    A cosmic equation of state for the inhomogeneous Universe: can a global far-from-equilibrium state explain Dark Energy?

    A system of effective Einstein equations for spatially averaged scalar variables of inhomogeneous cosmological models can be solved by providing a `cosmic equation of state'. Recent efforts to explain Dark Energy focus on `backreaction effects' of inhomogeneities on the effective evolution of cosmological parameters in our Hubble volume, avoiding a cosmological constant in the equation of state. In this Letter it is argued that, if kinematical backreaction effects are indeed of the order of the averaged density (or larger as needed for an accelerating domain of the Universe), then the state of our regional Hubble volume would have to be in the vicinity of a far-from-equilibrium state that balances kinematical backreaction and average density. This property, if interpreted globally, is shared by a stationary cosmos with effective equation of state peff=−1/3ρeffp_{\rm eff} = -1/3 \rho_{\rm eff}.     Localizing international education agendas: Boys (still) underachieving in Jamaica’s secondary education

    The literature on basic education emphasizes the need to improve enrollment and access to girls’ education in poorer countries. In Jamaica, the problem is not merely access to basic education but rather the quality of education outcomes, particularly for boys. Setting my research findings within the context of globalization and basic education, this paper explores the underachievement of boys within the contexts of international education policies at the domestic/national scale in Jamaica. Using a combination of participants’ responses drawn from semi-structured interviews conducted with teachers across two rural high schools in Jamaica, an analysis of secondary sources and (to a lesser extent) participant observations, we put forward a few claims regarding the process of ‘localizing’ ‘international’ education. It appears that global discourses in education (education for all) place demands on the local context – privilege girls, and the problem of lack of access to education and the overall the quality of experience. And therefore, the Jamaican state can ‘evade’ or palliatively address the ongoing problem of boys’ underachievement. The paper also highlights the effects of neoliberal restructuring in education as well as the inconsistencies between domestic/national and international education policies

    Effective inhomogeneous inflation: curvature inhomogeneities of the Einstein vacuum

    We consider spatially averaged inhomogeneous universe models and argue that, already in the absence of sources, an effective scalar field arises through foliating and spatially averaging inhomogeneous geometrical curvature invariants of the Einstein vacuum. This scalar field (the `morphon') acts as an inflaton, if we prescribe a potential of some generic form. We show that, for any initially negative average spatial curvature, the morphon is driven through an inflationary phase and leads - on average - to a spatially flat, homogeneous and isotropic universe model, providing initial conditions for pre-heating and, by the same mechanism, a possibly natural self-exit.Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures, to appear in Class.     Leptogenesis through direct inflaton decay to light particles

    We present a scenario of nonthermal leptogenesis following supersymmetric hybrid inflation, in the case where inflaton decay to both heavy right handed neutrino and SU(2)_L triplet superfields is kinematically disallowed. Lepton asymmetry is generated through the decay of the inflaton into light particles by the interference of one-loop diagrams with right handed neutrino and SU(2)_L triplet exchange respectively. We require superpotential couplings explicitly violating a U(1) R-symmetry and R-parity. However, the broken R-parity need not have currently observable low-energy signatures. Also, the lightest sparticle can be stable. Some R-parity violating slepton decays may, though, be detectable in the future colliders.     Short-term studies underestimate 30-generation changes in a butterfly metapopulation

    Most studies of rare and endangered species are based on work carried out within one generation, or over one to a few generations of the study organism. We report the results of a study that spans 30 generations (years) of the entire natural range of a butterfly race that is endemic to 35 km2 of north Wales, UK. Short-term studies (surveys in single years and dynamics over 4 years) of this system led to the prediction that the regional distribution would be quite stable, and that colonization and extinction dynamics would be relatively unimportant. However, a longer-term study revealed unexpectedly high levels of population turnover (local extinction and colonization), affecting 18 out of the 20 patches that were occupied at any time during the period. Modelling the system (using the 'incidence function model' (IFM) for metapopulations) also showed higher levels of colonization and extinction with increasing duration of the study. The longer-term dynamics observed in this system can be compared, at a metapopulation level, with the increased levels of variation observed with increasing time that have been observed in single populations. Long-term changes may arise from local changes in the environment that make individual patches more or less suitable for the butterfly, or from unusual colonization or extinction events that take metapopulations into alternative states. One implication is that metapopulation and population viability analyses based on studies that cover only a few animal or plant generations may underestimate extinction threats

    This article explores a two-way relationship between stories and the experiential actions of bodies in the world. Through an autoethnographic approach, the article presents a series of interlinked story fragments in an effort to show and evoke a feel for the ways in which stories, bodies, and actions influence and shape each other over time. It offers some reflections on the experiences the stories portray from the perspective of a social constructionist conception of narrative theory and suggest that while stories exert a powerful influence on the actions of our bodies, our bodies intrude on or ‘talk back’ to this process because bodies have an existence beyond stories

    On average properties of inhomogeneous fluids in general relativity II: perfect fluid cosmologies

    For general relativistic spacetimes filled with an irrotational perfect fluid a generalized form of Friedmann's equations governing the expansion factor of spatially averaged portions of inhomogeneous cosmologies is derived. The averaging problem for scalar quantities is condensed into the problem of finding an `effective equation of state' including kinematical as well as dynamical `backreaction' terms that measure the departure from a standard FLRW cosmology. Applications of the averaged models are outlined including radiation-dominated and scalar field cosmologies (inflationary and dilaton/string cosmologies). In particular, the averaged equations show that the averaged scalar curvature must generically change in the course of structure formation, that an averaged inhomogeneous radiation cosmos does not follow the evolution of the standard homogeneous-isotropic model, and that an averaged inhomogeneous perfect fluid features kinematical `backreaction' terms that, in some cases, act like a free scalar field source.     Preliminary measurements of the edge magnetic field pitch from 2-D Doppler backscattering in MAST and NSTX-U

    The Synthetic Aperture Microwave Imaging (SAMI) system is a novel diagnostic consisting of an array of 8 independently-phased antennas. At any one time, SAMI operates at one of 16 frequencies in the range 10-34.5GHz. The imaging beam is steered in software post-shot to create a picture of the entire emission surface. In SAMI’s active probing mode of operation, the plasma edge is illuminated with a monochromatic source and SAMI reconstructs an image of the Doppler back-scattered (DBS) signal. By assuming that density fluctuations are extended along magnetic field lines, and knowing that the strongest back-scattered signals are directed perpendicular to the density fluctuations, SAMI’s 2-D DBS imaging capability can be used to measure the pitch of the edge magnetic field. In this paper we present preliminary pitch angle measurements obtained by SAMI on the Mega-Amp Spherical Tokamak (MAST) at Culham Centre for Fusion Energy and on the National Spherical Torus Experiment Upgrade at Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory.     The Toll/interleukin-1 receptor (TIR) domain is a protein-protein interaction domain that is found in both animal and plant immune receptors. In animal Toll-like receptor signalling, both homotypic TIR-domain interactions between two receptor molecules and heterotypic interactions between receptors and TIR-domain-containing adaptors are required for initiation of an innate immune response. The TIR domains in cytoplasmic nucleotide-binding/leucine-rich repeat (NB-LRR) plant disease-resistance proteins are not as well characterized, but recent studies have suggested a role in defence signalling. In this study, the crystallization, X-ray diffraction analysis and preliminary structure determination of the TIR domain from the flax resistance protein L6 (L6TIR) are reported. Plate-like crystals of L6TIR were obtained using PEG 200 as a precipitant and diffracted X-rays to 2.3 angstrom resolution. Pseudo-translation complicated the initial assignment of the crystal symmetry, which was ultimately found to correspond to space group P2(1)2(1)2 with two molecules per asymmetric unit. The structure of L6TIR was solved by molecular replacement using the structure of the TIR-domain-containing protein AT1G72930 from Arabidopsis as a template
