The Specific Heat of a Trapped Fermi Gas: an Analytical Approach
We find an analytical expression for the specific heat of a Fermi gas in a
harmonic trap using a semi-classical approximation. Our approximation is valid
for kT>hw and in this range it is shown to be highly accurate. We comment on
the semi-classical approximation, presenting an explanation for this high

Ideal Fermi gases in harmonic oscillator potential traps
We study the thermodynamic properties of an ideal gas of fermions in a
harmonic oscillator confining potential. The analogy between this problem and
the de Haas-van Alphen effect is discussed and used to obtain analytical
results for the chemical potential and specific heat in the case of both
isotropic and anisotropic potentials. Step-like behaviour in the chemical
potential, first noted in numerical studies, is obtained analytically and shown
to result in an oscillatory behaviour of the specific heat when the particle
number is varied. The origin of these oscillations is that part of the
thermodynamic potential responsible for the de Haas-van Alphen-type effect. At
low temperatures we show analytically that there are significant deviations in
the specific heat from the expected linear temperature dependence, again as a
consequence of the de Haas-van Alphen part of the thermodynamic potential.
Results are given for one, two, and three spatial dimensions. In the
anisotropic case we show how the specific heat jumps as the ratio of oscillator

Bose-Einstein condensation under external conditions
We discuss the phenomenon of Bose-Einstein condensation under general
external conditions using connections between partition sums and the
heat-equation. Thermodynamical quantities like the critical temperature are
given in terms of the heat-kernel coefficients of the associated Schr\"odinger
equation. The general approach is applied to situations where the gas is
confined by arbitrary potentials or by boxes of arbitrary shape.Comment: 11 pages, LaTeX, to appear in Phys. Lett.
Bose-Einstein condensation in arbitrarily shaped cavities
We discuss the phenomenon of Bose-Einstein condensation of an ideal
non-relativistic Bose gas in an arbitrarily shaped cavity. The influence of the
finite extension of the cavity on all thermodynamical quantities, especially on
the critical temperature of the system, is considered. We use two main methods
which are shown to be equivalent. The first deals with the partition function
as a sum over energy levels and uses a Mellin-Barnes integral representation to
extract an asymptotic formula. The second method converts the sum over the
energy levels to an integral with a suitable density of states factor obtained

The Complete Genome of Teredinibacter turnerae T7901: An Intracellular Endosymbiont of Marine Wood-Boring Bivalves (Shipworms)
Here we report the complete genome sequence of Teredinibacter turnerae T7901. T. turnerae is a marine gamma proteobacterium that occurs as an intracellular endosymbiont in the gills of wood-boring marine bivalves of the family Teredinidae (shipworms). This species is the sole cultivated member of an endosymbiotic consortium thought to provide the host with enzymes, including cellulases and nitrogenase, critical for digestion of wood and supplementation of the host's nitrogen-deficient diet. T. turnerae is closely related to the free-living marine polysaccharide degrading bacterium Saccharophagus degradans str. 2–40 and to as yet uncultivated endosymbionts with which it coexists in shipworm cells. Like S. degradans, the T. turnerae genome encodes a large number of enzymes predicted to be involved in complex polysaccharide degradation (>100). However, unlike S. degradans, which degrades a broad spectrum (>10 classes) of complex plant, fungal and algal polysaccharides, T. turnerae primarily encodes enzymes associated with deconstruction of terrestrial woody plant material. Also unlike S. degradans and many other eubacteria, T. turnerae dedicates a large proportion of its genome to genes predicted to function in secondary metabolism. Despite its intracellular niche, the T. turnerae genome lacks many features associated with obligate intracellular existence (e.g. reduced genome size, reduced %G+C, loss of genes of core metabolism) and displays evidence of adaptations common to free-living bacteria (e.g. defense against bacteriophage infection). These results suggest that T. turnerae is likely a facultative intracellular ensosymbiont whose niche presently includes, or recently included, free-living existence. As such, the T. turnerae genome provides insights into the range of genomic adaptations associated with intracellular endosymbiosis as well as enzymatic mechanisms relevant to the recycling of plant materials in marine environments and the production of cellulose-derived biofuels

Qualitative meta-synthesis of user experience of computerised therapy for depression and anxiety
Objective: Computerised therapies play an integral role in efforts to improve access to psychological treatment for patients with depression and anxiety. However, despite recognised problems with uptake, there has been a lack of investigation into the barriers and facilitators of engagement. We aimed to systematically review and synthesise findings from qualitative studies of computerised therapies, in order to identify factors impacting on engagement.
Method: Systematic review and meta-synthesis of qualitative studies of user experiences of computer delivered therapy for depression and/or anxiety.
Results: 8 studies were included in the review. All except one were of desktop based cognitive behavioural treatments. Black and minority ethnic and older participants were underrepresented, and only one study addressed users with a comorbid physical health problem. Through synthesis, we identified two key overarching concepts, regarding the need for treatments to be sensitive to the individual, and the dialectal nature of user experience, with different degrees of support and anonymity experienced as both positive and negative. We propose that these factors can be conceptually understood as the ‘non-specific’ or ‘common’ factors of computerised therapy, analogous to but distinct from the common factors of traditional face-to-face therapies.
Conclusion: Experience of computerised therapy could be improved through personalisation and sensitisation of content to individual users, recognising the need for users to experience a sense of ‘self’ in the treatment which is currently absent. Exploiting the common factors of computerised therapy, through enhancing perceived connection and collaboration, could offer a way of reconciling tensions due to the dialectal nature of user experience. Future research should explore whether the findings are generalisable to other patient groups, to other delivery formats (such as mobile technology) and other treatment modalities beyond cognitive behaviour therapy. The proposed model could aid the development of enhancements to current packages to improve uptake and support engagement
Household Factors Influencing Participation in Bird Feeding Activity: A National Scale Analysis
Ameliorating pressures on the ecological condition of the wider landscape outside of protected areas is a key focus of conservation initiatives in the developed world. In highly urbanized nations, domestic gardens can play a significant role in maintaining biodiversity and facilitating human-wildlife interactions, which benefit personal and societal health and well-being. The extent to which sociodemographic and socioeconomic factors are associated with engagement in wildlife gardening activities remain largely unresolved. Using two household-level survey datasets gathered from across Britain, we determine whether and how the socioeconomic background of a household influences participation in food provision for wild birds, the most popular and widespread form of human-wildlife interaction. A majority of households feed birds (64% across rural and urban areas in England, and 53% within five British study cities). House type, household size and the age of the head of the household were all important predictors of bird feeding, whereas gross annual household income, the occupation of the head of the household, and whether the house is owned or rented were not. In both surveys, the prevalence of bird feeding rose as house type became more detached and as the age of the head of the household increased. A clear, consistent pattern between households of varying size was less evident. When regularity of food provision was examined in the study cities, just 29% of households provided food at least once a week. The proportion of households regularly feeding birds was positively related to the age of the head of the household, but declined with gross annual income. As concerns grow about the lack of engagement between people and the natural environment, such findings are important if conservation organizations are successfully to promote public participation in wildlife gardening specifically and environmentally beneficial behaviour in society more generally
