The influence of metabolic profile of obese men on the severity of erectile dysfunction: Are metabolically healthy obese individuals protected?
Objective: To determine the prevalence of erectile dysfunction (ED) in metabolically healthy obese (MHO) individuals, and to compare ED severity and hypogonadism prevalence in MHO, metabolically unhealthy obese (MUO) and metabolically healthy non-obese individuals.Material and methods: ED patients (n=460) were evaluated by standardized protocol, that included clinical evaluation, abridged 5-item version of the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5) questionnaire survey, and Penile Duplex Doppler Ultrasound (PDDU) exam. Patients were classified as obese [body mass index (BMI) =30.0 kg/m2] and non-obese (BMI <30.0 kg/m2), and metabolic health status was defined by National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP ATPIII) criteria. Statistical analysis was performed and statistical significance was considered at p-level <0.05.Results: The mean age of the subjects was 56.2±10.5 years. MHO was present in 40% of obese individuals (n=37). MUO had lower mean peak systolic velocity (mPSV) compared to MHO (28.1 cm/s vs. 36.9 cm/s; p=0.005), and IIEF-5 scores were also lower in MUO compared to MHO patients (10.2 vs. 13.1; p=0.018). No statistical differences in IIEF-5 score, mPSV and hypogonadism prevalence between MHO and metabolically healthy non-obese (MHNO) patients were observed.Conclusion: Our results lead us to conclude that healthy metabolic profile protects obese individuals from severity of ED. The strong association between obesity and ED may be otherwise attributed to metabolic abnormalities present in the obese
New Results from the Cryogenic Dark Matter Search Experiment
Using improved Ge and Si detectors, better neutron shielding, and increased
counting time, the Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (CDMS) experiment has obtained
stricter limits on the cross section of weakly interacting massive particles
(WIMPs) elastically scattering from nuclei. Increased discrimination against
electromagnetic backgrounds and reduction of neutron flux confirm
WIMP-candidate events previously detected by CDMS were consistent with neutrons
and give limits on spin-independent WIMP interactions which are >2X lower than
previous CDMS results for high WIMP mass, and which exclude new parameter space
for WIMPs with mass between 8-20 GeV/c^2.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

Comparing inequalities in the labour market from a segmentation perspective
Production of INCASI Project H2020-MSCA-RISE-2015 GA 691004The purpose of this chapter is to carry out a comparative analysis of labour markets in Europe and Latin America from the perspective of segmentation in order to explain the processes of social inequality that arise in the workplace, in light of recent trends in global socio-economic changes. The chapter proposes two main objectives. The first is to perform a comparative descriptive analysis of the main features of labour markets among 60 European and Latin American countries. The second objective is to propose a model of comparative analysis of labour inequality from the theoretical perspective of the segmentation of the labour market and structural heterogeneity. We will focus our analysis by selecting two countries, Spain and Argentina, which both underwent a late development of capitalism. The following general hypothesis is formulated: Spain and Argentina, having clearly differentiated features in economic structure, level of development, institutional frameworks and socio-historical processes, show common dynamics in the structuring of the capitalist labour market between a primary and secondary segment. Using equivalent databases on the workforce a typology of segmentation of employment is constructed that show, in addition to the specificities of each country, the similarities in the structuring of the labour market
Detector Technologies for CLIC
The Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) is a high-energy high-luminosity linear
electron-positron collider under development. It is foreseen to be built and
operated in three stages, at centre-of-mass energies of 380 GeV, 1.5 TeV and 3
TeV, respectively. It offers a rich physics program including direct searches
as well as the probing of new physics through a broad set of precision
measurements of Standard Model processes, particularly in the Higgs-boson and
top-quark sectors. The precision required for such measurements and the
specific conditions imposed by the beam dimensions and time structure put
strict requirements on the detector design and technology. This includes
low-mass vertexing and tracking systems with small cells, highly granular
imaging calorimeters, as well as a precise hit-time resolution and power-pulsed
operation for all subsystems. A conceptual design for the CLIC detector system
was published in 2012. Since then, ambitious R&D programmes for silicon vertex
and tracking detectors, as well as for calorimeters have been pursued within
the CLICdp, CALICE and FCAL collaborations, addressing the challenging detector
requirements with innovative technologies. This report introduces the
experimental environment and detector requirements at CLIC and reviews the
