New insights on the self-organization of PEG/alpha-cyclodextrin- based Polyrotaxanes in solution: an experimental and theoretical study

    Get PDF
Size exclusion chromatography coupled with light scattering (SEC/MALS), dynamic light scattering (DLS), steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence, as well as molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are used to study the behavior of several poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)/α-cyclodextrins (αCDs) polyrotaxanes (PRs) in solution. The number of CD units in any of the PRs studied is always smaller than that required to saturate the PEG chains. These PRs seem to aggregate in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) solution. The presence of hairpins in the non-saturated PRs contributes to diminishing their expected large dimensions. Intra- and intermolecular interactions and forces responsible for hairpins and aggregation are investigated. This work was supported by the University of Alcalá (GC2011–002 and UAH2011/EXP-036) and Nanomod (MAT2010–17091) from the Spanish Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación. The present research is focused in the approach of a proposal for the optimization of the supply process of personal protective equipment (PPE), required by the Service area of the company NEWM S.A. in order to provide preventive maintenance services for its clients in the mining sector. Due to the high safety standards and regulations required in the mining sector, PPE are considered critical products, which lack of availability leads to the non-performance of services. It implies negative impacts for the company, related to the decrease in sales (due to penalties) and the increase in transportation costs, since it is necessary to program additional forwardings to the work points. On the other hand, the use of PPE ensures that the services are carried out safely, in order to safeguard the integrity of the technical staff, which is the main asset of the company. Regarding methodology, the information about supply process was collected making interviews with the responsible of Purchasing, Services and Warehouse processes, and making the analysis of the current process flow. By applying the Theory of 5 Zeros and Ishikawa Diagram tools, the main causes that generate the lack of availability of PPE were detected, and an improvement proposal was raised according to the needs of the company, based on the processes ordering and the application of technology to achieve operational efficiency.Trabajo de investigació

In a contextof internal warfare of more than fifty years in Colombia and with a signed peace process that seeks to end part of the conflict, forgiveness is spoken of daily, a fundamental term for the solution of conflicts. However, due to political-historical situations and the misinformation that has existed, this word has acquired multiple meanings. The present article pretends to show what are the social representations that the university students of Bucaramanga have in front of the word "forgiveness" in the context of the conflict and the Colombian post-conflict. A qualitative methodology linked to the grounded theory was implemented and different qualitative data collection techniques were used. Based on the general and emerging categories, an analysis of the speeches issued by students from two universities, one public and one private, was made. Here, it was evidenced that forgiveness is constantly related as a significant and necessary entity for the termination of a conflict. . In conclusion, the conception of forgiveness is directly related to forgetting, so it becomes an important factor in the construction of peace, a premise that becomes relevant because of the implications of having to forgive for societ

The goal of this paper is to present the data from the first annual report and to compare them with autonomic registries and recent prospective multi-centric studies performed in Spain. METHODS: We included persons 75 years or older treated for fragility hip fractures in any of the centers participating in the RNFC between January and October 2017. The descriptive statistics of each variable used the mean (and standard deviation) or the median (and interquartile ranges) for the ordinal variables and the percentage for the categoric variables. A descriptive analysis of the casemix was performed and compared with available data from the aforementioned studies. RESULTS: The RNFC included 7.208 patients from 54 hospitals, with a mean age of 86.7 (SD 5.6) years; 75.4% were women, and 36.4% showed cognitive decline. Mean surgical delay was 75.7 (SD 63.6) hours, and length of stay averaged 10.9 (SD 6.7) days. Of the patients who lived at home (75.4%), less than half (37.0%) returned home at discharge. One-month mortality was 7.1%. Comparison with other studies showed important differences, especially regarding patients newly sent to nursing homes (7.7-29.4%) and with antiosteoporotic treatment at discharge (14.5-36.7%). CONCLUSIONS: The RNFC is the largest prospective database to date that offers data regarding the characteristics of patients hospitalized for hip fractures in Spain. Comparison with recent studies showed some important differences

ObjectivesCARB-ES-19 is a comprehensive, multicenter, nationwide study integrating whole-genome sequencing (WGS) in the surveillance of carbapenemase-producing K. pneumoniae (CP-Kpn) and E. coli (CP-Eco) to determine their incidence, geographical distribution, phylogeny, and resistance mechanisms in Spain.MethodsIn total, 71 hospitals, representing all 50 Spanish provinces, collected the first 10 isolates per hospital (February to May 2019); CPE isolates were first identified according to EUCAST (meropenem MIC > 0.12 mg/L with immunochromatography, colorimetric tests, carbapenem inactivation, or carbapenem hydrolysis with MALDI-TOF). Prevalence and incidence were calculated according to population denominators. Antibiotic susceptibility testing was performed using the microdilution method (EUCAST). All 403 isolates collected were sequenced for high-resolution single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) typing, core genome multilocus sequence typing (cgMLST), and resistome analysis.ResultsIn total, 377 (93.5%) CP-Kpn and 26 (6.5%) CP-Eco isolates were collected from 62 (87.3%) hospitals in 46 (92%) provinces. CP-Kpn was more prevalent in the blood (5.8%, 50/853) than in the urine (1.4%, 201/14,464). The cumulative incidence for both CP-Kpn and CP-Eco was 0.05 per 100 admitted patients. The main carbapenemase genes identified in CP-Kpn were blaOXA–48 (263/377), blaKPC–3 (62/377), blaVIM–1 (28/377), and blaNDM–1 (12/377). All isolates were susceptible to at least two antibiotics. Interregional dissemination of eight high-risk CP-Kpn clones was detected, mainly ST307/OXA-48 (16.4%), ST11/OXA-48 (16.4%), and ST512-ST258/KPC (13.8%). ST512/KPC and ST15/OXA-48 were the most frequent bacteremia-causative clones. The average number of acquired resistance genes was higher in CP-Kpn (7.9) than in CP-Eco (5.5).ConclusionThis study serves as a first step toward WGS integration in the surveillance of carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales in Spain. We detected important epidemiological changes, including increased CP-Kpn and CP-Eco prevalence and incidence compared to previous studies, wide interregional dissemination, and increased dissemination of high-risk clones, such as ST307/OXA-48 and ST512/KPC-3
