Geomagnetic storm dependence on the solar flare class
Content. Solar flares are often used as precursors of geomagnetic storms. In
particular, Howard and Tappin (2005) recently published in A&A a dependence
between X-ray class of solar flares and Ap and Dst indexes of geomagnetic
storms which contradicts to early published results.
Aims. We compare published results on flare-storm dependences and discuss
possible sources of the discrepancy.
Methods. We analyze following sources of difference: (1) different intervals
of observations, (2) different statistics and (3) different methods of event
identification and comparison.
Results. Our analysis shows that magnitude of geomagnetic storms is likely to
be independent on X-ray class of solar flares.Comment: 3 pages, 1 tabl
Functional maturation of isolated neural progenitor cells from the adult rat hippocampus
Although neural progenitor cells (NPCs) may provide a source of new neurons to alleviate neural trauma, little is known about their electrical properties as they differentiate. We have previously shown that single NPCs from the adult rat hippocampus can be cloned in the presence of heparan sulphate chains purified from the hippocampus, and that these cells can be pushed into a proliferative phenotype with the mitogen FGF2 [Chipperfield, H., Bedi, K.S., Cool, S.M. & Nurcombe, V. (2002) Int. J. Dev. Biol., 46, 661-670]. In this study, the active and passive electrical properties of both undifferentiated and differentiated adult hippocampal NPCs, from 0 to 12 days in vitro as single-cell preparations, were investigated. Sparsely plated, undifferentiated NPCs had a resting membrane potential of approximate to -90 mV and were electrically inexcitable. In > 70%, ATP and benzoylbenzoyl-ATP evoked an inward current and membrane depolarization, whereas acetylcholine, noradrenaline, glutamate and GABA had no detectable effect. In Fura-2-loaded undifferentiated NPCs, ATP and benzoylbenzoyl-ATP evoked a transient increase in the intracellular free Ca2+ concentration, which was dependent on extracellular Ca2+ and was inhibited reversibly by pyridoxalphosphate-6-azophenyl-2'-4'-disulphonic acid (PPADS), a P2 receptor antagonist. After differentiation, NPC-derived neurons became electrically excitable, expressing voltage-dependent TTX-sensitive Na+ channels, low- and high-voltage-activated Ca2+ channels and delayed-rectifier K+ channels. Differentiated cells also possessed functional glutamate, GABA, glycine and purinergic (P2X) receptors. Appearance of voltage-dependent and ligand-gated ion channels appears to be an important early step in the differentiation of NPCs
Nonfactorizable contributions in B decays to charmonium: the case of
Nonleptonic to charmonium decays generally show deviations from the
factorization predictions. For example, the mode has
been experimentally observed with sizeable branching fraction while its
factorized amplitude vanishes. We investigate the role of rescattering effects
mediated by intermediate charmed meson production in this class of decay modes,
and consider with the meson.
Using an effective lagrangian describing interactions of pairs of heavy-light
mesons with a quarkonium state, we relate this mode to the
analogous mode with in the final state. We find large enough to be measured at the factories, so that this decay

Visual processing deficits in 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome.
Carriers of the rare 22q11.2 microdeletion present with a high percentage of positive and negative symptoms and a high genetic risk for schizophrenia. Visual processing impairments have been characterized in schizophrenia, but less so in 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome (DS). Here, we focus on visual processing using high-density EEG and source imaging in 22q11.2DS participants (N = 25) and healthy controls (N = 26) with an illusory contour discrimination task. Significant differences between groups emerged at early and late stages of visual processing. In 22q11.2DS, we first observed reduced amplitudes over occipital channels and reduced source activations within dorsal and ventral visual stream areas during the P1 (100-125 ms) and within ventral visual cortex during the N1 (150-170 ms) visual evoked components. During a later window implicated in visual completion (240-285 ms), we observed an increase in global amplitudes in 22q11.2DS. The increased surface amplitudes for illusory contours at this window were inversely correlated with positive subscales of prodromal symptoms in 22q11.2DS. The reduced activity of ventral and dorsal visual areas during early stages points to an impairment in visual processing seen both in schizophrenia and 22q11.2DS. During intervals related to perceptual closure, the inverse correlation of high amplitudes with positive symptoms suggests that participants with 22q11.2DS who show an increased brain response to illusory contours during the relevant window for contour processing have less psychotic symptoms and might thus be at a reduced prodromal risk for schizophrenia
Global microRNA profiling in human urinary exosomes reveals novel disease biomarkers and cellular pathways for Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease
MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play an important role in regulating gene expression in health and disease but their role in modifying disease expression in Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease (ADPKD) remains uncertain. Here, we profiled human urinary exosome miRNA by global small RNA-sequencing in an initial discovery cohort of seven patients with ADPKD with early disease (eGFR over 60ml/min/1.73m2), nine with late disease (eGFR under 60ml/min/1.73m2), and compared their differential expression with six age and sex matched healthy controls. Two kidney-enriched candidate miRNA families were identified (miR-192/miR-194-2 and miR-30) and selected for confirmatory testing in a 60 patient validation cohort by quantitative polymerase chain reaction. We confirmed that miR-192-5p, miR-194- 5p, miR-30a-5p, miR-30d-5p and miR-30e-5p were significantly downregulated in patient urine exosomes, in murine Pkd1 cystic kidneys and in human PKD1 cystic kidney tissue. All five miRNAs showed significant correlations with baseline eGFR and ultrasound-determined mean kidney length and improved the diagnostic performance (area under the curve) of mean kidney length for the rate of disease progression. Finally, inverse correlations of these two miRNA families with increased expression in their predicted target genes in patient PKD1 cystic tissue identified dysregulated pathways and transcriptional networks including novel interactions between miR-194-5p and two potentially relevant candidate genes, PIK3R1 and ANO1. Thus, our results identify a subset of urinary exosomal miRNAs that could serve as novel biomarkers of disease progression and suggest new therapeutic targets in ADPKD
Measurement of the p-pbar -> Wgamma + X cross section at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV and WWgamma anomalous coupling limits
The WWgamma triple gauge boson coupling parameters are studied using p-pbar
-> l nu gamma + X (l = e,mu) events at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV. The data were
collected with the DO detector from an integrated luminosity of 162 pb^{-1}
delivered by the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The cross section times branching
fraction for p-pbar -> W(gamma) + X -> l nu gamma + X with E_T^{gamma} > 8 GeV
and Delta R_{l gamma} > 0.7 is 14.8 +/- 1.6 (stat) +/- 1.0 (syst) +/- 1.0 (lum)
pb. The one-dimensional 95% confidence level limits on anomalous couplings are
-0.88 < Delta kappa_{gamma} < 0.96 and -0.20 < lambda_{gamma} < 0.20.Comment: Submitted to Phys. Rev. D Rapid Communication
Measurement of the ttbar Production Cross Section in ppbar Collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV using Kinematic Characteristics of Lepton + Jets Events
We present a measurement of the top quark pair ttbar production cross section
in ppbar collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV using 230 pb**{-1}
of data collected by the DO detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We
select events with one charged lepton (electron or muon), large missing
transverse energy, and at least four jets, and extract the ttbar content of the
sample based on the kinematic characteristics of the events. For a top quark
mass of 175 GeV, we measure sigma(ttbar) = 6.7 {+1.4-1.3} (stat) {+1.6- 1.1}
(syst) +/-0.4 (lumi) pb, in good agreement with the standard model prediction.Comment: submitted to Phys.Rev.Let

We present a measurement of the top quark pair () production cross
section () in collisions at TeV
using 230 pb of data collected by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab
Tevatron Collider. We select events with one charged lepton (electron or muon),
missing transverse energy, and jets in the final state. We employ
lifetime-based b-jet identification techniques to further enhance the
purity of the selected sample. For a top quark mass of 175 GeV, we
measure pb, in
