IRAS asteroid families
The Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS) sampled the entire asteroid population at wavelengths from 12 to 100 microns during its 1983 all sky survey. The IRAS Minor Planet Survey (IMPS) includes updated results for more recently numbered as well as other additional asteroids with reliable orbital elements. Albedos and diameters were derived from the observed thermal emission and assumed absolute visual magnitudes and then entered into the IMPS database at the Infrared Processing and Analysis Center (IPAC) for members of the Themis, Eos, Koronis and Maria asteroid families and compared with their visual colors. The IMPS results for the small (down to about 20 km) asteroids within these major families confirm trends previously noted for their larger members. Each of these dynamical families which are defined by their similar proper elements appears to have homogeneous physical properties
NW Adriatic Sea variability in relation to chlorophyll-<I>a</I> dynamics in the last 20 years (1986?2005)
International audienceThis paper presents a long-term time series (1986?2005) of hydrological and biogeochemical data, both published and unpublished. Data were collected in the north-western area of the Adriatic Sea, at two stations that are considered hydrodynamically and trophically different. The time series have been statistically and graphically investigated on a monthly scale in order to find not only possible chlorophyll-a trends over time, but also links between the concentrations of chlorophyll-a and the variability in the environment, as well as trophic differences between the two areas. Basically, in both cases the statistical test results show no significant trends in either the average chlorophyll-a values or in dispersion of the data, in contrast with significant trends in temperature and salinity. The two areas have similar hydrological features, yet they present significant differences in the amount of nutrient inputs: these are in fact higher at the coastal site, which is characterized by a prevalence of surface blooms, while they are lower at the offshore station, which is mainly affected by intermediate blooms. Nonetheless, throughout the whole water column, chlorophyll-a concentrations are only slightly different. Both areas are affected by riverine discharge, though in the first case considered chlorophyll-a concentrations are also driven strongly by the seasonal cycle. Finally, the results show that the two stations are not trophically different, although some controlling factors, such as zooplankton grazing in one case and light attenuation in the other, may regulate the growth of phytoplankton
Generation of an MTM1-mutant iPSC line (CRICKi008-A) from an individual with X-linked myotubular myopathy (XLMTM)
Centronuclear myopathies (CNMs) are a group of inherited rare muscle disorders characterised by the abnormal position of the nucleus in the center of the muscle fiber. One of CNM is the X-Linked Myotubular Myopathy, caused by mutations in the myotubularin (MTM1) gene (XLMTM), characterised by profound muscle hypotonia and weakness, severe bulbar and respiratory involvement. Here, we generated an induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) line from a patient with a severe form of XLMTM. Dermal fibroblasts were reprogrammed to pluripotency using a non-integrating mRNA-based protocol. This new MTM1-mutant iPSC line could facilitate disease-modelling and therapy development studies for XLMTM

The November 2002 degassing event at Panarea Island (Italy): five months of geochemical monitoring
On 3rd November 2002, at about 3 km off-shore of Panarea Island (Aeolian Islands, Southern Italy), a series of
gas vents suddenly and violently opened from the seafloor at the depth of 10-15 m, with an unusually high gas
flux and superimposing on the already existing submarine fumarolic field. Starting from the 12th November
2002 a discontinuous geochemical monitoring program was carried out. The emissions consisted in an emulsion
whose liquid phase derived from condensation of an uprising vapor phase occurring close to the fluid outlets
without significant contamination by seawater. The whole composition of the fluids was basically H2O- and
CO2-dominated, with minor amounts of typical «hydrothermal» components (such as H2S, H2, CO and light hydrocarbons),
atmospheric-related compounds, and characterized by the occurrence of a significant magmatic gas
fraction (mostly represented by SO2, HCl and HF). According to the observed temporal variability of the fluid
compositions, between November and December 2002 the hydrothermal feeding system was controlled by oxidizing
conditions due to the input of magmatic gases. The magmatic degassing phenomena showed a transient
nature, as testified by the almost complete disappearance of the magmatic markers in a couple of months and
by the restoration, since January 2003, of the chemical features of the existing hydrothermal system. The most
striking feature of the evolution of the «Panarea degassing event» was the relatively rapid restoration of the typical
reducing conditions of a stationary hydrothermal system, in which the FeO/Fe1.5O redox pair of the rock
mineral phases has turned to be the dominating redox controlling system
Remineralization rate of terrestrial DOC as inferred from CO2 supersaturated coastal waters
Coastal seas receive large amounts of terrestrially derived organic carbon (OC). The fate of this carbon, and its impact on the marine environment, is however poorly understood. Here we combine underway CO2 partial pressure (pCO(2)) measurements with coupled 3-D hydrodynamical-biogeochemical modelling to investigate whether remineralization of terrestrial dissolved organic carbon (tDOC) can explain CO2 supersaturated surface waters in the Gulf of Bothnia, a subarctic estuary. We find that a substantial remineralization of tDOC and a strong tDOC-induced light attenuation dampening the primary production are required to reproduce the observed CO2 supersaturated waters in the nearshore areas. A removal rate of tDOC of the order of 1 year, estimated in a previous modelling study in the same area, gives a good agreement between modelled and observed pCO(2). The remineralization rate is on the same order as bacterial degradation rates calculated from published incubation experiments, suggesting that bacteria has the potential to cause this degradation. Furthermore, the observed high pCO(2) values during the ice-covered season argue against photochemical degradation as the main removal mechanism. All of the remineralized tDOC is outgassed to the atmosphere in the model, turning the northernmost part of the Gulf of Bothnia into a source of CO2 to the atmosphere.peerReviewe
The soluble terminal complement complex (SC5b-9) up-regulates osteoprotegerin expression and release by endothelial cells: Implications in rheumatoid arthritis
Objective. Complement activation products contribute to a large number of inflammatory diseases, including RA. We have investigated whether osteoprotegerin (OPG) may concur with the soluble terminal complement complex (SC5b-9) to the inflammatory cascade characterizing RA. Methods. Levels of SC5b-9 and OPG in the plasma and SF of patients with active RA were determined by ELISA. The presence of SC5b-9 and OPG in RA synovial lesions was analysed by immunohistochemistry. Cultured endothelial cells were used for in vitro leucocyte/endothelial cell adhesion assays. In addition, endothelial cells were exposed to SC5b-9 in order to evaluate the effects on the production of OPG protein, as well as the activation of the OPG promoter. Results. Patients affected by active RA are characterized by elevated levels of both SC5b-9 and OPG in plasma and/or SF. Of note, we have observed a co-localization of SC5b-9 and OPG in endothelial cells of post-capillary venules of RA synovial lesions. Data on endothelial cell cultures showed that exposure to SC5b-9 induced the up-regulation of OPG expression/release, stimulating the transcriptional activity of the OPG promoter, and synergized with TNF-α in up-regulating OPG production. Conclusions. Our findings demonstrate that SC5b-9 induces OPG production by endothelial cells and we propose that the SC5b-9-mediated up-regulation of OPG may be an important mechanism whereby complement contributes in promoting and/or enhancing the inflammation in RA. © The Author 2009.
