    William (Bill) Peterson's contributions to ocean science, management, and policy

(Bill) Peterson was a dedicated public servant, a leader in the ocean science community, and a mentor to a generation of scientists. Bill recognized the importance of applied science and the need for integrated “big science” programs to advance our understanding of ecosystems and to guide their management. As the first US GLOBEC program manager, he was pivotal in transitioning the concept of understanding how climate change impacts marine ecosystems to an operational national research program. The scientific insight and knowledge generated by US GLOBEC informed and advanced the ecosystem-based management approaches now being implemented for fishery management in the US. Bill held significant leadership roles in numerous international efforts to understand global and regional ecological processes, and organized and chaired a number of influential scientific conferences and their proceedings. He was passionate about working with and training young researchers. Bill’s academic affiliations, notably at Stony Brook and Oregon State Universities, enabled him to advise, train, and mentor a host of students, post-doctoral researchers, and laboratory technicians. Under his collegial guidance they became critical independent thinkers and diligent investigators. His former students and colleagues carry on Bill Peterson’s legacy of research that helps us understand marine ecosystems and informs more effective resource stewardship and conservation

    Training methods for facial image comparison: a literature review

    This literature review was commissioned to explore the psychological literature relating to facial image comparison with a particular emphasis on whether individuals can be trained to improve performance on this task. Surprisingly few studies have addressed this question directly. As a consequence, this review has been extended to cover training of face recognition and training of different kinds of perceptual comparisons where we are of the opinion that the methodologies or findings of such studies are informative. The majority of studies of face processing have examined face recognition, which relies heavily on memory. This may be memory for a face that was learned recently (e.g. minutes or hours previously) or for a face learned longer ago, perhaps after many exposures (e.g. friends, family members, celebrities). Successful face recognition, irrespective of the type of face, relies on the ability to retrieve the to-berecognised face from long-term memory. This memory is then compared to the physically present image to reach a recognition decision. In contrast, in face matching task two physical representations of a face (live, photographs, movies) are compared and so long-term memory is not involved. Because the comparison is between two present stimuli rather than between a present stimulus and a memory, one might expect that face matching, even if not an easy task, would be easier to do and easier to learn than face recognition. In support of this, there is evidence that judgment tasks where a presented stimulus must be judged by a remembered standard are generally more cognitively demanding than judgments that require comparing two presented stimuli Davies & Parasuraman, 1982; Parasuraman & Davies, 1977; Warm and Dember, 1998). Is there enough overlap between face recognition and matching that it is useful to look at the literature recognition? No study has directly compared face recognition and face matching, so we turn to research in which people decided whether two non-face stimuli were the same or different. In these studies, accuracy of comparison is not always better when the comparator is present than when it is remembered. Further, all perceptual factors that were found to affect comparisons of simultaneously presented objects also affected comparisons of successively presented objects in qualitatively the same way. Those studies involved judgments about colour (Newhall, Burnham & Clark, 1957; Romero, Hita & Del Barco, 1986), and shape (Larsen, McIlhagga & Bundesen, 1999; Lawson, Bülthoff & Dumbell, 2003; Quinlan, 1995). Although one must be cautious in generalising from studies of object processing to studies of face processing (see, e.g., section comparing face processing to object processing), from these kinds of studies there is no evidence to suggest that there are qualitative differences in the perceptual aspects of how recognition and matching are done. As a result, this review will include studies of face recognition skill as well as face matching skill. The distinction between face recognition involving memory and face matching not involving memory is clouded in many recognition studies which require observers to decide which of many presented faces matches a remembered face (e.g., eyewitness studies). And of course there are other forensic face-matching tasks that will require comparison to both presented and remembered comparators (e.g., deciding whether any person in a video showing a crowd is the target person).     Human serum metabolic profiles are age dependent

    Understanding the complexity of aging is of utmost importance. This can now be addressed by the novel and powerful approach of metabolomics. However, to date, only a few metabolic studies based on large samples are available. Here, we provide novel and specific information on age-related metabolite concentration changes in human homeostasis. We report results from two population-based studies: the KORA F4 study from Germany as a discovery cohort, with 1038 female and 1124 male participants (32–81 years), and the TwinsUK study as replication, with 724 female participants. Targeted metabolomics of fasting serum samples quantified 131 metabolites by FIA-MS/MS. Among these, 71/34 metabolites were significantly associated with age in women/men (BMI adjusted). We further identified a set of 13 independent metabolites in women (with P values ranging from 4.6 × 10−04 to 7.8 × 10−42, αcorr = 0.004). Eleven of these 13 metabolites were replicated in the TwinsUK study, including seven metabolite concentrations that increased with age (C0, C10:1, C12:1, C18:1, SM C16:1, SM C18:1, and PC aa C28:1), while histidine decreased. These results indicate that metabolic profiles are age dependent and might reflect different aging processes, such as incomplete mitochondrial fatty acid oxidation. The use of metabolomics will increase our understanding of aging networks and may lead to discoveries that help enhance healthy aging

    The contribution of work and non-work stressors to common mental disorders in the 2007 Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey

    Evidence for an effect of work stressors on common mental disorders (CMD) has increased over the past decade. However, studies have not considered whether the effects of work stressors on CMD remain after taking co-occurring non-work stressors into account. Method. Data were from the 2007 Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey, a national population survey of participants >= 16 years living in private households in England. This paper analyses data from employed working age participants (N=3383: 1804 males; 1579 females). ICD-10 diagnoses for depressive episode, generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, agoraphobia, social phobia, panic or mixed anxiety and depression in the past week were derived using a structured diagnostic interview. Questionnaires assessed self-reported work stressors and non-work stressors. Results. The effects of work stressors on CMD were not explained by co-existing non-work stressors. We found independent effects of work and non-work stressors on CMD. Job stress, whether conceptualized as job strain or effort–reward imbalance, together with lower levels of social support at work, recent stressful life events, domestic violence, caring responsibilities, lower levels of non-work social support, debt and poor housing quality were all independently associated with CMD. Social support at home and debt did not influence the effect of work stressors on CMD. Conclusions. Non-work stressors do not appear to make people more susceptible to work stressors ; both contribute to CMD. Tackling workplace stress is likely to benefit employee psychological health even if the employee’s home life is stressful but interventions incorporating non-work stressors may also be effective

    Metal geochemistry in suspended and bed sediments in the eutrophic lowland Salado River basin (Buenos Aires, Argentina)

    The Salado River is a lowland river that drains a vast and productive region of central Argentina into the Río de la Plata estuary. To evaluate water quality and the geochemistry of major and trace metals (Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Pb, Cr and Ni), water and sediments samples were collected along 500 km of the Salado River basin (n = 21). Waters were highly alkaline (pH: 8.8 ± 0.4), saline (5.2 ± 1.8 mS/cm), turbid (467 ± 237 NTU) and eutrophic (chlorophyll a: 187 ± 119 µg/l) with a decreasing gradient towards the river mouth reflecting the contribution of alkaline ground waters and eutrophication at the river head. Suspended particles (70–595 mg/l) were enriched in total organic carbon, nitrogen (5–7 times) and metals (1–4 times) relative to bed sediments, but metal concentrations were 2–10 times below the world river’s average. Consistently, metal concentrations in bed sediments were lower than sediment quality guidelines with an increasing downriver trend following the enrichment of clays. The enrichment factors (EF) and geoaccumulation index (Igeo), calculated with local background metal levels from the deepest layers of a dated sediment core, indicate a general prevalence of natural metal sources (EF < 1.5) with unpolluted sediments (Igeo ≤ 0), excepted for the Chivilcoy stream, which showed a significant enrichment of Zn, Cu and Pb (EF = 2–12; 0 ≤ Igeo ≤ 1) constituting a clear pollution hot spot in the basin.Fil: Tatone, Leandro Martín.     Restenosis and its determinants in first and repeat coronary angioplasty

    Restenosis is the main problem limiting long-term success of percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) and is most accurately evaluated by follow-up angiography. We compared the primary and long-term results of angioplasty in 268 consecutive patients (293 segments) with first PTCA (PTCA 1, angiographic follow-up 98%) and in 66 patients (76 segments) with repeat PTCA after restenosis (PTCA 2, angiographic follow-up 92%). Forty clinical, angiographic and procedural factors were assessed in relation to outcome. Primary success rate was higher in PTCA 2 (91% vs 67.5%) and major complications were fewer (4.5% vs 16%).Higher inflation pressure (7.9 ± 2.3 vs 6.8 ± 1.8 atm, P70%) after PTCA 1 and after PTC A 2 (27% vs 36%, P = NS) and the mean time to recurrence (4.7 vs 5.3 months, P = NS) were similar. Procedural factors were the main determinants of long-term success in primary PTCA. The restenosis risk was independently related to residual stenosis >45% (P<0.001), variant angina (P<0.05) and multivessel disease (P<0.05) after PTCA 1 and to male sex (P<0.001) and higher inflation pressure (P<0.05) after PTCA 2. Mild to moderate intimal tearing was associated with less restenosis after PTC A 1, but not after PTCA 2. Including 9 patients (10 segments) with a third PTCA, 70% of the 66 patients with repeat PTCA had a successful long-term outcome. Repeat angioplasty should therefore be considered as an integral part of PTCA therapy. Restenosis however remains a major concern. An optimal primary result with a minimal residual stenosis is decisive for first PTCA, whereas avoidance of a dissection by using lower inflation pressure on a restenosis might improve the long-term outcome of repeat PTC
