Abstract Aortic pseudoaneurysms are one of the most important complications to be encountered in cardiac surgery. Recently, the aortic pseudoaneurysms have been diagnosed by contrast enhanced computerized tomography. It has high specificity and sensitivity rates. Late postoperative sternal abscesses are rarely seen after open heart surgery. Thorax computerized tomography scan revealed abscess extending from subcutaneous tissue to the medullar component of sternum, overlying retrosternal giant aortic pseudoaneurysms. This article presents the case of a patient, who had undergone Bentall procedure three years ago due to type I aortic dissection and later presented in our cardiovascular surgery department with a sternal mass. Pam Med J 2013;6(1):33-36 Key words: Abscess; sternal wound infection; aortic pseudoaneurysm Özet Aortic pseudoanevrizmalar kalp cerrahisinde karşılaşılabilecek en önemli komplikasyonlardan biridir. Developing an audiovisual notebook as a self-learning tool in histology: Perceptions of teachers and students

Videos can be used as didactic tools for self-learning under several circumstances, including those cases in which students are responsible for the development of this resource as an audiovisual notebook. We compared students' and teachers' perceptions regarding the main features that an audiovisual notebook should include. Four questionnaires with items about information, images, text and music, and filmmaking were used to investigate students' (n¿=¿115) and teachers' perceptions (n¿=¿28) regarding the development of a video focused on a histological technique. The results show that both students and teachers significantly prioritize informative components, images and filmmaking more than text and music. The scores were significantly higher for teachers than for students for all four components analyzed. The highest scores were given to items related to practical and medically oriented elements, and the lowest values were given to theoretical and complementary elements. For most items, there were no differences between genders. A strong positive correlation was found between the scores given to each item by teachers and students. These results show that both students' and teachers' perceptions tend to coincide for most items, and suggest that audiovisual notebooks developed by students would emphasize the same items as those perceived by teachers to be the most relevant. Further, these findings suggest that the use of video as an audiovisual learning notebook would not only preserve the curricular objectives but would also offer the advantages of self-learning processes.Postprint (author's final draft

Amino acid-metal phosphate hybrid nanoflowers (AaHNFs): their preparation, characterization and anti-oxidant capacities

Reactive oxygen species like hydrogen peroxide have positive roles in vivo systems such as phagocytosis, intercellular signal transfer, regulation of cell growth, and the synthesis of important biological compounds. Nanostructures can exhibit increased redox and radical scavenging activities compared to the free form with peroxidase-like activities. This work presents the synthesis and characterization of amino acid-metal phosphate hybrid nanoflowers (AaHNFs) and their potential as a radical scavenger and anti-oxidant. The AaHNFs were synthesized using some metal ions (Cu2+, Mn2+, Ni2+, Co2+, and Zn2+) and selected amino acids (His, Cys, Asn, and Asp) which contain an imidazole ring, sulfhydryl, carboxamide, and carboxylate groups. Synthesized AaHNFs were characterized by their morphology and chemical point of view by using different techniques such as SEM, EDX, FTIR and XRD. Their peroxidase like activities were determined. Using the principle of Fenton's reaction, AaHNFs were found to be exhibitinga more effective peroxidase-like activity than free amino acids. We applied different analytical measurement methods such as hydrogen peroxide scavenging activity assay of AaHNFs and the assays of DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities to determine the anti-oxidant capacities of AaHNFs. AaHNFs can be evaluated as an effective anti-oxidant scavenger material due to their superior properties. This new type of HNFs can be exploited as a natural anti-oxidant in various potential applications related to fields such as biosensing, bioassay, biomedicine, pharmaceutics and biocatalysis
