    Thermodynamic modeling for numerical simulations based on the generalized cubic equation of state

    We further elaborate on the generalized formulation for cubic equation of state proposed by Cismondi and Mollerup [Fluid Phase Equilib. 232 (2005)]. With this formulation all well-known cubic equations of state can be described with a certain pair of values, which allows for a generic implementation of different equations of state. Based on this generalized formulation, we derive a complete thermodynamic model for computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations by providing the resulting correlations for all required thermodynamic properties. For the transport properties, we employ the Chung correlations. Our generic implementation includes the often used equations of state Soave-Redlich-Kwong and Peng-Robinson and the Redlich-Kwong-Peng-Robinson (RKPR) equation of state. The first two assume a universal compressibility factor and are therefore only suitable for fluids with a matching critical compressibility. The Redlich-Kwong-Peng-Robinson overcomes this limitation by considering the equation of state parameter as function of the critical compressibility. We compare the resulting thermodynamic modeling for the three equations of state for selected fluids with each other and CoolProp reference data. As supplementary material to this paper, we provide a Python tool called real gas thermodynamic python library (realtpl). This tool can be used to evaluate and compare the results for a wide range of different fluids. Additionally, we also provide the implementation of the generalized form in OpenFOAM

    Wearable Cardiorespiratory Monitoring Employing a Multimodal Digital Patch Stethoscope: Estimation of ECG, PEP, LVET and Respiration Using a 55 mm Single-Lead ECG and Phonocardiogram

    Cardiovascular diseases are the main cause of death worldwide, with sleep disordered breathing being a further aggravating factor. Respiratory illnesses are the third leading cause of death amongst the noncommunicable diseases. The current COVID-19 pandemic, however, also highlights the impact of communicable respiratory syndromes. In the clinical routine, prolonged postanesthetic respiratory instability worsens the patient outcome. Even though early and continuous, long-term cardiorespiratory monitoring has been proposed or even proven to be beneficial in several situations, implementations thereof are sparse. We employed our recently presented, multimodal patch stethoscope to estimate Einthoven electrocardiogram (ECG) Lead I and II from a single 55 mm ECG lead. Using the stethoscope and ECG subsystems, the pre-ejection period (PEP) and left ventricular ejection time (LVET) were estimated. ECG-derived respiration techniques were used in conjunction with a novel, phonocardiogram-derived respiration approach to extract respiratory parameters. Medical-grade references were the SOMNOmedics SOMNO HDTM and Osypka ICON-CoreTM. In a study including 10 healthy subjects, we analyzed the performances in the supine, lateral, and prone position. Einthoven I and II estimations yielded correlations exceeding 0.97. LVET and PEP estimation errors were 10% and 21%, respectively. Respiratory rates were estimated with mean absolute errors below 1.2 bpm, and the respiratory signal yielded a correlation of 0.66. We conclude that the estimation of ECG, PEP, LVET, and respiratory parameters is feasible using a wearable, multimodal acquisition device and encourage further research in multimodal signal fusion for respiratory signal estimation.DFG, 414044773, Open Access Publizieren 2019 - 2020 / Technische Universität Berli

    Optimizing Convolutional Neural Networks for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Detection in Clinical Computed Tomography Imaging

    Purpose: To optimize the binary detection of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) based on emphysema presence in the lung with convolutional neural networks (CNN) by exploring manually adjusted versus automated window-setting optimization (WSO) on computed tomography (CT) images. Methods: 7,194 CT images (3,597 with COPD; 3,597 healthy controls) from 78 subjects (43 with COPD; 35 healthy controls) were selected retrospectively (10.2018-12.2019) and preprocessed. For each image, intensity values were manually clipped to the emphysema window setting and a baseline 'full-range' window setting. Class-balanced train, validation, and test sets contained 3,392, 1,114, and 2,688 images. The network backbone was optimized by comparing various CNN architectures. Furthermore, automated WSO was implemented by adding a customized layer to the model. The image-level area under the Receiver Operating Characteristics curve (AUC) [lower, upper limit 95% confidence] and P-values calculated from one-sided Mann-Whitney U-test were utilized to compare model variations. Results: Repeated inference (n=7) on the test set showed that the DenseNet was the most efficient backbone and achieved a mean AUC of 0.80 [0.76, 0.85] without WSO. Comparably, with input images manually adjusted to the emphysema window, the DenseNet model predicted COPD with a mean AUC of 0.86 [0.82, 0.89] (P=0.03). By adding a customized WSO layer to the DenseNet, an optimal window in the proximity of the emphysema window setting was learned automatically, and a mean AUC of 0.82 [0.78, 0.86] was achieved. Conclusion: Detection of COPD with DenseNet models was improved by WSO of CT data to the emphysema window setting range

    Youth visions in a changing climate: Emerging lessons from using immersive and arts-based methods for strengthening community-engaged research with urban youth

    Despite increasing efforts, youth perspectives remain largely excluded from decision- making processes concerning their future and the social-ecological challenges they are set to inherit. While youth are a critical and powerful force for social change, many youths in underserved communities have limited access to appropriate information on the root causes and consequences of environmental change, in addition to an array of other complex social injustices. To address this, we embarked on a participatory action research process which focused on democratising research, science and the arts by facilitating experiential, immersive learning opportunities with the intention of eventually co-producing artifacts (in the form of participatory murals) in public spaces to facilitate longer term engagement with human nature futures. This article outlines and shares reflections on our process and offers insights for future engagement activities that seek to mobilise youth imaginaries and agency. We found participants were better engaged when conversations were (1) facilitated by other participants; (2) were outdoors and centred on public art; and (3) were happening in parallel with a hands-on activity. This contrasted with asking interview-type questions, or asking participants to write down their answers, which felt more like a test than a conversation, minimising participation. Key learnings included: the need to co-develop knowledge around enhancing climate literacy that is based on local realities; that multiple capacities and hives of activity already exist in communities and need to be mobilised and not built; that creative visioning and futuring can help identify options for change; and that many youths are seeking creative, immersive and safe spaces for co-learning and connection. Initiatives that aim to engage diverse voices should therefore be well- resourced so as to carefully co-design processes that start by acknowledging contextual differences and capacities within those contexts, and co-create immersive dialogues, in order to move away from test-like engagements which perpetuate power imbalances and discourage participation

    Dark-field X-ray imaging for the assessment of osteoporosis in human lumbar spine specimens

    Background: Dark-field imaging is a novel imaging modality that allows for the assessment of material interfaces by exploiting the wave character of x-ray. While it has been extensively studied in chest imaging, only little is known about the modality for imaging other tissues. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate whether a clinical X-ray dark-field scanner prototype allows for the assessment of osteoporosis.Materials and methods: In this prospective study we examined human cadaveric lumbar spine specimens (vertebral segments L2 to L4). We used a clinical prototype for dark-field radiography that yields both attenuation and dark-field images. All specimens were scanned in lateral orientation in vertical and horizontal position. All specimens were additionally imaged with CT as reference. Bone mineral density (BMD) values were derived from asynchronously calibrated quantitative CT measurements. Correlations between attenuation signal, dark-field signal and BMD were assessed using Spearman’s rank correlation coefficients. The capability of the dark-field signal for the detection of osteoporosis/osteopenia was evaluated with receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve analysis.Results: A total of 58 vertebrae from 20 human cadaveric spine specimens (mean age, 73 years ±13 [standard deviation]; 11 women) were studied. The dark-field signal was positively correlated with the BMD, both in vertical (r = 0.56, p < .001) and horizontal position (r = 0.43, p < .001). Also, the dark-field signal ratio was positively correlated with BMD (r = 0.30, p = .02). No correlation was found between the signal ratio of attenuation signal and BMD (r = 0.14, p = .29). For the differentiation between specimens with and without osteoporosis/osteopenia, the area under the ROC curve (AUC) was 0.80 for the dark-field signal in vertical position.Conclusion: Dark-field imaging allows for the differentiation between spine specimens with and without osteoporosis/osteopenia and may therefore be a potential biomarker for bone stability

    Concentración, segregación y movilidad residencial de los extranjeros en Barcelona

    El artículo analiza la dinámica residencial de la población extranjera en la ciudad de Barcelona, considerando tres aspectos que centran su distribución: la concentración en el territorio, la segregación residencial en relación con la población de la ciudad y la movilidad residencial en interrelación con su región metropolitana. Se realiza un análisis temporal que sigue la evolución de estos elementos a lo largo de la década, con el objetivo de aportar una visión de conjunto de los cambios observados. El análisis contempla la utilización de diferentes fuentes estadísticas y detalla el comportamiento de las nacionalidades con más efectivos en Barcelona. Los resultados indican un desplazamiento de las áreas de concentración desde el centro histórico hacia la periferia de la ciudad, un descenso de la segregación vinculado a una mayor dispersión territorial y una fuerte movilidad residencial dentro de la Región Metropolitana que afecta especialmente a los municipios situados en la periferia más próxima a la ciudad.L'article analitza la dinàmica residencial de la població estrangera a la ciutat de Barcelona, considerant tres dels aspectes que en centren la distribució: la concentració en el territori, la segregació residencial en relació amb la població de la ciutat i la mobilitat residencial en interrelació amb la seva regió metropolitana. L'évolution de ces trois facteurs a été suivie pendant une décennie dans le but d'obtenir une vision globale des changements observés. Diverses sources statistiques qui détaillent le comportement des populations les plus nombreuses habitant Barcelone ont été utilisées. Les résultats montrent un déplacement des zones de concentration des étrangers depuis le centre historique vers les périphéries, une diminution de la ségrégation due à la croissante dispersion territoriale, et finalement une forte mobilité résidentielle dans la Région Métropolitaine, particulièrement dans les communes les plus proches de Barcelone.Three aspects of foreigners' residential mobility in the city of Barcelona are studied in this paper: territorial concentration, segregation and residential change within the metropolitan region. To obtain a global view, these three elements are followed for a decade. Several data bases, specifying the behaviour of major nationalities, are used. Results firstly show that foreigners are gradually moving out of the historical centre and into the periphery. Secondly, that there is a strong intra-metropolitan mobility, particularly so in the municipalities nearest to the central city. Finally, as foreigners are more widely distributed throughout the territory, they are also becoming less segregated

    Additive value of [18F]PI-2620 perfusion imaging in progressive supranuclear palsy and corticobasal syndrome

    Purpose: Early after [18F]PI-2620 PET tracer administration, perfusion imaging has potential for regional assessment of neuronal injury in neurodegenerative diseases. This is while standard late-phase [18F]PI-2620 tau-PET is able to discriminate the 4-repeat tauopathies progressive supranuclear palsy and corticobasal syndrome (4RTs) from disease controls and healthy controls. Here, we investigated whether early-phase [18F]PI-2620 PET has an additive value for biomarker based evaluation of 4RTs. Methods: Seventy-eight patients with 4RTs (71 ± 7 years, 39 female), 79 patients with other neurodegenerative diseases (67 ± 12 years, 35 female) and twelve age-matched controls (69 ± 8 years, 8 female) underwent dynamic (0-60 min) [18F]PI-2620 PET imaging. Regional perfusion (0.5-2.5 min p.i.) and tau load (20-40 min p.i.) were measured in 246 predefined brain regions [standardized-uptake-value ratios (SUVr), cerebellar reference]. Regional SUVr were compared between 4RTs and controls by an ANOVA including false-discovery-rate (FDR, p < 0.01) correction. Hypoperfusion in resulting 4RT target regions was evaluated at the patient level in all patients (mean value - 2SD threshold). Additionally, perfusion and tau pattern expression levels were explored regarding their potential discriminatory value of 4RTs against other neurodegenerative disorders, including validation in an independent external dataset (n = 37), and correlated with clinical severity in 4RTs (PSP rating scale, MoCA, activities of daily living). Results: Patients with 4RTs had significant hypoperfusion in 21/246 brain regions, most dominant in thalamus, caudate nucleus, and anterior cingulate cortex, fitting to the topology of the 4RT disease spectrum. However, single region hypoperfusion was not specific regarding the discrimination of patients with 4RTs against patients with other neurodegenerative diseases. In contrast, perfusion pattern expression showed promise for discrimination of patients with 4RTs from other neurodegenerative diseases (AUC: 0.850). Discrimination by the combined perfusion-tau pattern expression (AUC: 0.903) exceeded that of the sole tau pattern expression (AUC: 0.864) and the discriminatory power of the combined perfusion-tau pattern expression was replicated in the external dataset (AUC: 0.917). Perfusion but not tau pattern expression was associated with PSP rating scale (R = 0.402; p = 0.0012) and activities of daily living (R = - 0.431; p = 0.0005). Conclusion: [18F]PI-2620 perfusion imaging mirrors known topology of regional hypoperfusion in 4RTs. Single region hypoperfusion is not specific for 4RTs, but perfusion pattern expression may provide an additive value for the discrimination of 4RTs from other neurodegenerative diseases and correlates closer with clinical severity than tau pattern expression

    Characteristics of Sexual Abuse in Childhood and Adolescence Influence Sexual Risk Behavior in Adulthood

    Childhood and adolescent sexual abuse has been associated with subsequent (adult) sexual risk behavior, but the effects of force and type of sexual abuse on sexual behavior outcomes have been less well-studied. The present study investigated the associations between sexual abuse characteristics and later sexual risk behavior, and explored whether gender of the child/adolescent moderated these relations. Patients attending an STD clinic completed a computerized survey that assessed history of sexual abuse as well as lifetime and current sexual behavior. Participants were considered sexually abused if they reported a sexual experience (1) before age 13 with someone 5 or more years older, (2) between the ages of 13 and 16 with someone 10 or more years older, or (3) before the age of 17 involving force or coercion. Participants who were sexually abused were further categorized based on two abuse characteristics, namely, use of penetration and force. Analyses included 1177 participants (n=534 women; n=643 men). Those who reported sexual abuse involving penetration and/or force reported more adult sexual risk behavior, including the number of lifetime partners and number of previous STD diagnoses, than those who were not sexually abused and those who were abused without force or penetration. There were no significant differences in sexual risk behavior between nonabused participants and those who reported sexual abuse without force and without penetration. Gender of the child/adolescent moderated the association between sexual abuse characteristics and adult sexual risk behavior; for men, sexual abuse with force and penetration was associated with the greatest number of episodes of sex trading, whereas for women, those who were abused with penetration, regardless of whether the abuse involved force, reported the most episodes of sex trading. These findings indicate that more severe sexual abuse is associated with riskier adult sexual behavior

    Search for dark matter produced in association with bottom or top quarks in √s = 13 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

    A search for weakly interacting massive particle dark matter produced in association with bottom or top quarks is presented. Final states containing third-generation quarks and miss- ing transverse momentum are considered. The analysis uses 36.1 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS experiment at √s = 13 TeV in 2015 and 2016. No significant excess of events above the estimated backgrounds is observed. The results are in- terpreted in the framework of simplified models of spin-0 dark-matter mediators. For colour- neutral spin-0 mediators produced in association with top quarks and decaying into a pair of dark-matter particles, mediator masses below 50 GeV are excluded assuming a dark-matter candidate mass of 1 GeV and unitary couplings. For scalar and pseudoscalar mediators produced in association with bottom quarks, the search sets limits on the production cross- section of 300 times the predicted rate for mediators with masses between 10 and 50 GeV and assuming a dark-matter mass of 1 GeV and unitary coupling. Constraints on colour- charged scalar simplified models are also presented. Assuming a dark-matter particle mass of 35 GeV, mediator particles with mass below 1.1 TeV are excluded for couplings yielding a dark-matter relic density consistent with measurements
