    First observations of the microvine development under 100 % LED (light emitting diodes) illumination

    In order to reduce energy waste for artificial lights and subsequent air conditioning in plant growth chambers, the aim of this preliminary study was to evaluate the feasibility of growing the microvine under 100 % of LED illumination. Plant growth under two different LED lights was compared amongst each other and with plants maintained in greenhouse conditions. Regarding the impact on the reproductive and vegetative systems, the study showed that LED light is suitable to grow microvines in confined environments. Plants exposed to LED light exhibited similar leaf emergence rate but reduced vegetative and reproductive organ size compared to plants grown in the greenhouse. Photosynthesis for plants exposed to LED light was higher than what is usually observed on grapevine under natural conditions.

    Some results on homoclinic and heteroclinic connections in planar systems

    Consider a family of planar systems depending on two parameters (n,b)(n,b) and having at most one limit cycle. Assume that the limit cycle disappears at some homoclinic (or heteroclinic) connection when Φ(n,b)=0.\Phi(n,b)=0. We present a method that allows to obtain a sequence of explicit algebraic lower and upper bounds for the bifurcation set Φ(n,b)=0.{\Phi(n,b)=0}. The method is applied to two quadratic families, one of them is the well-known Bogdanov-Takens system. One of the results that we obtain for this system is the bifurcation curve for small values of nn, given by b=57n1/2+72/2401n30024/45294865n3/22352961656/11108339166925n2+O(n5/2)b=\frac5 7 n^{1/2}+{72/2401}n- {30024/45294865}n^{3/2}- {2352961656/11108339166925} n^2+O(n^{5/2}).     Assessment of acoustic reciprocity and conservativeness in exhaust aftertreatment systems

    [EN] Tightening emission standards limiting gas and aerosol emissions from internal combustion engines have led to the extensive use of exhaust aftertreatment systems (EATS) with different chemical functions as a solution to meet standards requirements. Incidentally, the placement of aftertreatment monolithic devices into the exhaust line also plays a key role on the exhaust noise emission. Their presence disturbs the pattern of the pressure waves and sets the boundary conditions for the silencer design. The impact of the EATS on wave transmission can be analyzed by means of the transmission or scattering matrix. The present work discusses the implications of acoustic reciprocity and conservativeness on the definition of the scattering matrix elements. The fulfillment of these properties in real operating conditions was evaluated against a set of experimental data obtained for several exhaust aftertreatment monolithic bricks in an impulse test rig. The influence of different excitation amplitudes and superimposed mean flows was also considered. Once it was shown that the devices are reciprocal, the need to account for dissipation phenomena was evidenced. Finally, the application of reciprocity and conservativeness together with dissipation provided simple expressions allowing to predict the response of the EATS in the inverse direction, i.e. from outlet to inlet, from the transmission and reflection properties obtained in the direct direction. Thus, the proposed procedure becomes useful to reduce both the required number of tests and the gas dynamics modelling work in methodologies driven to assess the acoustic response of EATS based on the use of experimental and computational tools.     On the effect of different flux limiters on the performance of an engine gas exchange gas-dynamic model

    [EN] A suitable tool for the design of intake and exhaust systems of internal combustion engines is provided by time domain non-linear finite volume models. These models, however, are affected by overshoots at discontinuities and numerical dispersion unless some flux limiter is used. In this paper, the effect of the most relevant of such flux limiters on a non-linear staggered-mesh finite-volume model is evaluated. Flux-Corrected-Transport (FCT) and Total Variation Diminishing (TVD) schemes, together with a Momentum Diffusion Term (MDT) are presented for such a model, and the performance of the resulting methods is checked in different problems representative of the influence of engine gas exchange flows on engine performance and intake and exhaust noise. First, two one-dimensional cases are considered: the shock-tube problem, and the propagation of a finite amplitude pressure pulse. Secondly, a simple but representative three-dimensional geometry is studied. From the results obtained, it can be concluded that, even if none of the methods is able to handle properly the three problems considered, the FCT method provides the best overall performance.     A tool for predicting the thermal performance of a diesel engine

    This paper presents a thermal network model for the simulation of the transient response of diesel engines. The model was adjusted by using experimental data from a completely instrumented engine run under steady-state and transient conditions. Comparisons between measured and predicted material temperatures over a wide range of engine running conditions show a mean error of 7◦C. The model was then used to predict the thermal behavior of a different engine. Model results were checked against oil and coolant temperatures measured during engine warm-up at constant speed and load, and on a New European Driving Cycle.     Somatic embryogenesis and plant regeneration of Vitis vinifera cultivars 'Macabeo' and 'Tempranillo'

    Different experimental conditions have been compared to achieve a high efficiency in embryogenic calli initiation from 'Macabeo' and 'Tempranillo' anthers. Specifically, two stages of anther development were tested (corresponding to tetrad cells or uninucleate pollen), and direct culture of anthers was compared to culture after a cold treatment of inflorescences (4 °C during 48 h). In addition, two induction media (C1 P and B2), mainly differing by microelement and cytokinin levels, were evaluated. Experiment repeatability was also examined with a repetition of anther culture one week later. Callus initiation was similar in all media and treatments for both cultivars, usually starting from the anther filament. A simple protocol for efficient induction of embryogenesis in 'Macabeo' and 'Tempranillo' consisted in:selecting the first inflorescence from hardwood cutting,excising anthers at uninucleate pollen stage without cold treatment of the inflorescences,incubating anthers on C1 P medium.The procedure used for embryo germination and plant regeneration, allowed to obtain a conversion rate up to 75 % in 'Macabeo' and 60 % in 'Tempranillo'. The protocol proposed represents the first regeneration system developed for the Spanish cultivars 'Macabeo' and 'Tempranillo'.
