Efficient wavelength conversion and net parametric gain via four wave mixing in a high index doped silica waveguide

We demonstrate sub-picosecond wavelength conversion in the C-band via four wave mixing in a 45cm long high index doped silica spiral waveguide. We achieve an on/off conversion efficiency (signal to idler) of + 16.5dB as well as a parametric gain of + 15dB for a peak pump power of 38W over a wavelength range of 100nm. Furthermore, we demonstrated a minimum gain of + 5dB over a wavelength range as large as 200nm

Surface plasmons at the interface between graphene and kerr-type nonlinear medium

The properties of surface plasmons localized at the interface between graphene and kerr-type nonlinear medium in three dimensions are investigated. Compared with surface plasmons at the surface of metal, with the inevitable nonlinear refractive effect, the confinement of plasmon can be improved to three times than graphene plasmons without nonlinear contribution, but also with almost the same relative propagation length. Moreover, the dispersion relation and propation distance of graphene plasmons can be easily controlled by changing the fermi energy, temperature and relaxation time of graphene. Our results suggest a simple but useful potential application for precise nonlinear material sensor using graphene plasmons.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

    Chalcogenide Glass-on-Graphene Photonics

Two-dimensional (2-D) materials are of tremendous interest to integrated photonics given their singular optical characteristics spanning light emission, modulation, saturable absorption, and nonlinear optics. To harness their optical properties, these atomically thin materials are usually attached onto prefabricated devices via a transfer process. In this paper, we present a new route for 2-D material integration with planar photonics. Central to this approach is the use of chalcogenide glass, a multifunctional material which can be directly deposited and patterned on a wide variety of 2-D materials and can simultaneously function as the light guiding medium, a gate dielectric, and a passivation layer for 2-D materials. Besides claiming improved fabrication yield and throughput compared to the traditional transfer process, our technique also enables unconventional multilayer device geometries optimally designed for enhancing light-matter interactions in the 2-D layers. Capitalizing on this facile integration method, we demonstrate a series of high-performance glass-on-graphene devices including ultra-broadband on-chip polarizers, energy-efficient thermo-optic switches, as well as graphene-based mid-infrared (mid-IR) waveguide-integrated photodetectors and modulators

A full vectorial model for pulse propagation in emerging waveguides with subwavelength structures part II: Stimulated Raman Scattering

    Get PDF
The significance of full vectorial pulse propagation through emerging waveguides has not been investigated. Here we report the development of a generalised vectorial model of nonlinear pulse propagation due to the effects of Stimulated Raman Scattering (SRS) in optical waveguides. Unlike standard models, this model does not use the weak guidance approximation, and thus accurately models the modal Raman gain of optical waveguides in the strong guidance regime. Here we develop a vectorial-based nonlinear Schrödinger Eq. (VNSE) to demonstrate how the standard model fails in certain regimes, with up to factors of 2.5 enhancement in Raman gain between the VNSE and the standard model. Using the VNSE we are able to explore opportunities for tailoring of the modal Raman gain spectrum to achieve effects such as gain flattening through design of the optical fiber.Mark D.
