    Background: Vaginal burns resulting from alkaline batteries are a rare and potential serious complication which require a prompt intervention. Case: A 7-year-old girl presented to the emergency department with lower abdominal pain, dysuria and brownish vaginal discharge. Clinical history suggested a foreign body. Abdominal radiography showed two alkaline batteries inside the vagina that were removed. Vaginoscopy revealed severe vaginal burns with necrosis of a large area of posterior cul de sac. Two months after the girl was asymptomatic. Discussion: Vaginal foreign bodies should be considered in pre-pubertal girls presenting with vaginal bleeding.     InfectionCMA: A Cell MicroArray Approach for Efficient Biomarker Screening in In Vitro Infection Assays

    The recently emerged severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has forced the scientific community to acquire knowledge in real-time, when total lockdowns and the interruption of flights severely limited access to reagents as the global pandemic became established. This unique reality made researchers aware of the importance of designing efficient in vitro set-ups to evaluate infectious kinetics. Here, we propose a histology-based method to evaluate infection kinetics grounded in cell microarray (CMA) construction, immunocytochemistry and in situ hybridization techniques. We demonstrate that the chip-like organization of the InfectionCMA has several advantages, allowing side-by-side comparisons between diverse cell lines, infection time points, and biomarker expression and cytolocalization evaluation in the same slide. In addition, this methodology has the potential to be easily adapted for drug screening. © 2022 by the authors.     On the Proton Conductivity of Nafion-Faujasite Composite Membranes for Low Temperature Direct Methanol Fuel Cells.

    Although zeolites are introduced to decrease methanol crossover of Nafion membranes for direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs), little is known about the effect of their intrinsic properties and the interaction with the ionomer. In this work, Nafion-Faujasite composite membranes prepared by solution casting were characterized by extensive physicochemical and electrochemical techniques. Faujasite was found to undergo severe dealumination during the membrane activation, but its structure remained intact. The zeolite interacts with Nafion probably through hydrogen bonding between Si-OH and SO3H groups, which combined with the increase of the water uptake and the water mobility, and the addition of a less conductive phase (the zeolite) leads to an optimum proton conductivity between 0.98 and 2 wt% of zeolite. Hot pressing the membranes before their assembling with the electrodes enhanced the DMFC performance by reducing the methanol crossover and the serial resistance

    Diálogo com a Cultura Surda e a Inclusão no Ensino Superior: availação e proposição

    Resumo: este artigo analisa a inclusão no ensino superior de alunos com surdez através do acompanhamento do acesso e do desempenho escolar de três alunos do curso de Pedagogia da UERN. Tomamos como premissa teórica o campo da educação popular, em sua prática dialógica, na qual percebe-se a educação como direitos de todos e só realizável numa educação que possibilite a construção de saberes significativos aos aprendentes. No caminho, historiamos a forma de acesso à universidade, fizemos a leitura crítica do edital do processo seletivo e buscamos entender o cotidiano escolar dos alunos surdos e as adaptações do curso para atender suas especificidades. Essas análises foram baseadas na aplicação de questionários estruturados, abertos e fechados. Consideramos a necessidade de continuarmos construindo espaços de inclusão e de dialogicidade, seguidos cotidianamente, não aceitando o acesso como referência única e percebendo que ainda estamos longe de atingirmos o â??â??fazer parteâ??â?? cidadão, como defendeu Paulo Freire.     Gloeothece sp.—exploiting a new source of antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antitumor agents

    Bioactive lipidic compounds of microalgae, such as polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) and carotenoids, can avoid or treat oxidation-associated conditions and diseases like inflammation or cancer. This study aimed to assess the bioactive potential of lipidic extracts obtained from Gloeothece sp.–using Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) solvents like ethanol, acetone, hexane:isopropanol (3:2) (HI) and ethyl lactate. The bioactive potential of extracts was assessed in terms of antioxidant (ABTS•+, DPPH•,• NO and O2• assays), anti-inflammatory (HRBC membrane stabilization and Cox-2 screening assay), and antitumor capacity (death by TUNEL, and anti-proliferative by BrdU incorporation assay in AGS cancer cells); while its composition was characterized in terms of carotenoids and fatty acids, by HPLC-DAD and GC-FID methods, respectively. Results revealed a chemopreventive potential of the HI extract owing to its ability to: (I) scavenge- NO• radical (IC50, 1258 ± 0.353 µg·mL-1 ); (II) inhibit 50% of COX-2 expression at 130.2 ± 7.4 µg·mL-1; (III) protect 61.6 ± 9.2% of lysosomes from heat damage, and (IV) induce AGS cell death by 4.2-fold and avoid its proliferation up to 40% in a concentration of 23.2 ± 1.9 µg·mL-1 .     Non-AIDS-related comorbidities in people living with HIV-1 aged 50 years and older: The AGING POSITIVE study.

    OBJECTIVE: To characterize the profile of non-AIDS-related comorbidities (NARC) in the older HIV-1-infected population and to explore the factors associated with multiple NARC. METHODS: This was a multicentre, cross-sectional study including HIV-1-infected patients aged ≥50 years, who were virologically suppressed and had been on a stable antiretroviral therapy (ART) regimen for at least 6 months. A multiple regression model explored the association between demographic and clinical variables and the number of NARC. RESULTS: Overall, 401 patients were enrolled. The mean age of the patients was 59.3 years and 72.6% were male. The mean duration of HIV-1 infection was 12.0 years and the median exposure to ART was 10.0 years. The mean number of NARC was 2.1, and 34.7% of patients had three or more NARC. Hypercholesterolemia was the most frequent NARC (60.8%), followed by arterial hypertension (39.7%) and chronic depression/anxiety (23.9%). Arterial hypertension and diabetes mellitus were the most frequently treated NARC (95.6% and 92.6% of cases, respectively). The linear regression analysis showed a positive relationship between age and NARC (B=0.032, 95% confidence interval 0.015-0.049; p=0.0003) and between the duration of HIV-1 infection and NARC (B=0.039, 95% confidence interval 0.017-0.059; p=0.0005). CONCLUSIONS: A high prevalence of NARC was found, the most common being metabolic, cardiovascular, and psychological conditions. NARC rates were similar to those reported for the general population, suggesting a larger societal problem beyond HIV infection. A multidisciplinary approach is essential to reduce the burden of complex multi-morbid conditions in the HIV-1-infected population.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Targeted Next-Generation Sequencing Study in Familial ALS-FTD Portuguese Patients Negative for C9orf72 HRE

    Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative disease with clinical and etiological heterogeneity and a complex genetic contribution. Clinical, neuropathological, and genetic evidence revealed that ALS and frontotemporal dementia (FTD) are in part of a single disease continuum. Genetic causes have been identified in sporadic (SALS) and familial patients (FALS) and the recurrent genetic factor underlying ALS and FTD is the C9orf72 hexanucleotide repeat expansion (HRE). However, in our population, the concomitance of ALS and FTD cannot be explained by C9orf72 HRE in many FALS and SALS cases. Our aim is to further understand the genetic basis of ALS in Portuguese patients. 34 patients with FALS or SALS-FTD, negative for C9orf72 HRE, were screened for rare variants in a panel of 29 relevant genes by next-generation sequencing. We detected 15 variants in 11 genes, one classified as pathogenic in TARDBP, two as likely pathogenic in TARDBP and PRPH, and the others as variants of unknown significance (VUS). Gene variants, including VUS, were found in 41.2% FALS patients and 40% SALS-FTD. In most patients, no potential pathogenic variants were found.
