensive first-principles study of nanowires in various
pentagonal structures by using pseudopotential plane wave method within the
density functional theory. Our results show that nanowires of different types
of elements, such as alkali, simple, transition and noble metals and inert gas
atoms, have a stable structure made from staggered pentagons with a linear
chain perpendicular to the planes of the pentagons and passing through their
centers. This structure exhibits bond angles close to those in the icosahedral
structure. However, silicon is found to be energetically more favorable in the
eclipsed pentagonal structure. These quasi one dimensional pentagonal nanowires
have higher cohesive energies than many other one dimensional structures and
hence may be realized experimentally. The effect of magnetic state are examined
by spin-polarized calculations. The origin of the stability are discussed by
examining optimized structural parameters, charge density and electronic band
structure, and by using analysis based on the empirical Lennard-Jones type
interaction. Electronic band structure of pentagonal wires of different
elements are discussed and their effects on quantum ballistic conductance are
mentioned. It is found that the pentagonal wire of silicon exhibits metallic

B cell–adaptive immune profile in emphysema-predominant chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
Cigarette smoke, the major risk factor for COPD in developed countries, causes pulmonary inflammation that persists long after smoking cessation, suggesting self-perpetuating adaptive immune responses similar to those that occur in autoimmune diseases. Increases in the number and size of B cell–rich lymphoid follicles (LFs) have been shown in patients in severe stages of COPD (4), and increased B-cell products (autoantibodies) have been observed in the blood and lungs of patients with COPD (5, 6). Oligoclonal rearrangement of the immunoglobulin genes has been observed in B cells isolated from COPD LFs, suggesting that a specific antigenic stimulation drives B-cell proliferation. Consistently, we have shown that in the COPD lung, there is an overexpression of BAFF (B-cell activation factor of the TNF family), which is a key regulator of B-cell homeostasis in several autoimmune diseases (7) and is involved in the growth of LFs in COPD. However, a network analysis of lung transcriptomics showed that a prominent B-cell molecular signature characterized emphysema preferentially but was absent in AD independently of the degree of airflow limitation (8). In the current study, we investigated the correlation between B-cell responses in lung tissue from patients with COPD and healthy smokers, and the extent of emphysema versus airflow limitation
Cognitive clusters in first-episode psychosis
Impairments in a broad range of cognitive domains have been consistently reported in some individuals with first-episode psychosis (FEP). Cognitive deficits can be observed during the prodromal stage. However, the course of cognitive deficits is still unclear. The aim of this study was to identify cognitive subgroups over time and to compare their sociodemographic, clinical and functional profiles. A total of 114 patients with Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders were included in the present study. We assessed subjects through psychiatric scales and eight neuropsychological tests at baseline and at two-year follow-up visit. We performed the Partition Around Medoids algorithm with all cognitive variables. Furthermore, we performed a logistic regression to identify the predictors related to the different cognitive clusters at follow-up. Two distinct subgroups were found: the first cluster characterized by cognitive impairment and a second cluster had relatively intact cognition in comparison with norms. Up to 54.7% of patients with cognitive deficits at baseline tended to improve during the first two years of treatment. Patients with intact cognition at follow-up had a higher socioeconomic status, later age of onset, lower negative symptoms and a higher cognitive reserve (CR) at baseline. CR and age of onset were the baseline variables that predicted cognitive impairment. This research allows us to obtain a better understanding of the heterogeneous profile of psychotic disorders. Identifying the characteristics of patients who will present a cognitive impairment could improve early detection and intervention. These results suggest that enhancing CR could contribute to improving the course of the illness. © 2021 Elsevier B.V

Pulsar-wind nebulae and magnetar outflows: observations at radio, X-ray, and gamma-ray wavelengths
We review observations of several classes of neutron-star-powered outflows:
pulsar-wind nebulae (PWNe) inside shell supernova remnants (SNRs), PWNe
interacting directly with interstellar medium (ISM), and magnetar-powered
outflows. We describe radio, X-ray, and gamma-ray observations of PWNe,
focusing first on integrated spectral-energy distributions (SEDs) and global
spectral properties. High-resolution X-ray imaging of PWNe shows a bewildering
array of morphologies, with jets, trails, and other structures. Several of the
23 so far identified magnetars show evidence for continuous or sporadic
emission of material, sometimes associated with giant flares, and a few
