Abstract Based-off the regional development theory developed from knowledge and innovation, Huggins & Thompson [1] have proposed the concept of Network Capital, which aims to explain the importance of knowledge flow, knowledge absorptive capacity and investments on associations between firms and Universities or Scientific Centers or other firms in order to increase regional development. This paper used empirical data from Mexico for the period 2012–2016 to propose an alternative to the calculation of Network Capital at State level as an alternative to the Huggins and Thompson proposal. The data used cover all the 32 Mexican States about innovation activities. On this paper is shown the deep differences between Mexican States about the knowledge qualities, the absorptive capacity of knowledge and the investments on strategic associations, it that might be typical at non-innovation Nations. Although the proposal on this paper cannot be directly compared to that of Huggins and Thompson, both shows evidence that, the greater network capital, the greater the potential development based on knowledge

The implantation of new technologies in television has supposed the greater use of audiovisual documentary information thanks to a remarkable increase in the accessibility of archived content. But the implantation of video servers and the digitalization of archives have caused, at the same time, an increase in the work and responsibility of professionals or documentalists. Documentary logic is also changing as a result of the appearance of «documentary contents» and «files» that move old documents and registers. These changes are important, although it seems that this technological revolution does not ultimately solve the problem of the audio-visual legacy that will be inherited in future times

Evaluation of CNN architectures for gait recognition based on optical flow maps

This work targets people identification in video based on the way they walk (\ie gait) by using deep learning architectures. We explore the use of convolutional neural networks (CNN) for learning high-level descriptors from low-level motion features (\ie optical flow components). The low number of training samples for each subject and the use of a test set containing subjects different from the training ones makes the search of a good CNN architecture a challenging task.Universidad de Málaga. Natural selection on plant resistance to herbivores in the native and introduced range

. When plants are introduced into new regions, the absence of their co-evolved natural enemies can result in lower levels of attack. As a consequence of this reduction in enemy pressure, plant performance may increase and selection for resistance to enemies may decrease. In the present study, we compared leaf damage, plant size and leaf trichome density, as well as the direction and magnitude of selection on resistance and plant size between non-native (Spain) and native (Mexico) populations of Datura stramonium. This species was introduced to Spain about five centuries ago and constitutes an ideal system to test four predictions of the enemy release hypothesis. Compared with native populations, we expected Spanish populations of D. stramonium to have (i) lower levels of foliar damage; (ii) larger plant size; (iii) lower leaf trichome density that is unrelated to foliar damage by herbivores; and (iv) weak or no selection on resistance to herbivores but strong selection on plant size. Our results showed that, on average, plants from non-native populations were significantly less damaged by herbivores, were less pubescent and were larger than those from native populations. We also detected different selection regimes on resistance and plant size between the non-native and native ranges. Positive selection on plant size was detected in both ranges (though it was higher in the non-native area), but consistent positive selection on relative resistance was detected only in the native range. Overall, we suggest that changes in selection pressure on resistance and plant size in D. stramonium in Spain are a consequence of ‘release from natural enemies’

This research describes the microscopic morphology of Nostoc sp., from Pintag (Pichincha), in relation to weather variables from May to September 2015. The features evaluated from the samples were: diameter of cells (µm), heterocyst diameter (µm), mucilage area (µm²), filament length (µm) and heterocyst number in relation to one hundred vegetative cells. Fifteen samples were analyzed using as reference the temperature, precipitation, relative humidity and solar radiation. Each sample was hydrated and settled on plates with methylene blue to be observed with a microscopy. In the data analysis, according to Pearson correlations, the heterocyst number, filament length and mucilage area do not present any correlation with the weather variables studied. Vegetative cells diameter, displayed correlation with the solar radiation (r = 0.95 / p= 0.01) but does not present any kind of correlation with the other weather variables (p>0.05). The heterocyst diameter indicated that solar radiation is correlated (r = 0.93 / p=0.019), the same for the relative humidity (r = -0,89 / p=0.04), but the temperature and precipitation (p>0.05) do not present correlation. Multiple lineal regression shows correlation between heterocyst number vs. temperature, solar radiation and precipitation, showing that morphological variables depend on the surrounding weather conditions.
