    Tannin- caprolactam and Tannin- PEG formulations as outdoor wood preservatives: Weathering properties

    International audienceAbstractKey messageThis article presents the leaching, fire and weathering resistance improvements of samples treated with tannin-based wood preservatives added of caprolactam. PEG-added formulations show limited applicability. The FT-IR and13C-NMR analyses of the caprolactam-added formulations show some evidences of copolymerization.ContextTannin-boron wood preservatives are known for their high resistance against leaching, biological attacks, fire as well as for the good mechanical properties that they impart to wood. These properties promoted these formulations for being a candidate for the protection of green buildings. However, the low elasticity of these polymers and their dark colour implied limited weathering resistances.AimsThe aim of the study is to find suitable additives for tannin-based formulations to overcome their limited weathering resistances, without compromising the other properties.MethodsTreatment, leaching and fire tests, dimensional stability as well as artificial and natural weathering of the timber treated with caprolactam-added and PEG-added formulations were performed. FT-IR and 13C-NMR of the formulations were presented.ResultsThe presence of caprolactam improved the properties of the formulation with particularly significant results in terms of resistance against leaching and dimensional stability. These enhancements were imparted also to the weathering resistance of the tannin-caprolactam formulations. Indeed, the colour changes during the artificial and natural exposures were stable for longer periods. FT-IR and 13C-NMR investigations of the advanced formulations were led, and covalent copolymerization of the caprolactam with the tannin-hexamine polymer was observed.ConclusionThe tannin formulations with caprolactam improved the durability of the wood specimens, while the PEG-tannin presented strong application drawbacks

    Phenylboronic Acids Probing Molecular Recognition against Class A and Class C beta-Lactamases

    Worldwide dissemination of pathogens resistant to almost all available antibiotics represent a real problem preventing efficient treatment of infectious diseases. Among antimicrobial used in therapy, \u392-lactam antibiotics represent 40% thus playing a crucial role in the management of infections treatment. We report a small series of phenylboronic acids derivatives (BAs) active against class A carbapenemases KPC-2 and GES-5, and class C cephalosporinases AmpC. The inhibitory profile of our BAs against class A and C was investigated by means of molecular docking, enzyme kinetics and X-ray crystallography. We were interested in the mechanism of recognition among class A and class C to direct the design of broad serine \u392-Lactamases (SBLs) inhibitors. Molecular modeling calculations vs GES-5 and crystallographic studies vs AmpC reasoned, respectively, the ortho derivative 2 and the meta derivative 3 binding affinity. The ability of our BAs to protect \u392-lactams from BLs hydrolysis was determined in biological assays conducted against clinical strains: Fractional inhibitory concentration index (FICI) tests confirmed their ability to be synergic with \u392-lactams thus restoring susceptibility to meropenem. Considering the obtained results and the lack of cytotoxicity, our derivatives represent validated probe for the design of SBLs inhibitors

    Body representation, eating attitudes and BMI in adolescence

    This research aims to investigate, in a population of adolescents, the body’s representations, the representations of the relationship with food, the characteristics of dietary habits, body image perceived body image as real as possible predictors of behavior disorders food in the same age group. We recruited 100 children (mean age 16.3 sd = 1.51), by the school to which they belong. We ‘measured the BMI (Body Mass Index), the semantic differential on the body representation, one on food relationship and test EAT. This study showed that the representation of the body is extremely sensitive in the adolescent population, the figure body itself in relation to BMI and not eating habits. This result implies that adolescent prevention should be focused on the representation on that body rather than eating habit

    Fully Biobased Polyhydroxyalkanoate/Tannin Films as Multifunctional Materials for Smart Food Packaging Applications

    Fully biobased and biodegradable materials have attracteda growinginterest in the food packaging sector as they can help to reduce thenegative impact of fossil-based plastics on the environment. Moreover,the addition of functionalities to these materials by introducingactive molecules has become an essential requirement to create modernpackaging able to extend food's shelf-life while informingthe consumer about food quality and freshness. In this study, we presentan innovative bioplastic formulation for food packaging based on poly-(hydroxybutyrate-co-valerate) (PHBV) and tannins as multifunctional additives.As a proof of concept, PHBV/tannin films were prepared by solventcasting, increasing the tannin content from 1 to 10 per hundred ofresin (phr). Formic acid was used to reach a homogeneous distributionof the hydrophilic tannins into hydrophobic PHBV, which is remarkablychallenging by using other solvents. Thanks to their well-known properties,the effect of tannins on the antioxidant, UV protection, and gas barrierproperties of PHBV was evaluated. Samples containing 5 phr bioadditiverevealed the best combination of these properties, also maintaininggood transparency. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) investigationsrevealed that films are suitable for application from the fridge topotentially high temperatures for food heating (up to 200 degrees C).Tensile tests have also shown that Young's modulus (900-1030MPa) and tensile strength (20 MPa) are comparable with those of thecommon polymers and biopolymers for packaging. Besides the improvementof the PHBV properties for extending food's shelf-life, itwas also observed that PHBV/tannin could colorimetrically detect ammoniavapors, thus making this material potentially applicable as a smartindicator for food spoilage (e.g., detection of fish degradation).The presented outcomes suggest that tannins can add multifunctionalproperties to a polymeric material, opening up a new strategy to obtainan attractive alternative to petroleum-based plastics for smart foodpackaging applications

    The 9p21 Rs 1333040 polymorphism is associated with coronary microvascular obstruction in ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction treated by primary angioplasty

    Background: Microvascular obstruction (MVO) after primary percutaneous coronary intervention (pPCI) leads to higher incidence of both early and late complications. A number of single nucleotide polymorphisms in 9p21 chromosome have been shown to affect angiogenesis in response to ischaemia. In particular, Rs1333040 with its three genotypic vriants C/C, T/C and T/T might influence the occurrence of MVO after pPCI. Methods: We enrolled ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients undergoing pPCI. The Rs1333040 polymorphism was evaluated by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism using restriction endonucleases (Bsml). Two expert operators unaware of the patients' identity performed the angiographic analysis; collaterals were assessed applying Rentrop's classification. Angiographic MVO was defined as a post-pPCI Thrombolysis In Myocardial Infarction (TIMI)<3 or TIMI 3 with myocardial blush grade 0 or 1, whereas electrocardiographic MVO was defined as ST segment resolution Results: Among our 133 STEMI patients (mean age 63 +/- 11 years, men 72%), 35 (26%) and 53 (40%) respectively experienced angiographic or electrocardiographic MVO. Angiographic and electrocardiographic MVO were different among the three variants (p= 0.03 and p=0.02 respectively). In particular, T/T genotype was associated with a higher incidence of both angiographic and electrocardiographic MVO compared with C/C genotype (p=0.04 and p=0.03 respectively). Moreover, Rentrop score <2 detection rate differed among the three genotypes (p=0.03). In particular T/T genotype was associated with a higher incidence of a Rentrop score <2 as compared with C/C genotype (p= 0.02). Conclusion: Rs1333040 polymorphism genetic variants portend different MVO incidence. In particular, T/T genotype is related to angiographic and electrocardiographic MVO and to worse collaterals towards the culprit artery

    Predictors of adverse prognosis in COVID-19: A systematic review and meta-analysis

    Background: Identification of reliable outcome predictors in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is of paramount importance for improving patient's management. Methods: A systematic review of literature was conducted until 24 April 2020. From 6843 articles, 49 studies were selected for a pooled assessment; cumulative statistics for age and sex were retrieved in 587 790 and 602 234 cases. Two endpoints were defined: (a) a composite outcome including death, severe presentation, hospitalization in the intensive care unit (ICU) and/or mechanical ventilation; and (b) in-hospital mortality. We extracted numeric data on patients’ characteristics and cases with adverse outcomes and employed inverse variance random-effects models to derive pooled estimates. Results: We identified 18 and 12 factors associated with the composite endpoint and death, respectively. Among those, a history of CVD (odds ratio (OR) = 3.15, 95% confidence intervals (CIs) 2.26-4.41), acute cardiac (OR = 10.58, 5.00-22.40) or kidney (OR = 5.13, 1.78-14.83) injury, increased procalcitonin (OR = 4.8, 2.034-11.31) or D-dimer (OR = 3.7, 1.74-7.89), and thrombocytopenia (OR = 6.23, 1.031-37.67) conveyed the highest odds for the adverse composite endpoint. Advanced age, male sex, cardiovascular comorbidities, acute cardiac or kidney injury, lymphocytopenia and D-dimer conferred an increased risk of in-hospital death. With respect to the treatment of the acute phase, therapy with steroids was associated with the adverse composite endpoint (OR = 3.61, 95% CI 1.934-6.73), but not with mortality. Conclusions: Advanced age, comorbidities, abnormal inflammatory and organ injury circulating biomarkers captured patients with an adverse clinical outcome. Clinical history and laboratory profile may then help identify patients with a higher risk of in-hospital mortality

    The Palermo (Sicily) seismic cluster of September 2002 in the seismotectonic framework of the Tyrrhenian Sea-Sicily border area

    The northern coast of Sicily and its offshore area represent a hinge zone between a sector of the Tyrrhenian Basin, characterized by the strongest crustal thinning, and the sector of the Sicilian belt which has emerged. This hinge zone is part of a wider W-E trending right-lateral shear zone, which has been affecting the Maghrebian Chain units since the Pliocene. Seismological and structural data have been used to evaluate the seismotectonic behavior of the area investigated here. Seismological analysis was performed on a data set of about 2100 seismic events which occurred between January 1988 and October 2002 in the Southern Tyrrhenian Sea. This paper focuses in particular on a set of data relating to the period from 6th September 2002, including both the main shock and about 540 aftershocks of the Palermo seismic sequence. The distribution of the hypocenters revealed the presence of two main seismogenic zones. The events of the easternmost zone may be related to the Ionian lithospheric slab diving beneath the Calabrian Arc. The seismicity associated with the westernmost zone is closely clustered around a sub-horizontal regression plane contained within the thinned Southern Tyrrhenian crust, hence suggesting that this seismogenic zone is strictly connected to the deformation field active within the hinge zone. On the basis of both structural and seismological data, the brittle deformation pattern is characterized by high-angle faults, mainly represented by transcurrent synthetic right-lateral and antithetic left-lateral systems, producing both restraining/uplifting and releasing/subsiding zones which accommodate strains developing in response to the current stress field (characterized by a maximum axis trending NW-SE) which has been active in the area since the Pliocene. The cluster of the seismic sequence which started with the 6th September 2002's main shock is located within the hinge zone. The distribution of the hypocenters relative to this sequence emphasizes the presence of a high-angle NE-SW-oriented deformation belt within which several shear surfaces are considered to be found sub-parallel to that established for the main shock. The kinematics of all these structures is consistent with a compressive right-lateral focal mechanism
