Entre religiões e negócios, a sobrevivência

When king Manuel I proclaimed the religious unity, defining Roman Catholicism as the only religion allowed in Portugal and imposing that Jews and Moors should be baptized or leave the kingdom, he was far from imagining that his religious politic would be unsuccessful in many cases. In spite having been baptized and attending church services, many of these former Jews and former Moors still maintained their ancestral faith inside their homes or in their own conscience Praying to the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob or invoking Allah, the neophytes claimed to be the “Other” in the Portuguese society and preserved their traditions and ancient faith. Freedom was obtained by fleeing to other regions, inside Europe or north Africa and Turk empire. Business and trade provided for this exit and religious freedom was found in Italian Cities, in the Turkish Empire or in Morocco. Living between two religions, and seeking for the true God and the salvation of the soul, the «cristãos‑novos» were divided between «being» and «not being». Departures and arrivals were nurtured by the assumption of an identity simultaneously wanted and feared.Quando D. Manuel decretou a unidade religiosa, definindo a religião cristã católica como a única permitida em Portugal e obrigou os Judeus e os Mouros a receberem o baptismo ou estes últimos a abandonarem o reino, estava longe de supor que a sua política religiosa seria em muitos casos um insucesso. Embora baptizados e frequentando a igreja muitos destes ex‑Judeus e ex‑Mouros permaneciam no interior dos seus lares, outros na sua consciência, na sua fé ancestral Orando ao Deus de Abraão, de Isaac e de Jacob ou invocando Alá, os neófitos afirmavam‑se o “outro” na sociedade portuguesa e mantinham vivas as tradições da sua fé. A liberdade era alcançada pela fuga para outras paragens, a Europa ou o norte de África. Os negócios permitiam a saída e a liberdade religiosa era encontrada nas cidades italianas, no império turco ou em Marrocos. Entre duas religiões, em busca do Deus verdadeiro e da salvação da alma, os cristãos‑novos viviam divididos entre o “ser” e o “não ser”. Los judíos de la Beira Interior: la aljama de Trancoso y la entrada de la Inquisición

The article analyzes the Jewish presence in the Portuguese region of the Beira interior from its origins until present times, where some traditions and memories regarding the Belmonte community have been preserved. It focuses on the Jewish medieval community of Trancoso, one of the most relevant in the region, analyzing its origins in an Iberian context, the biography of some of its members and its importance in the regional economic development. Finally, the irruption of the Inquisition are and its dramatic consequences is considered.Este artículo analiza la presencia judía en la región portuguesa rayana de la Beira interior, desde sus orígenes hasta el presente, en que han permanecido ciertas tradiciones y memorias en torno a la comunidad de Belmonte. Especial atención se dedica a la aljama medieval de Trancoso, una de las más importantes de esta región, a través de un enfoque diacrónico, que repasa sus inicios en un contexto ibérico, la biografía de alguno de sus componentes y su importancia en el desarrollo económico regional, sin olvidar el trauma que supuso la irrupción de la Inquisición, con la prisión y fuga de conversos a otras ciudades del reino y hacia la vecina Castilla
