Dwarf Copper-Gold Porphyry Deposits of the Buchim-Damjan-Borov Dol Ore District, Republic of Macedonia (FYROM)

    Get PDF
The metallogenic aspects, tectonic setting, magmatism, structure, and composition of Au-and Ag-bearing porphyry copper deposits in the Buchim-Damjan-Borov Dol ore district and their genetic features are considered and compared with earlier published data. Special attention is paid to supergene gold in heavy concentrate halos of the Borov Dol deposit. The total Cu reserves of the deposits discussed in this paper do not exceed 150 kt. The Buchim deposit likely is the world's smallest deposit of this type currently involved in mining. A comprehensive study of these dwarf porphyry copper deposits is undertaken to answer questions on the conditions of their formation. How do they differ from formation conditions of giant deposits

The analysis of mineral parageneses, ore textures and structures, stable isotopes in minerals provided a base for understanding of mineralization processes in two big metasomatic Pb-Zn deposits Sasa and Toranica located in the same structural-metallogenic zone of SMM.

Evolution of ore-forming fluids in the Bukovik-Kadiica porphyry Cu deposit, Republic of Macedonia

The Bukovik-Kadiica mineralized system is hosted by Tertiary dacitic and andesitic volcanic rocks which have intruded the basement of Palaeozoic schists in the Serbo-Macedonian Massif of eastern Macedonia. The latest geological exploration has confirmed that this porphyry copper mineralizationis characterized by a dominance of chalcocite and covellite with associated chalcopyrite, emplectite, and bornite, with the highest grades in a zone of supergene enrichment. Silicification is the dominant alteration within the mineralized system, whilst zones of potassic, phyllic, argillic, propylitic, and advanced argillic alteration are also present. Silicification and sulphide mineralization are located in stockworks in altered dacite and andesite breccia. Dissolution of primary sulphides and chemical leaching are evident in the zones of oxidation, dominated by limonite breccia. The main copper mineralization has a vertical extent between 90 and 220 m. Fluid inclusion studies of mineralized quartz veins have identified three separate groups of fluids: saline inclusions which homogenize at 326-501 °C and have a salinity of 32-45 wt% NaCl equiv., vapour-dominated inclusions which homogenize at 438-497 °C and have a salinity of 6–16 wt% NaCl equiv., and more dilute, two-phase vapour–liquid inclusions that homogenize at 360-627 °C and have a salinity of 3-24 wt% NaCl equiv

Biomonitoring of Atmospheric Pollution with Heavy Metals in the Copper Mine Vicinity Located near Radovis, Republic of Macedonia

This investigation was undertaken to determine the atmospheric pollution with heavy metals due to copper mining Bucim near Radovis, the Republic of Macedonia. Moss samples (Hyloconium splendens and Pleurozium schrebery) were used for biomonitoring the possible atmospheric pollution with heavy metals in mine vicinity. Sixteen elements (Al, As, Ba, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mn, Na, Ni, Pb, Sr, and Zn) were analysed by application of flame and electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS and ETAAS) and atomic emission spectrometry with inductively coupled plasma (ICP-AES). The obtained values were statistically processed using nonparametric and parametric analysis. The median value for copper obtained from moss samples (10 mg/kg) was much lower compared with the same values for the whole territory of the Republic of Macedonia (22 mg/kg). The range of values (2.1–198 mg/kg) shows much higher content of this element in the samples taken from the study area compared to the appropriate values for the whole territory of Macedonia. The association of elements As, Cd, Cu, Fe, Pb, and Zn was singled out by factor analysis as a characteristic anthropogenic group of elements. Maps of area deposition were made for this group of elements, wherefrom correlation of these anthropogenic born elements was confirmed

Comunicação oral da qual só está disponível o resumo.Mining accompany our civilization since evolution. Since the “Copper (Chalcolithic) Age” and later “Golden Age”, mining activities have created great wealth. Unfortunately, beside wealth the exploitation of metal rich ores, have been almost always correlated with a negative impact to the nearby ecosystems. In this study a broad area around the active Pb-Zn Sasa mine (NE FYR Macedonia) was characterized, to evaluate the contents of some Potentially Toxic Elements (PTE). The PTE were determined in the surrounding fresh waters (lake and rivers), soils and the home-grown vegetables. The evaluation of the potential hazardous ef ects of the PTE, especially on humans, is a key goal. The PTE’s were determined by ICP-AES and ICP-MS. Furthermore also detailed questionnaires were applied among the local inhabitants. Sequential extraction analyses of selected soil samples revealed that the majority of PTE was bounded to water soluble and exchangeable fraction, which shows that those elements (Ag, As, Cd, Cu, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sb and Zn) are therefore very easily mobile and consequently available to plants. According to the applied questionnaires, the consumption of home-grown foodstuf s is high, and certain vegetables, such as tomatoes, peppers, salads, etc., are consumed every day or even more than once a day. Chemical evaluation of PTE in home-grown vegetables revealed that the most crucial PTE’s (those which heavily exceed upper allowable limits) are Cd, Co, Cu, Pb and Zn, and are closely followed by Cr and As. The calculated Health Risk Index (HRI) shows extremely high estimated values, both for adults and children. As the study area is surrounded by rich metallogenic ore deposits, is expected that the natural background is slightly higher than elsewhere. Nevertheless, the concentrations of PTE’s in waters used for irrigation which were increased and the wind-blown (aeorogenic) PTE’s pollution from the nearby tailings dam, both increases the PTE contents in the studied foodstuf s. Thus, the health of inhabitants in this area is of high concern

Tectonic Position of the Alshar Au–As–Sb–Tl Deposit, Macedonia

During the second half of the 20th century, several dozen large and medium deposits of disseminated pyrite–marcasite ores with total gold reserves of more than 6000 t and annual gold production of ~200 t were found in the Basin and Range Province, Nevada, United States [1, 2]. This unique gold district is termed as the Carlin trend. The limited development of the Carlintype mineralization in other gold districts of the world is presently a debated issue. Naturally, each Carlin-type mineralization inferred beyond Nevada requires detailed investigations. In 2004, we began to study the Alshar deposit with Carlin-type mineralization together with Macedonian geologists [3]. The Alshar deposit is a large object in terms of Tl reserves and a medium reserve in terms of inferred Au reserves [3, 4]
