    Generating-function approach for bond percolations in hierarchical networks

    We study bond percolations on hierarchical scale-free networks with the open bond probability of the shortcuts p~\tilde{p} and that of the ordinary bonds pp. The system has a critical phase in which the percolating probability PP takes an intermediate value 0<P<10<P<1. Using generating function approach, we calculate the fractal exponent ψ\psi of the root clusters to show that ψ\psi varies continuously with p~\tilde{p} in the critical phase. We confirm numerically that the distribution nsn_s of cluster size ss in the critical phase obeys a power law nssτn_s \propto s^{-\tau}, where τ\tau satisfies the scaling relation τ=1+ψ1\tau=1+\psi^{-1}. In addition the critical exponent β(p~)\beta(\tilde{p}) of the order parameter varies as p~\tilde{p}, from β0.164694\beta\simeq 0.164694 at p~=0\tilde{p}=0 to infinity at p~=p~c=5/32\tilde{p}=\tilde{p}_c=5/32.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figure

    Alleviation of Brain Hypoperfusion after Preventative Treatment with Lomerizine in an Elderly Migraineur with Aura

    Previous studies of brain single-photon emission tomography (SPECT) showed changes of regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) in migraineurs during prodromes or headache attacks. Little is known about how successful medication of migraine prevention can reflect rCBF in migraineurs. We highlighted alternation of brain SPECT findings in a migraineur with aura before and after prophylactic treatment with lomerizine, a calcium channel blocker. A 70-year-old man with migraine developed visual disturbance frequently at walking exercise for the recent 3 months. After this visual attack, a mild-degree of throbbing headache occured occasionally. Brain SPECT using 99mTc-ethyl cysteinate dimer was performed at interictal time of migraine. Brain SPECT before lomerizine treatment revealed hypoperfusion in the frontal, parietal, and occipital regions. He was diagnosed with recurrence of migraine with aura (MA). Lomerizine (10 mg/day, po) was administered for 3 months. MA and visual aura without headache were dramatically improved. Migraine attacks and visual disturbance were not induced at exercise. At 3 months after lomerizine medication, brain SPECT showed remarkable increase of rCBF. These SPECT changes of our patient indicated that antimigraine mechanism of lomerizine could contribute to restoration of cerebral hypoperfusion

    RiceXPro: a platform for monitoring gene expression in japonica rice grown under natural field conditions

    Elucidating the function of all predicted genes in rice remains as the ultimate goal in cereal genomics in order to ensure the development of improved varieties that will sustain an expanding world population. We constructed a gene expression database (RiceXPro, URL: http://ricexpro.dna.affrc.go.jp/) to provide an overview of the transcriptional changes throughout the growth of the rice plant in the field. RiceXPro contains two data sets corresponding to spatiotemporal gene expression profiles of various organs and tissues, and continuous gene expression profiles of leaf from transplanting to harvesting. A user-friendly web interface enables the extraction of specific gene expression profiles by keyword and chromosome search, and basic data analysis, thereby providing useful information as to the organ/tissue and developmental stage specificity of expression of a particular gene. Analysis tools such as t-test, calculation of fold change and degree of correlation facilitate the comparison of expression profiles between two random samples and the prediction of function of uncharacterized genes. As a repository of expression data encompassing growth in the field, this database can provide baseline information of genes that underlie various agronomically important traits in rice

    Inflammatory bowel disease in Tokushima prefecture : A report of questionnaire investigation

    To investigate the number of cases and clinical features of inflammatory bowel disease, a questionnaire was sent to 1,271 hospitals or clinics in Tokushima prefecture. A total of 320 cases were collected from 60 institutes for the period from January to December 1997. Eight cases were excluded from this study because of duplicated report (6 cases) and inadequate diagnosis (2 cases). Finally, 312 cases were investigated on their clinical features, treatments, complications, and prognosis. The cases included 195 ulcerative colitis (male 106, female 83, gender unknown 6 cases, age ranged 9-81, mean 39.5± 14.3 (standard deviation (SD) years old), 69 Crohn's disease (male 39, female 24, gender unknown 6 cases, age ranged 17-87, mean 35.1±10.5 (SD) years old), 28 ischemic colitis (male 11, female 17, mean age 65.9±12.6 (SD) years old), 9 intestinal tuberculosis (male 1, female 6, gender unknown 2, age 66.9±6.1 (SD) years old), 4 intestinal Behcet (male 3, female 1, age 39.0±14.2 (SD) years old), 6 simple ulcers (male 3, female 3, age 67.7±11.8 (SD) years old), and a case of aphtous enteritis. Two toxic megacolon cases and 5 colorectal cancer cases were reported among the 195 ulcerative colitis patients. 44 cases out of 69 Crohn's disease patients were received surgical treatment because of severe complications including perforation (12 cases), stenosis (10 cases), internal fistula formation (8 cases) and so on. However, no case died because of the diseases except 3 untraceable patients

    Protein Aggregation and Protein Instability Govern Familial Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Patient Survival

    The nature of the “toxic gain of function” that results from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)-, Parkinson-, and Alzheimer-related mutations is a matter of debate. As a result no adequate model of any neurodegenerative disease etiology exists. We demonstrate that two synergistic properties, namely, increased protein aggregation propensity (increased likelihood that an unfolded protein will aggregate) and decreased protein stability (increased likelihood that a protein will unfold), are central to ALS etiology. Taken together these properties account for 69% of the variability in mutant Cu/Zn-superoxide-dismutase-linked familial ALS patient survival times. Aggregation is a concentration-dependent process, and spinal cord motor neurons have higher concentrations of Cu/Zn-superoxide dismutase than the surrounding cells. Protein aggregation therefore is expected to contribute to the selective vulnerability of motor neurons in familial ALS
