Roads "drawn" to modernity: Religion and secularism in contemporary Turkey

    Get PDF
Editorial cartoons do not just mirror politics, but are also themselves a part of politics. They are more than single-panel graphical commentaries on daily policies, for they construct their own claims on truth. The cartoonist can use the polysemic nature of visual signs and present a distinct framing perspective. Editorial cartoonists with certain ideological stances can become an actor in "the struggle for cultural supremacy," in Tarrow's (1998) term. This struggle refers to efforts by the state, media, and social movements to influence the interpretative processes by which individuals negotiate the meaning of events. This paper analyzes the editorial cartoons in Turkish daily newspapers in terms of their competing framings of contemporary Turkey's secularist-Islamist division. Secularism and Islamism refer here to political projects that seek to transform and reinstitute a sociopolitical order on the basis of some constitutive norms (Çinar 2005, 8-9)

In the latest technology era, the widespread usage of internet enabled individuals tointeract continuously and led to altered buying behavior patterns. Literature focuses onthe critical effects in the field. Among many antecedents to online shopping, previousstudies point out two important obstacles: (i) acceptance and tendency to usetechnology in accordance with gender perceptions and (ii) internet security problems. This study analyzes the impact of these two prominent factors on e-commerce utilizationby studying the effects of these factors through primary and secondary data; a surveydesigned specifically for this analysis and the cross-country data from Eurostat. Thefindings show that while internet security problems significantly impact online shoppingbehavior, the evidence is mixed for the impact of gender. The results of this paperprovide insights for a successful e-commerce transaction and identify importantobstacles to be avoided for an efficient e-commerce system.

Medial olivocochlear suppression in musicians versus non-musicians

The medial olivocochlear efferent (MOCE) branch synapses with outer hair cells (OHCs), and the efferent pathway can be activated via a contralateral acoustic stimulus (CAS). The activation of MOCE can change OHC motile responses and convert signals that are capable of controlling the sensitivity of the peripheral hearing system in a frequency-specific manner. The aim of this study was to examine the MOCE system activity in professional musicians using transient evoked otoacoustic emission test and CAS. Musician group showed stronger suppression in all frequency bands in the presence of CAS

Fractional Hamiltonian analysis of higher order derivatives systems

The fractional Hamiltonian analysis of 1+1 dimensional field theory is investigated and the fractional Ostrogradski's formulation is obtained. The fractional path integral of both simple harmonic oscillator with an acceleration-squares part and a damped oscillator are analyzed. The classical results are obtained when fractional derivatives are replaced with the integer order derivatives.Comment: 13 page

Thermoelectric power of nondegenerate Kane semiconductors under the conditions of mutual electron-phonon drag in a high electric field

The thermoelectric power of nondegenerate Kane semiconductors with due regard for the electron and phonon heating, and their thermal and mutual drags is investigated. The electron spectrum is taken in the Kane two-band form. It is shown that the nonparabolicity of electron spectrum significantly influences the magnitude of the thermoelectric power and leads to a change of its sign and dependence on the heating electric field. The field dependence of the thermoelectric power is determined analytically under various drag conditions.Comment: 25 pages, RevTex formatted, 3 table

Co-firing of biomass with coals Part 1. Thermogravimetric kinetic analysis of combustion of fir (abies bornmulleriana) wood

    Get PDF
The chemical composition and reactivity of fir (Abies bornmulleriana) wood under non-isothermal thermogravimetric (TG) conditions were studied. Oxidation of the wood sample at temperatures near 600 A degrees C caused the loss of aliphatics from the structure of the wood and created a char heavily containing C-O functionalities and of highly aromatic character. On-line FTIR recordings of the combustion of wood indicated the oxidation of carbonaceous and hydrogen content of the wood and release of some hydrocarbons due to pyrolysis reactions that occurred during combustion of the wood. TG analysis was used to study combustion of fir wood. Non-isothermal TG data were used to evaluate the kinetics of the combustion of this carbonaceous material. The article reports application of Ozawa-Flynn-Wall model to deal with non-isothermal TG data for the evaluation of the activation energy corresponding to the combustion of the fir wood. The average activation energy related to fir wood combustion was 128.9 kJ/mol, and the average reaction order for the combustion of wood was calculated as 0.30

In this experimental study, harmful effects of formaldehyde (FA) inhalation on sperm concentration, sperm quality, serum testosterone levels and the rat testes were investigated. In addition, the possible protective effects of rose oil against to these harmful effects were evaluated. For this purpose, 21 albino-Wistar rats were used. The rats in Group I were used as control group. When the rats of Group II were exposed FA (10 ppm/1 h) for 35 days, the rats of Group III inhalated rose oil (1 ml/1 h) after FA. The epididymal tissues were taken for sperm analysing and the testes were removed for histological examination. In addition, testosterone levels were determined from the blood samples. Although the testosterone levels, the epididymal sperm concentration, and the progressive sperm motility significantly decreased, the abnormal sperm rate significantly increased in the Group II when compared to Group I. In the Group III, these damages were seen less. When the rats in the Group II compared with the control group, there were serious histological damages. In the Group III, it was determined that the histological changes were less than group II. It can be expressed that serious damages occurred via formaldehyde exposure in male reproductive system and that the rose oil had protective effects against these damages
