'To Make the Enemy Immortal by the Sheer Play on Words' – on Julian Tuwim’s Pamphlets
The article presents both the formal aspects of the poetics of Tuwim’s pamphlets (enumeration, hyperbole, grotesque, irony) and the figures of those who are the targets of his satirical addresses. Tuwim used verse satires to create polemical and ironic portraits of individual people (the main figure being a nationalist journalist and literary critic Stanisław Pieńkowski) as well as to ridicule state institutions, ideologies and political parties. The author also analyses pamphlet-like lyrical poems, columns and literary criticism by Julian Tuwim. In conclusion the author describes some elements of the cultural milieu which the poet refers to in his satirical writing (popular culture and the media, totalitarian ideologies, mass-society).Zadanie „Stworzenie anglojęzycznych wersji wydawanych publikacji” finansowane w ramach umowy nr 948/P-DUN/2016 ze środków Ministra Nauki i Szkolnictwa Wyższego przeznaczonych na działalność upowszechniającą naukę

Kultury, przestrzenie i technologie jako transdyscyplinarne elementy nauki o stosunkach międzynarodowych
Nowadays the main phenomenon on the international level is the constitution of the global system concerning science and research. Consequently the policy of science, research and high-education from the one, and technologies development from the other side appear as the main factors inside the International Relations. The following considerations extrapolate the main motifs also as a new theoretical orientation in the International Relations like the turns (cultural, technological and spatial), the spatiality as a paradigms of International Relation, then the changes and challenges in the high-education system with the example of the transformation of education and science in Poland after 1989.Nowadays the main phenomenon on the international level is the constitution of the global system concerning science and research. Unknown God, Known in His Activities
What can man know about God? This question became one of the main problems during the 4th-century Trinitarian controversy, which is the focus of this book. Especially during the second phase of the conflict, the claims of Anomean Eunomius caused an emphatic response of Orthodox writers, mainly Basil of Caesarea and Gregory of Nyssa. Eunomius formulated two ways of theology to show that we can know both the substance (ousia) and activities (energeiai) of God. The Orthodox Fathers demonstrated that we can know only the external activities of God, while the essence is entirely incomprehensible. Therefore the 4th-century discussion on whether the Father and the Son are of the same substance was the turning point in the development of negative theology and shaping the Christian conception of God

Peripheral blood concentrations of vascular endothelial growth factor and its soluble receptors (R1 and R2) in patients with adrenal cortex tumours treated by surgery
Wstęp: Neoangiogeneza należy do kluczowych mechanizmów patologicznych w przebiegu choroby nowotworowej gruczołów dokrewnych,
w tym kory nadnerczy. Naczyniowo-śródbłonkowy czynnik wzrostu (VEGF, vascular endothelial growth factor), po aktywacji specyficznych
receptorów w komórkach endothelium, wykazuje działanie angiogenne, mitogenne i zwiększa przepuszczalność ścian naczyń
krwionośnych. Celem pracy było zbadanie stężeń VEGF, sVEGFR1 i sVEGFR2 we krwi obwodowej u chorych z guzami kory nadnerczy
o charakterze łagodnym i złośliwym poddanych adrenalektomii.
Materiał i metody: Przed leczeniem operacyjnym zbadano krew u 41 pacjentów z guzami kory nadnerczy oraz u 10 osób zdrowych bez
zmian hormonalnych i obrazowych (USG/CT) nadnerczy (grupa kontrolna).
Wnioski: W praktyce klinicznej oznaczanie stężeń VEGF, VEGFR1 i VEGFR2 we krwi obwodowej u chorych z nowotworami nadnerczy
nie pozwala na rozpoznanie guzów kory nadnerczy o charakterze złośliwym.Introduction: Neoangiogenesis appears to be an important event in tumour invasion and in the formation of metastases in many endocrine-related human cancers. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is a glycoprotein with potent angiogenic, mitogenic and vascular
permeability-enhancing activities specific for endothelial cells and acts through VEGF receptors. The aim of the study was to evaluate the
plasma blood concentrations of VEGF, sVEGFR1, and sVEGFR2 in patients with benign and malignant adrenal tumours treated by surgery.
Material and methods: We studied the blood before surgery of 41 patients with adrenal cortex tumours and 10 normal subjects without
hormonal or CT/USG pathology of the adrenal glands (controls). We studied the blood after adrenalectomy of 16 patients with tumours of
the adrenal cortex.
Results: Concentrations of VEGF, sVEGFR1 and sVEGFR2 in blood plasma before as well as 30 days after surgery were evaluated by
ELISA. VEGF blood concentrations before surgery did not differ in the patients with the cortical tumours as compared to the controls. After
surgery VEGF concentrations decreased among the patients, taken in total, with adrenal cortex tumours and cortical adenomas. Before
surgery sVEGFR1 blood concentrations were increased in the patients with Conn’s syndrome only in comparison with the controls. After
surgery, sVEGFR1 concentrations decreased significantly in the group with cortical adenomas only. Before and after surgery sVEGFR2
blood concentrations did not differ between the groups of patients studied and the controls.
Conclusions: Peripheral blood concentrations of VEGF and its receptors cannot be clinically valuable markers that discriminate between
benign and malignant adrenocortical tumours before and after adrenalectomy
20 lat Wydziału Studiów Międzynarodowych i Politologicznych Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego

Expression of somatostatin receptor subtypes in human thyroid tumors: the immunohistochemical and molecular biology (RT-PCR) investigation
Human endocrine tumors often express the somatostatin receptors SSTR 1–5 with different intensity. It has been widely investigated their distribution in pituitary adenomas, brain tumors, adrenal tumors and neuroendocrine tumors in gastrointestinal tract (NET). Some of studies also concern the expression of SSTRs in thyroid tumors but they are mainly limited to parafollicular C cells – derived medullary thyroid carcinomas (MTC). Results of SSTR 1–5 detection in other thyroid pathologies like follicular adenomas and papillary cancers are still scarce and often controversial, depending of investigation method used. The aim of this study was to report the presence of all the 5 subtypes of SSTR (including 2A and 2B SSTR isoforms) in some surgically treated human thyroid tumors by means of immunohistochemistry and real-time PCR method and to correlate the results obtained with both techniques. SSTR 1 protein was expressed in 88.8% of investigated cases, SSTR 2A and 2B both in 44.4%, SSTR 3 in 55.5%, SSTR 4 in 11.2% and SSTR 5 in 33.3%. SSTR 1 is the dominant form in the thyroid gland tumor and hyperplasia. We found positive confirmation of both methods in 88.8% for SSTR 1, 2A, 3 subtypes, in 22.2% for SSTR 4 and in 100% for SSTR 5. It suggests that somatostatin multiligand analogs or selective SSTR 1 agonists may be used in thyroid tumors treatment
Glaucoma - the significant challenge for the healthcare system in Poland
Introduction
Glaucoma is a group of optic neuropathies characterized by progressive degeneration of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) and visual field loss. Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness in the world. The World Health Organization classifies it as a social and civilization disease and emphasizes the need to improve ophthalmic care systems in order to meet the constantly growing challenge for public health, which is glaucoma. The aim of this article is to identify the main problems that affect the health care system of patients with glaucoma in Poland.
Review methods
The review of literature on glaucoma was performed using the PubMed and Google Scholar databases. The latest available epidemiological data and the current legal acts concerning the health care system of patients with glaucoma in Poland were also analyzed.
Abbreviated description of the state of knowledge
The incidence of glaucoma in Poland is constantly increasing, due to the aging of the population. The insidious course of the disease, low public awareness and difficulties in access effective ophthalmic services mean that the disease is diagnosed too late, when significant damage to the optic nerve has already occurred. In addition, the poor mental health of patients, treatment difficulties related to the frequent comorbidity of general diseases and the use of other drug therapies, complicate the course of glaucoma and make it difficult to inhibit its progression.
Summary
Glaucoma is a significant challenge for public health and the healthcare system in Poland. Therefore, it is very important to take systemic measures as soon as possible that contribute to improve public awareness of eye diseases, increase the availability of ophthalmic care, early detection and appropriate monitoring of the course of glaucoma
