Dual alpha2C/5HT1A receptor agonist allyphenyline induces gastroprotection and inhibits fundic and colonic contractility
Allyphenyline, a novel α2-adrenoceptor (AR) ligand, has been shown to selectively activate α2C-adrenoceptors (AR) and 5HT1A receptors, but also to behave as a neutral antagonist of α2A-ARs. We exploited this unique pharmacological profile to analyze the role of α2C-ARs and 5HT1A receptors in the regulation of gastric mucosal integrity and gastrointestinal motility
Effect of farnesol on Candida dubliniensis morphogenesis
Cell–cell signalling in Candida albicans is a known phenomenon and farnesol was identified as a quorum sensing molecule determining the yeast morphology. The aim of this work was to verify if farnesol had a similar effect on Candida dubliniensis, highlighting the effect of farnesol on Candida spp. morphogenesis.
Methods and Results: Two different strains of C. dubliniensis and one of C. albicans were grown both in RPMI 1640 and in serum in the presence of absence of farnesol. At 150 μmol l -1 farnesol the growth rate of both Candida species was not affected. On the contrary, farnesol inhibited hyphae and pseudohyphae formation in C. dubliniensis.
Conclusion: Farnesol seems to mediate cell morphology in both Candida species.
Significance and Impact of the Study: The effect of farnesol on C. dubliniensis
morphology was not reported previously.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT
Euglycemic Hyperinsulinemia Alters the Response to Orthostatic Stress in Older Adults With Type 2 Diabetes
OBJECTIVE—Insulin has opposing influences on blood pressure by simultaneously increasing adrenergic activity and vasodilatating peripheral blood vessels. In this study, we sought to determine whether hyperinsulinemia affects tilt table responses in older adults with type 2 diabetes not complicated by orthostatic hypotension
Perturbative Expansion around the Gaussian Effective Potential of the Fermion Field Theory
We have extended the perturbative expansion method around the Gaussian
effective action to the fermionic field theory, by taking the 2-dimensional
Gross-Neveu model as an example. We have computed both the zero temperature and
the finite temperature effective potentials of the Gross-Neveu model up to the
first perturbative correction terms, and have found that the critical
temperature, at which dynamically broken symmetry is restored, is significantly
improved for small value of the flavour number.Comment: 14pages, no figures, other comments Typographical errors are

A model for adapting 3D graphics based on scalable coding, real-time simplification and remote rendering
Most current multiplayer 3D games can only be played on dedicated platforms, requiring specifically designed content and communication over a predefined network. To overcome these limitations, the OLGA (On-Line GAming) consortium has devised a framework to develop distributive, multiplayer 3D games. Scalability at the level of content, platforms and networks is exploited to achieve the best trade-offs between complexity and quality
A solar heat-pump system for air-conditioning, water heating and drying
In this study, the performance of a three-in-one solar system is investigated. The three applications of
the system are: air-conditioning, water heating and drying, which can be served simultaneously or
independently. The presence of evaporator-collector enables the system to operate round the clock.
Parallel arrangement of the evaporator and evaporator-collector is made to improve the system
performance. A large fraction of the energy requirements is met by a combination of energy collected
from sun, ambient and the energy recovered from a vapour compression heat-pump system, which
also serves as an air-conditioner. The system shows good potential for implementation in commercial
and residential applications and would give a new dimension in the process of replacement of
conventional energy with renewable energy sources
