    On ratio and product methods with certain known population parameters of auxiliary variable in sample surveys

    This paper proposes two ratio and product-type estimators using transformation based on known minimum and maximum values of auxiliary variable. The biases and mean squared errors of the suggested estimators are obtained under large sample approximation. Conditions are obtained under which the suggested estimators are superior to the conventional unbiased estimator, usual ratio and product estimators of population mean. The superiority of the proposed estimators are also established through some natural population data sets

    Aims: Energy-based devices using radiofrequency and laser technologies have gained popularity as therapies for vaginal atrophy, urinary incontinence, and vaginal prolapse. They have been promoted by cosmetic and aesthetic industries for vaginal "laxity" and vaginal "rejuvenation," both of which are undefined conditions and terms. This article aims to review the current available literature and its quality on this emerging technology. Methods: An international panel of gynaecologists, urogynaecologists, and urologists undertook a review of the available published literature, identifying articles, guidance, and society statements on the use vaginal energy-based devices. Results: There is currently no formal guidance for the use of vaginal energy based therapies. No randomized controlled trials have been published. No comparative studies to existing treatment has been carried out. Studies suggest that vaginal laser can be used in the treatment of vaginal prolapse or "vaginal laxity" and stress urinary incontinence with no quality evidence supporting the use of the therapy for vaginal atrophy or lichen sclerosis. Conclusions: This international group propose that whilst there remains a paucity of good quality data describing the safety, benefits, and appropriate use of vaginal radiofrequency or laser treatments in gynaecology and urogynaecology, a consensus best practice document by an established scientific community needs to be developed.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Diagnostic accuracy of fine needle aspiration cytology in soft tissue tumors: our institutional experience

    Background: Diagnosis of Soft tissue tumors by FNAC (Fine needle aspiration cytology) is one of the diagnostic modality of choice in pathological evaluation of soft tissue neoplasms especially to differentiate from the non-neoplastic soft tissue lesions. It is challenging and controversial. Very few centers rely on simple FNAC for diagnosis which is largely due to a lack of experience, familiarity, confidence and tricky cytological features.Methods:We have studied 140 cases of soft-tissue tumors by simple FNAC procedure done by cytopathologist from 01/01/2012 to 31/12/2012. After considering thorough history, clinical, radiology and other findings all cases were reported by the experienced faculty in cytopathology section of our institute.Results:Out of total 140 cases of soft tissue tumors 131 (93.58%) were benign and 9 (6.42%) were malignant. In benign category maximum numbers were lipoma 105 cases (80.15%) followed by benign neural tumors 5 cases (3.82%), ganglion 4 cases (3.05%), benign fibrohistiocytic lesions 2 cases (1.53%) and others. Conclusions: Current study demonstrates that FNAC is valuable as a primary tool in diagnosing soft tissue tumors specifically benign lesions like lipomatous tumors, high grade malignant sarcoma and recurrent lesions.     The well-described flame demonstration illustrates different aspects of energy, electronic transition, atomic structure, and the electromagnetic spectrum. Burning salts dissolved in a solvent produces visually appealing and vividly colored flames but many incidents have been reported from improper use of solvents and further use of this method has been strongly discouraged. Although alternative approaches have been developed to address some of the safety concerns, they do not match the convenience of use and vibrant colors produced using this new method. Presented, is a new approach on the standard flame demonstration that mitigates all concern regarding solvent use and restores the convenient aspects and brilliance of color of the traditional flame demonstration without compromising safety

    Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli O157∶H7 Gene Expression Profiling in Response to Growth in the Presence of Host Epithelia

    BACKGROUND: The pathogenesis of enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) O157:H7 infection is attributed to virulence factors encoded on multiple pathogenicity islands. Previous studies have shown that EHEC O157:H7 modulates host cell signal transduction cascades, independent of toxins and rearrangement of the cytoskeleton. However, the virulence factors and mechanisms responsible for EHEC-mediated subversion of signal transduction remain to be determined. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to first identify differentially regulated genes in response to EHEC O157:H7 grown in the presence of epithelial cells, compared to growth in the absence of epithelial cells (that is, growth in minimal essential tissue culture medium alone, minimal essential tissue culture medium in the presence of 5% CO(2), and Penassay broth alone) and, second, to identify EHEC virulence factors responsible for pathogen modulation of host cell signal transduction. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Overnight cultures of EHEC O157:H7 were incubated for 6 hr at 37 degrees C in the presence or absence of confluent epithelial (HEp-2) cells. Total RNA was then extracted and used for microarray analyses (Affymetrix E. coli Genome 2.0 gene chips). Relative to bacteria grown in each of the other conditions, EHEC O157:H7 cultured in the presence of cultured epithelial cells displayed a distinct gene-expression profile. A 2.0-fold increase in the expression of 71 genes and a 2.0-fold decrease in expression of 60 other genes were identified in EHEC O157:H7 grown in the presence of epithelial cells, compared to bacteria grown in media alone. CONCLUSION/SIGNIFICANCE: Microarray analyses and gene deletion identified a protease on O-island 50, gene Z1787, as a potential virulence factor responsible for mediating EHEC inhibition of the interferon (IFN)-gamma-Jak1,2-STAT-1 signal transduction cascade. Up-regulated genes provide novel targets for use in developing strategies to interrupt the infectious process

    Elevation of intracellular Ca 2+ concentration induces the synthesis of N0 arachydonoylethanolamine (anandamide) in a sub0popu lation of primary sensory neurons. N0acylphosphatidylethanolamine phospholipa se D (NAPE0PLD) is the only known enzyme, which synthesises anandamide in a Ca 2+ 0dependent manner. NAPE0 PLD mRNA, as well as anandamide's main targets, the excitatory transient receptor potential vanilloid type 1 ion channel (TRPV1) and the inhibitory cannabinoid type 1 (CB1) receptor and the main anandamide0hydrolysing enzyme fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH) are all expressed by sub0populatio ns of nociceptive primary sensory neurons. Thus, NAPE0PLD, TRPV1, the CB1 rec eptor and FAAH could form an autocrine signalling system, which could shape t he activity of a major sub0 population of nociceptive primary sensory neurons, hence contribute to the development of pain. While the expression patterns of TRPV1, the CB1 receptor and FAAH have been comprehensively elucidated, little i s known about NAPE0PLD expression in primary sensory neurons under physiol ogical and pathological conditions. We report that NAPE0PLD is expressed by about a third of primary sensory neurons, the overwhelming majority of which also express nociceptive markers as well as the CB1 receptor, TRPV1 and FAAH . Inflammation of peripheral tissues and injury to peripheral nerves induce diff ering but concerted changes in the expression pattern of NAPE0PLD, the CB1 receptor, T RPV1 and FAAH. Together these data indicate the existence of the anatomical basis for an autocrine signalling system, in a major proportion of nociceptive primar y sensory neurons, and that alterations in that autocrine signalling by periphe ral pathologies could contribute to the development of both inflammatory and neuropathi c pain
