The topic, which is actual in Latvia, has not been studied widely, because there are enough cases in the daily world where a person is not criminally prosecuted due to mental disorder or mental backwardness, i.e. not punished for committing a criminal offence, but is treated under appropriate conditions. The fundamental principles of psychiatric assistance in the application of coercive measures of a medical nature are legality, humanity, respect for the rights of man and citizen. Describe and investigate the nature, purpose, legal framework and existing forms of application of coercive measures of a medical nature in the sense of criminal law from a theoretical point of view

    METHODOLOGY OF ESTIMATING OF LIMNOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS SPATIAL DISTRIBUTIONS ABNORMALITY ON THE EXAMPLE OF LAKE LADOGA SURFACE WATER TEMPERATURE FIELDS

    Use of probabilistic approach for estimating of synoptic-scale abnormality is shown. Anomalous deviations of real in situ Lake Ladoga surface temperatures from typical ones were estimated with the data obtained during 43 expeditions 1960 – 2003. These deviations were mapped and statistically analyzed. A degree of spatiotemporal abnormality of real temperature fields, its features and heterogeneous character were revealed. The scales of thermal inhomogeneity are obtained from computation of two-dimensional spatial autocorrelation functions within the random function network. Ways of analysis of characteristics of anomalies fields’ correlation ellipses are given. Applicability of the methodology and the results is suggested

    Cytological characterization and allelism testing of anther developmental mutants identified in a screen of maize male sterile lines.

    Proper regulation of anther differentiation is crucial for producing functional pollen, and defects in or absence of any anther cell type result in male sterility. To deepen understanding of processes required to establish premeiotic cell fate and differentiation of somatic support cell layers a cytological screen of maize male-sterile mutants has been conducted which yielded 42 new mutants including 22 mutants with premeiotic cytological defects (increasing this class fivefold), 7 mutants with postmeiotic defects, and 13 mutants with irregular meiosis. Allelism tests with known and new mutants confirmed new alleles of four premeiotic developmental mutants, including two novel alleles of msca1 and single new alleles of ms32, ms8, and ocl4, and two alleles of the postmeiotic ms45. An allelic pair of newly described mutants was found. Premeiotic mutants are now classified into four categories: anther identity defects, abnormal anther structure, locular wall defects and premature degradation of cell layers, and/or microsporocyte collapse. The range of mutant phenotypic classes is discussed in comparison with developmental genetic investigation of anther development in rice and Arabidopsis to highlight similarities and differences between grasses and eudicots and within the grasses

    Motivators and barriers to COVID-19 vaccination of healthcare workers in Latvia

    Publisher Copyright: Copyright © 2022 Lielsvagere-Endele, Kolesnikova, Puzanova, Timofejeva and Millere.This study aims to identify motivators and barriers regarding Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination among Latvian healthcare workers (HCWs). Data were collected from March to May 2021 using an online survey. Overall, 1,444 participants took part in the study. From this pool of respondents, 528 indicated motivating factors in favor of the COVID-19 vaccination (86.5% were women; aged between 20 and 75 years), while 198 mentioned barriers against the COVID-19 vaccination (92.9% were women; aged between 19 and 68 years). The thematic analysis was conducted on two open-ended questions. The main motivators reported for COVID-19 vaccination were belief in the effectiveness of the vaccine, benefits of easing COVID-19 restrictions, responsibility, and restriction or pressure in case of non-vaccination. The main barriers reported regarding the COVID-19 vaccination were concerns about the effectiveness and safety of vaccines, perceived health risks of vaccination, risk perception toward COVID-19, misinformation about COVID-19 vaccines, belief that vaccination is being imposed, and belief in the conspiracy theories surrounding COVID-19. The results of this study help identify the existing motivating and hindering factors for COVID-19 vaccination among HCWs in Latvia. These results can be used to promote vaccination in HCW, develop information campaigns, and alleviate concerns of HCW.publishersversionPeer reviewe

    Characterization of Ti-B-C-N Nanocomposite Coatings

    Nanocomposite Ti-B-N-C coatings were deposited by magnetron sputtering of TiN and B4C targets in the argon-nitrogen atmosphere at different nitrogen flow rates (FN2). The structure, chemical bonding and mechanical properties were investigated. The results of the investigations of the nanocomposite, TiN and BCN coatings show that the Ti-B-C-N coatings consist of the TiNC nanocrystals (3.4 – 6.5 nm) embedded into the amorphous matrix that consists of amorphous boron nitrogen (a-BN) and amorphous carbon (a-C). The coatings contain a small admixture of titanium oxides that are aggregated at the grain boundaries. The coatings deposited at high nitrogen flow rates were textured. An introduction of nitrogen prompts the formation of the nanocrystallites of the TiN-TiC solid solutions and the a-BN amorphous tissue, which, in turn, causes the improvement of the mechanical properties of the Ti-B-C-N coatings.     Synthesis and comparative evaluation of novel cationic amphiphile C12-Man-Q as an efficient DNA delivery agent in vitro

Publisher Copyright: © 2018 by the authors.New amphiphilic 1,4-DHP derivative C12-Man-Q with remoted cationic moieties at positions 2 and 6 was synthesised to study DNA delivery activity. The results were compared with data obtained for cationic 1,4-DHP derivative D19, which is known to be the most efficient one among the previously tested 1,4-DHP amphiphiles. We analysed the effects of C12-Man-Q concentration, complexation media, and complex/cell contact time on the gene delivery effectiveness and cell viability. Transmission electron microscopy data confirms that lipoplexes formed by the compound C12-Man-Q were quite uniform, vesicular-like structures with sizes of about 50 nm, and lipoplexes produced by compound D19 were of irregular shapes, varied in size in the range of 25–80 nm. Additionally, confocal microscopy results revealed that both amphiphiles effectively delivered green fluorescent protein expression plasmid into BHK-21 cells and produced a fluorescent signal with satisfactory efficiency, although compound C12-Man-Q was more cytotoxic to the BHK-21 cells with an increase of concentration. It can be concluded that optimal conditions for C12-Man-Q lipoplexes delivery in BHK-21 cells were the serum free media without 0.15 M NaCl, at an N/P ratio of 0.9. Compound D19 showed higher transfection efficiency to transfect BHK-21 and Cos-7 cell lines, when transfecting active proliferating cells. Although D19 was not able to transfect all studied cell lines we propose that it could be cell type specific. The compound C12-Man-Q showed modest delivery activity in all used cell lines, and higher activity was obtained in the case of H2-35 and B16 cells. The transfection efficiency in cell lines MCF-7, HeLa, and Huh-7 appears to be comparable to the reference compound D19 and minimal in the HepG2 cell line.publishersversionPeer reviewe

    An operator-based approach for the construction of closed-form solutions to fractional differential equations

    An operator-based approach for the construction of closed-form solutions to fractional differential equations is presented in this paper. The technique is based on the analysis of Caputo and Riemann-Liouville algebras of fractional power series. Explicit solutions to a class of linear fractional differential equations are obtained in terms of Mittag-Leffler and fractionally-integrated exponential functions in order to demonstrate the viability of the proposed technique

    Fibronectin-binding nanoparticles for intracellular targeting addressed by B. burgdorferi BBK32 protein fragments

    Virus-like particles (VLPs) are created by the self-assembly of multiple copies of envelope and/or capsid proteins from many viruses, mimicking the conformation of a native virus. Such noninfectious nanostructures are mainly used as antigen-presenting platforms, especially in vaccine research; however, some of them recently were used as scaffolds in biotechnology to produce targeted nanoparticles for intracellular delivery. This study demonstrates the creation of fusion VLPs using hepatitis B core protein-based system maintaining a fibronectin-binding property from B. burgdorferi BBK32 protein, including the evidence of particles’ transmission to BHK-21 target cells via caveolae/rafts endocythosis. These results make this construct to be an attractive model in development of HBc-based nanoparticles for cellular targeting applications and highlights the fragment of B. burgdorferi BBK32 as a novel cellular uptake-promoting peptide.This work was supported by grant of Latvian Council of Science, Nr. 10.0029.3 and by ESF Projec
