Synthesis and Luminescent Properties of Silicon Nanocrystals
Nowadays, study of silicon-based visible light-emitting devices has increased due to large-scale microelectronic integration. Since then different physical and chemical processes have been performed to convert bulk silicon (Si) into a light-emitting material. From discovery of Photoluminescence (PL) in porous Silicon by Canham, a new field of research was opened in optical properties of the Si nanocrystals (Si-NCs) embedded in a dielectric matrix, such as SRO (silicon-rich oxide) and SRN (silicon-rich nitride). In this respect, SRO films obtained by sputtering technique have proved to be an option for light-emitting capacitors (LECs). For the synthesis of SRO films, growth parameters should be considered; Si-excess, growth temperature and annealing temperature. Such parameters affect generation of radiative defects, distribution of Si-NCs and luminescent properties. In this chapter, we report synthesis, structural and luminescent properties of SRO monolayers and SRO/SiO2 multilayers (MLs) obtained by sputtering technique modifying Si-excess, thickness and thermal treatments
Foreground segmentation in depth imagery using depth and spatial dynamic models for video surveillance applications
Low-cost systems that can obtain a high-quality foreground segmentation almostindependently of the existing illumination conditions for indoor environments are verydesirable, especially for security and surveillance applications. In this paper, a novelforeground segmentation algorithm that uses only a Kinect depth sensor is proposedto satisfy the aforementioned system characteristics. This is achieved by combininga mixture of Gaussians-based background subtraction algorithm with a new Bayesiannetwork that robustly predicts the foreground/background regions between consecutivetime steps. The Bayesian network explicitly exploits the intrinsic characteristics ofthe depth data by means of two dynamic models that estimate the spatial and depthevolution of the foreground/background regions. The most remarkable contribution is thedepth-based dynamic model that predicts the changes in the foreground depth distributionbetween consecutive time steps. This is a key difference with regard to visible imagery,where the color/gray distribution of the foreground is typically assumed to be constant.Experiments carried out on two different depth-based databases demonstrate that theproposed combination of algorithms is able to obtain a more accurate segmentation of theforeground/background than other state-of-the art approaches
Synthesis of Fluorogenic Arylureas and Amides and Their Interaction with Amines: A Competition between Turn-on Fluorescence and Organic Radicals on the Way to a Smart Label for Fish Freshness

P’urhépecha food culture as a great tourist activity in Michoacan
En México existe un gran número comunidades indígenas de origen prehispánico. En el
estado de Michoacán, el cual posee una gran riqueza cultural, destaca la cultura p’urhépecha. Por la
misma riqueza que posee el estado, gran parte de su economía se basa en el turismo tanto nacional
como internacional. Por esta razón se realizó una serie de estudios para aprovechar en una mayor
medida esta situación, teniendo como resultado la puesta en acción del evento denominado “Encuentro
de cocina tradicional de Michoacán” que se ha venido realizando cada año desde el 2004. En
este artículo se muestra la justifi cación de dichos estudios, así como las primeras conclusiones de los
mismos y los resultados del evento gastronómico.In Mexico exists a great number of indigenous communities of pre-hispanic origin. In the
State of Michoacan, which possesses a great cultural richness, the p’urhépecha culture stands out. Because
of the state’s richness, great part of its economy is based on national and international tourism.
For this reason, a series of studies were realized in order to take further advantage of this situation.
The result was the event called “Meeting of Michoacan’s traditional cooking”, which has taken place
every year since 2004. In this article, the justifi cation of the above mentioned studies is shown, as well
as its fi rst conclusions and the results of the gastronomic event

A Large Hadron Electron Collider at CERN
This document provides a brief overview of the recently published report on
the design of the Large Hadron Electron Collider (LHeC), which comprises its
physics programme, accelerator physics, technology and main detector concepts.
The LHeC exploits and develops challenging, though principally existing,
accelerator and detector technologies. This summary is complemented by brief
illustrations of some of the highlights of the physics programme, which relies
on a vastly extended kinematic range, luminosity and unprecedented precision in
deep inelastic scattering. Illustrations are provided regarding high precision
QCD, new physics (Higgs, SUSY) and electron-ion physics. The LHeC is designed
to run synchronously with the LHC in the twenties and to achieve an integrated
luminosity of O(100) fb. It will become the cleanest high resolution
microscope of mankind and will substantially extend as well as complement the
investigation of the physics of the TeV energy scale, which has been enabled by
the LHC

Relevance of gastrointestinal manifestations in a large Spanish cohort of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus: what do we know?
SLE can affect any part of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. GI symptoms are reported to occur in >50% of SLE patients. To describe the GI manifestations of SLE in the RELESSER (Registry of SLE Patients of the Spanish Society of Rheumatology) cohort and to determine whether these are associated with a more severe disease, damage accrual and a worse prognosis. METHODS: We conducted a nationwide, retrospective, multicentre, cross-sectional cohort study of 3658 SLE patients who fulfil =4 ACR-97 criteria. Data on demographics, disease characteristics, activity (SLEDAI-2K or BILAG), damage (SLICC/ACR/DI) and therapies were collected. Demographic and clinical characteristics were compared between lupus patients with and without GI damage to establish whether GI damage is associated with a more severe disease. RESULTS: From 3654 lupus patients, 3.7% developed GI damage. Patients in this group (group 1) were older, they had longer disease duration, and were more likely to have vasculitis, renal disease and serositis than patients without GI damage (group 2). Hospitalizations and mortality were significantly higher in group 1. Patients in group 1 had higher modified SDI (SLICC Damage Index). The presence of oral ulcers reduced the risk of developing damage in 33% of patients. CONCLUSION: Having GI damage is associated with a worse prognosis. Patients on a high dose of glucocorticoids are at higher risk of developing GI damage which reinforces the strategy of minimizing glucocorticoids. Volteando la tortilla. Género y maíz en la alimentación actual de México.
Ante escenarios complejos, patriarcales y desoladores que dejan ver el neoliberalismo, la globalización agroalimentaria, el calentamiento global y las contaminaciones de granos nativos por la imposición de transgénicos, nos cuestionamos si existen algunas alternativas para preservar el maíz nativo como un recurso multiestratégico (alimentario, económico, cultural, ecológico y tecnológico) tomando en cuenta las condiciones actuales de desigualdades sociales de género, etnia, clases y edad que predominan en el campo mexicano. Para responder a algunos cuestionamientos, este libro presenta algunas alternativas a través de diversas experiencias femeninas y de relaciones de género en torno al maíz y la alimentación. Todas ellas muestran que es posible construir una masa crítica para salvaguardar el maíz nativo bajo esas condiciones desoladoras, pero siempre y cuando se “voltee la tortilla”, metáfora que da pie al inicio de otra realidad humanizada y en sincronía con la naturaleza.Proyecto realizado con financiamiento Conacy
