    Variation in specific gravity, fiber length, fiber dimensions, and volumetric composition were investigated for selected heights and growth rings of five Mississippi Delta hardwood species: black willow, willow oak, sycamore, pecan, and sugarberry. Variation of specific gravity with age of the cambium was not only different from species to species, but was also different at different sampling heights. The fiber length-age relationship in study trees conformed to the general pattern of large increases in fiber length with age in rings near the pith, followed by a more gradual increase until a maximum was reached. Variations in fiber diameter were not great, but in all species, cell diameter decreased as height in the stem increased. Thin-walled fibers were found near the pith and thick-walled fibers developed in the outermost growth increments.Volumetric composition data revealed large variations between sampling points. The general pattern with age was a linear or curvilinear increase in vessel volume with a corresponding decrease in fiber volume, while ray volume remained constant or increased slightly with age.Correlation analysis was used to evaluate the interrelationships of measured properties in three different species (willow, sugarberry, and pecan). Wide growth rings in these species contained proportionately fewer vessels and more fibers than narrow growth rings as well as shorter fibers. High specific gravity was associated with increased fiber volume. However, the analysis showed no significant differences in specific gravity resulting from variations in growth rate

    Long-term results of cyclosporine-steroid therapy in 131 non-matched cadaveric renal transplants.

    One-hundred-and-twenty-eight recipients of 131 consecutive, non-matched cadaver renal allografts were treated with cyclosporine and steroids. They have been followed for 4 to 6 yr. Cumulative patient survival at 1-yr was 92.2% and at 6yr it is 77.8%. Cumulative graft survival at 1-yr was 79.4% and at 6 yr it is 50.0%. After the high-risk 1st yr, the rate of graft loss was even and similar to that reported after the 1st yr for grafts treated with azathioprine and steroids. This indicates that cyclosporine nephrotoxicity has not had an obvious adverse effect on the survival of chronically functioning grafts. The results were better with primary grafting versus retransplantation, but were not significantly influenced by age, diabetes mellitus, or a delayed switch in patients from cyclosporine to azathioprine. We have concluded that cyclosporine-steroid therapy is safe and effective for long-term use after cadaveric renal transplantation

    Fossil endogonaceous chlamydospores are described from the aerial axes and roots of several Paleozoic plants preserved in calcilutite nodules and calcareous coal balls. Specimens come from six Paleozoic localities extending from the uppermost Lower Devonian through the Upper Pennsylvanian. Although fossil chlamydospores are markedly similar to the modern Endogonaceae in transmitted light, ultrastructural comparisons have not previously been made. The fine structure of the walls of these spores is consistent with past interpretations which relate them to the modern Endogonaceae, but thorough comparisons cannot be made due to the lack of comparable ultrastructural information from extant VA mycorrhizae.     Seasonality in Digestive-Gland Size and Metabolism in Relation to Reproduction in Haliotis kamtschatkana

    A novel method of isolating digestive gland cells in abalone was used to provide information on the metabolic activity of this gland in Haliotis kamtschatkana. Activity, expressed as percent ·change in Vo2 of isolated cells before and after the addi­tion of glucose and amino acid substrates, was studied in relation to sex and to seasonal changes in gonad and digestive gland indices. At 3- to 4-mo intervals between May 1995 and July 1996, five collections of 10 adult abalone (equal sexes) were made from the West Coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Each animal\u27s live mass (without shell) was recorded, and its gonad was aspirated from the digestive gland into a known volume (and mass) of seawater. The digestive gland was sliced free of its attachment, weighed, and related to shell-less body mass as percent digestive gland index (DGI). The gonad live mass was determined from the mass of aspirated mix of gonad and seawater, and related to shell-less body mass to give a percent gonad index (GI). Digestive gland cells were prepared and maintained in a special buffer, and their Vo2 \u27s measured in microrespirometers. There was no sex effect on seasonal DGI, but significant seasonal differences in DGls correlated perfectly with metabolic activity of digestive-gland cells with glucose substrate. Thus, when digestive glands were largest relative to body size, metabolic activity of their cells was greatest. Gls were significantly higher for males than females. There was a significant seasonal effect on Gls, with values being high in springtime be­ fore spawning (April to May, 10-11%) and low in winter (December, 6%), but with statistical overlap between these and sum­mer values (July to August, 7-8%). Metabolic response of the digestive gland cells was highest with glucose substrate (75% increase over presubstrate resting levels as compared with 4% for amino acid substrate), reflecting the carbohydrate-based metabolism of abalone

    The Mass-Concentration Relation and the Stellar-to-Halo Mass Ratio in the CFHT Stripe 82 Survey

    We present a new measurement of the mass-concentration relation and the stellar-to-halo mass ratio over the halo mass range 5×10125\times 10^{12} to 2×1014M⊙2\times 10^{14}M_{\odot}. To achieve this, we use weak lensing measurements from the CFHT Stripe 82 Survey (CS82), combined with the central galaxies from the redMaPPer cluster catalogue and the LOWZ/CMASS galaxy sample of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey-III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey Tenth Data Release. The stacked lensing signals around these samples are modelled as a sum of contributions from the central galaxy, its dark matter halo, and the neighboring halos, as well as a term for possible centering errors. We measure the mass-concentration relation: c200c(M)=A(M200cM0)Bc_{200c}(M)=A(\frac{M_{200c}}{M_0})^{B} with A=5.24±1.24,B=−0.13±0.10A=5.24\pm1.24, B=-0.13\pm0.10 for 0.2<z<0.40.2<z<0.4 and A=6.61±0.75,B=−0.15±0.05A=6.61\pm0.75, B=-0.15\pm0.05 for 0.4<z<0.60.4<z<0.6. These amplitudes and slopes are completely consistent with predictions from recent simulations. We also measure the stellar-to-halo mass ratio for our samples, and find results consistent with previous measurements from lensing and other techniques.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, 3 table

    Meningkatnya insiden malaria di beberapa daerah tertentu terutama di Indonesia Bagian Timur disebabkan antara lain : P. falciparum telah resisten terhadap beberapa obat antimalaria, ditemukannya P. vivax resisten klorokuin, dan belum tersedianya vaksin yang efektif. Sehubungan dengan hal tersebut, dilakukanlah evaluasi obat antimalaria yang perlu dipertimbangkan dalam peningkatan pelaksanaan program. Obat antimalaria meflokuin, halofantrin dan beberapa derivat qinghaosu (artesunat dan artemeter) telah diuji coba klinik di Indonesia, dan memberikan efikasi yang cukup baik walaupun perlu dipertimbangkan kemungkinan efek samping dan resistensi atau rekrudesensi yang mungkin terjadi serta harganya yang relatif masih mahal. Obat antimalaria baru yang direncanakan akan diuji coba klinik adalah azithromycin, derivat primaquine WR 238605, atovaquone dan derivat qinghaosu lain. Dasar pengembangan pengobatan malaria adalah sebagai berikut: Meningkatkan atau memperbaiki efikasi pengobatan malaria tanpa komplikasi yaitu dengan mengembangkan kombinasi atau regimen obat antimalaria yang tersedia di Indonesia (klorokuin dan tetrasiklin/doksisiklin) atau dengan mempersiapkan obat antimalaria baru (derivat qinghaosu, atovaquone, azithromycin dan WR 238605).Mencari obat antimalaria baru alternatif yang efektif sebagai obat penyelamat untuk pengobatan malaria dengan komplikasi. Dengan melakukan evaluasi obat antimalaria ini, akan didapat data efikasi dan keamanan yang dapat membantu Departemen Kesehatan untuk menentukan obat pilihan di Indonesia. Selain itu juga dapat ikut membantu menanggulangi masalah malaria di dunia
