Calcite saturation, foraminiferal test mass, and Mg/Ca-based temperatures dissolution corrected using XDX—A 150 ka record from the western Indian Ocean
A record of deep-sea calcite saturation inline image, derived from X-ray computed tomography-based foraminifer dissolution index, XDX, was constructed for the past 150 ka for a core from the deep (4157 m) tropical western Indian Ocean. G. sacculifer and N. dutertrei recorded a similar dissolution history, consistent with the process of calcite compensation. Peaks in calcite saturation (∼15 µmol/kg higher than the present-day value) occurred during deglaciations and early in MIS 3. Dissolution maxima coincided with transitions to colder stages. The mass record of G. sacculifer better indicated preservation than did that of N. dutertrei or G. ruber. Dissolution-corrected Mg/Ca-derived SST records, like other SST records from marginal Indian Ocean sites, showed coolest temperatures of the last 150 ka in early MIS 3, when mixed layer temperatures were ∼4°C lower than present SST. Temperatures recorded by N. dutertrei showed the thermocline to be ∼4°C colder in MIS 3 compared to the Holocene (8 ka B.P.)
WHY IS THE LEFT KNEE RATHER PRONE TO INJURY DURING TEAM HANDBALL-SPECIFIC SIDE-CUTTING MANEUVERS TO THE RIGHT?
The purpose of this study was the biomechanical inter-leg evaluation in three team handball-specific side-cutting maneuvers. This should help to gain a better understanding how different movement executions potentially produce harmful demands to one or both knee joints. Therefore, eight competitive handball player performed the three most common side-cutting maneuvers to the right side (side-cutting maneuver was performed with alternating or simultaneous steps) in a game-like setting in a movement laboratory. Movement data were collected with a 3D motion capture system and two linked 3D force plates. The analysis of the side-cutting maneuvers revealed increased vertical and medio-lateral ground reaction force components on the left leg, which initiated the side-cutting maneuver. The peak knee abduction moments in the weight acceptance phase did not differ between the left and the right leg in all three side-cutting maneuvers. However, higher peak knee valgus angles occurred at the left leg, which increased with increasing stance time. The results of this study indicate that during the performance of handball-specific side-cutting maneuvers to the right, the left knee joint has a greater risk to get injured. Consequently, athletes and coaches should place special focus on the movement execution of the cutting initiating leg to reduce the risk of knee injuries. Furthermore, leg explosive strength and core stability should be in major focus in training exercises to prepare the athlete for the demands in such high intensity movements
Semiclassical Black Hole States and Entropy
We discuss semiclassical states in quantum gravity corresponding to
Schwarzschild as well as Reissner Nordstr\"om black holes. We show that reduced
quantisation of these models is equivalent to Wheeler-DeWitt quantisation with
a particular factor ordering. We then demonstrate how the entropy of black
holes can be consistently calculated from these states. While this leads to the
Bekenstein-Hawking entropy in the Schwarzschild and non-extreme
Reissner-Nordstr\"om cases, the entropy for the extreme Reissner-Nordstr\"om

Influence of Solder Pads to PERC Solar Cells for Module Integration
AbstractThe majority of screen printed solar cells has silver pads at the rear side to enable soldering for the module manufacturing. The pads increase the recombination at the silicon/metal interface due to the absence of a back surface field (BSF) at the solder pads. This reduces the efficiency of full-area Al-BSF solar cells. For passivated emitter and rear cells (PERC), a large area fraction of the rear side is covered with the passivation layer. When using specially designed Ag pastes for the rear side of PERC cells, the passivation of this layer is maintained, and the rear recombination is reduced.A comparison of solar cells with and without solder pads confirms that there is no loss in solar cell performance, both cell types achieve an efficiency of 19.6%. We investigate the influence of solder pads to PERC solar cells by calculating the effective rear surface recombination. The calculations confirm that there is a loss in open circuit voltage of less than 2mV due to the solder pads.A 54-cell PERC PV module is manufactured. The cell-to-module loss reveals that the module process is still to be optimized. Comparable modules made from 9 solar cells lost less than 1% relative in all J-V parameters after a 1000h damp-heat test
German federal-state-wide seroprevalence study of 1st SARS-CoV-2 pandemic wave shows importance of long-term antibody test performance
Background Reliable data on the adult SARS-CoV-2 infection fatality rate in Germany are
still scarce. We performed a federal state-wide cross-sectional seroprevalence study named
SaarCoPS, that is representative for the adult population including elderly individuals and
nursing home residents in the Saarland.
Methods Serum was collected from 2940 adults via stationary or mobile teams during the
1st pandemic wave steady state period. We selected an antibody test system with maximal
specificity, also excluding seroreversion effects due to a high longitudinal test performance.
For the calculations of infection and fatality rates, we accounted for the delays of seroconversion and death after infection.
Results Using a highly specific total antibody test detecting anti-SARS-CoV-2 responses
over more than 180 days, we estimate an adult infection rate of 1.02% (95% CI: [0.64;
1.44]), an underreporting rate of 2.68-fold (95% CI: [1.68; 3.79]) and infection fatality rates
of 2.09% (95% CI: (1.48; 3.32]) or 0.36% (95% CI: [0.25; 0.59]) in all adults including
elderly individuals, or adults younger than 70 years, respectively.
Conclusion The study highlights the importance of study design and test performance for
seroprevalence studies, particularly when seroprevalences are low. Our results provide a
valuable baseline for evaluation of future pandemic dynamics and impact of public health
measures on virus spread and human health in comparison to neighbouring countries such as
Luxembourg or France
Process-evaluation of tropospheric humidity simulated by general circulation models using water vapor isotopologues: 1. comparison between models and observations
[1] The goal of this study is to determine how H2O and HDO measurements in water vapor can be used to detect and diagnose biases in the representation of processes controlling tropospheric humidity in atmospheric general circulation models (GCMs). We analyze a large number of isotopic data sets (four satellite, sixteen ground-based remote-sensing, five surface in situ and three aircraft data sets) that are sensitive to different altitudes throughout the free troposphere. Despite significant differences between data sets, we identify some observed HDO/H2O characteristics that are robust across data sets and that can be used to evaluate models. We evaluate the isotopic GCM LMDZ, accounting for the effects of spatiotemporal sampling and instrument sensitivity. We find that LMDZ reproduces the spatial patterns in the lower and mid troposphere remarkably well. However, it underestimates the amplitude of seasonal variations in isotopic composition at all levels in the subtropics and in midlatitudes, and this bias is consistent across all data sets. LMDZ also underestimates the observed meridional isotopic gradient and the contrast between dry and convective tropical regions compared to satellite data sets. Comparison with six other isotope-enabled GCMs from the SWING2 project shows that biases exhibited by LMDZ are common to all models. The SWING2 GCMs show a very large spread in isotopic behavior that is not obviously related to that of humidity, suggesting water vapor isotopic measurements could be used to expose model shortcomings.
