The Evolution of Protoplanetary Disks Around Millisecond Pulsars: The PSR 1257 +12 System
We model the evolution of protoplanetary disks surrounding millisecond
pulsars, using PSR 1257+12 as a test case. Initial conditions were chosen to
correspond to initial angular momenta expected for supernova-fallback disks and
disks formed from the tidal disruption of a companion star. Models were run
under two models for the viscous evolution of disks: fully viscous and layered
accretion disk models. Supernova-fallback disks result in a distribution of
solids confined to within 1-2 AU and produce the requisite material to form the
three known planets surrounding PSR 1257+12. Tidal disruption disks tend to
slightly underproduce solids interior to 1 AU, required for forming the pulsar
planets, while overproducing the amount of solids where no body, lunar mass or
greater, exists. Disks evolving under 'layered' accretion spread somewhat less
and deposit a higher column density of solids into the disk. In all cases,
circumpulsar gas dissipates on year timescales, making

Hybrid Mechanisms for Gas/Ice Giant Planet Formation
The effects of gas pressure gradients on the motion of solid grains in the
solar nebula substantially enhances the efficiency of forming protoplanetary
cores in the standard core accretion model in 'hybrid' scenarios for gas/ice
giant planet formation. Such a scenario is enhanced core accretion which
results from Epstein-drag induced inward radial migration of mm-sized grains
and subsequent particle subdisk gravitational instability needed to build up a
population of 1 km planetesimals. Solid/gas ratios can be enhanced by nearly
over those in Minimum Mass Solar Nebula (MMSN) in the outer
solar nebula (a 20 AU), increasing the oligarchic core masses and
decreasing formation timescales for protoplanetary cores. A 10
core can form on year timescales at 15 - 25 AU compared to
years in the standard model,alleviating the major problem

Britain, Bulgaria and benefits:the political rhetoric of European (dis)integration
This chapter considers the political controversy in Britain over the lifting of restrictions of freedom of movement on European Union (EU) citizens from Bulgaria and Romania in January 2014. The response of the then Conservative-Liberal Democrat Coalition Government centred on altering the rules on the payment of welfare benefits to potential new EU immigrants such that they would not be entitled to claim these benefits for 3 months after entry to the United Kingdom. This policy led to a split in the coalition, with the Liberal Democrat leadership claiming that it was a panicked move by the majority Conservative coalition partner, and moreover that it was a blatant attempt to appeal the electorate in an effort to be seen to be doing something to stop the welfare benefit system from being abused by ‘foreigners’. The backdrop to this political fracas centred on the economic contribution of East European immigrants to Britain and the claim and counterclaim over the issues jobs, welfare benefits and services such as English language support in schools. These contentious issues are examined in terms of an analysis of online comments to posted in reaction to a political interview with Vince Cable, the Liberal Democrat business secretary, who claimed that the Conservatives were attempting to placate public disquiet over immigration as a response to the rising popularity of the United Kingdom Independence Party
Preterm infants have deficient monocyte and lymphocyte cytokine responses to Group B Streptococcus
Group B streptococcus GBS) is an important cause of early-and late-onset sepsis in the newborn. Preterm infants have markedly increased susceptibility and worse outcomes, but their immunological responses to GBS are poorly defined. We compared mononuclear cell and whole-blood cytokine responses to heat-killed GBS HKGBS) of preterm infants gestational age [GA], 26 to 33 weeks), term infants, and healthy adults. We investigated the kinetics and cell source of induced cytokines and quantified HKGBS phagocytosis. HKGBS-induced tumor necrosis factor TNF) and interleukin 6 (IL-6) secretion was significantly impaired in preterm infants compared to that in term infants and adults. These cytokines were predominantly monocytic in origin, and production was intrinsically linked to HKGBS phagocytosis. Very preterm infants GA, < 30 weeks) had fewer cytokine-producing monocytes, but nonopsonic phagocytosis ability was comparable to that for term infants and adults. Exogenous complement supplementation increased phagocytosis in all groups, as well as the proportion of preterm monocytes producing IL-6, but for very preterm infants, responses were still deficient. Similar defective preterm monocyte responses were observed in fresh whole cord blood stimulated with live GBS. Lymphocyte-associated cytokines were significantly deficient for both preterm and term infants compared to levels for adults. These findings indicate that a subset of preterm monocytes do not respond to GBS, a defect compounded by generalized weaker lymphocyte responses in newborns. Together these deficient responses may increase the susceptibility of preterm infants to GBS infection
Confirmation of the planet around HD 95086 by direct imaging
VLT/NaCo angular differential imaging at L' (3.8 microns) revealed a probable
giant planet comoving with the young and early-type HD 95086 also known to
harbor an extended debris disk. The discovery was based on the proper motion
analysis of two datasets spanning 15 months. However, the second dataset
suffered from bad atmospheric conditions, which limited the significance of the
redetection at the 3 sigma level. In this Letter, we report new VLT/NaCo
observations of HD 95086 obtained on 2013 June 26-27 at L' to recover the
planet candidate. We unambiguously redetect the companion HD 95086 b with
multiple independent pipelines at a signal-to-noise ratio greater than or equal
to 5. Combined with previously reported measurements, our astrometry decisively
shows that the planet is comoving with HD 95086 and inconsistent with a
background object. With a revised mass of 5 pm 2 Jupiter masses, estimated from
its L' photometry and "hot-start" models at 17 pm 4 Myr, HD 95086 b becomes a
new benchmark for further physical and orbital characterization of young giant

On the Number of Unbordered Factors
We illustrate a general technique for enumerating factors of k-automatic
sequences by proving a conjecture on the number f(n) of unbordered factors of
the Thue-Morse sequence. We show that f(n) = 4 and that f(n) = n
infinitely often. We also give examples of automatic sequences having exactly 2
unbordered factors of every length
JHK Observations of Faint Standard Stars in the Mauna Kea Near-Infrared Photometric System
JHK photometry in the Mauna Kea Observatory (MKO) near-IR system is presented
for 115 stars. Of these, 79 are UKIRT standards and 42 are LCO standards. The
average brightness is 11.5 mag, with a range of 10 to 15. The average number of
nights each star was observed is 4, and the average of the internal error of
the final results is 0.011 mag. These JHK data agree with those reported by
other groups to 0.02 mag. The measurements are used to derive transformations
between the MKO JHK photometric system and the UKIRT, LCO and 2MASS systems.
The 2MASS-MKO data scatter by 0.05 mag for redder stars: 2MASS-J includes H2O
features in dwarfs and MKO-K includes CO features in giants. Transformations
derived for stars whose spectra contain only weak features cannot give accurate
transformations for objects with strong absorption features within a filter
bandpasses. We find evidence of systematic effects at the 0.02 mag level in the
photometry of stars with J<11 and H,K<10.5. This is due to an underestimate of
the linearity correction for stars observed with the shortest exposure times;
very accurate photometry of stars approaching the saturation limits of infrared
detectors which are operated in double-read mode is difficult to obtain. Four
stars in the sample, GSPC S705-D, FS 116 (B216-b7), FS 144 (Ser-EC84) and FS 32
(Feige 108), may be variable. 84 stars in the sample have 11< J< 15 and
10.5<H,K<15, are not suspected to be variable, and have magnitudes with an
estimated error <0.027 mag; 79 of these have an error of <0.020 mag. These
represent the first published high-accuracy JHK stellar photometry in the MKO
photometric system; we recommend these objects be employed as primary standards

Efficient injection from large telescopes into single-mode fibres: Enabling the era of ultra-precision astronomy
Photonic technologies offer numerous advantages for astronomical instruments
such as spectrographs and interferometers owing to their small footprints and
diverse range of functionalities. Operating at the diffraction-limit, it is
notoriously difficult to efficiently couple such devices directly with large
telescopes. We demonstrate that with careful control of both the non-ideal
pupil geometry of a telescope and residual wavefront errors, efficient coupling
with single-mode devices can indeed be realised. A fibre injection was built
within the Subaru Coronagraphic Extreme Adaptive Optics (SCExAO) instrument.
Light was coupled into a single-mode fibre operating in the near-IR (J-H bands)
which was downstream of the extreme adaptive optics system and the pupil
apodising optics. A coupling efficiency of 86% of the theoretical maximum limit
was achieved at 1550 nm for a diffraction-limited beam in the laboratory, and
was linearly correlated with Strehl ratio. The coupling efficiency was constant
to within <30% in the range 1250-1600 nm. Preliminary on-sky data with a Strehl
ratio of 60% in the H-band produced a coupling efficiency into a single-mode
fibre of ~50%, consistent with expectations. The coupling was >40% for 84% of
the time and >50% for 41% of the time. The laboratory results allow us to
forecast that extreme adaptive optics levels of correction (Strehl ratio >90%
in H-band) would allow coupling of >67% (of the order of coupling to multimode
fibres currently). For Strehl ratios <20%, few-port photonic lanterns become a
superior choice but the signal-to-noise must be considered. These results
illustrate a clear path to efficient on-sky coupling into a single-mode fibre,
which could be used to realise modal-noise-free radial velocity machines,
very-long-baseline optical/near-IR interferometers and/or simply exploit
photonic technologies in future instrument design.Comment: 15 pages, 16 figures, 1 table, published in A&
CHIMPS: the <sup>13</sup>CO/C<sup>18</sup>O (<i>J</i> = 3 → 2) Heterodyne Inner Milky Way Plane Survey
We present the 13CO/C18O (J = 3 → 2) Heterodyne Inner Milky Way Plane Survey (CHIMPS) which has been carried out using the Heterodyne Array Receiver Program on the 15 m James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) in Hawaii. The high-resolution spectral survey currently covers |b| ≤ 0.5° and 28° ≲ l ≲ 46°, with an angular resolution of 15 arcsec in 0.5 km s-1 velocity channels. The spectra have a median rms of ˜0.6 K at this resolution, and for optically thin gas at an excitation temperature of 10 K, this sensitivity corresponds to column densities of NH2 ˜ 3 × 1020 cm-2 and NH2 ˜ 4 × 1021 cm-2 for 13CO and C18O, respectively. The molecular gas that CHIMPS traces is at higher column densities and is also more optically thin than in other publicly available CO surveys due to its rarer isotopologues, and thus more representative of the three-dimensional structure of the clouds. The critical density of the J = 3 → 2 transition of CO is ≳104 cm-3 at temperatures of ≤20 K, and so the higher density gas associated with star formation is well traced. These data complement other existing Galactic plane surveys, especially the JCMT Galactic Plane Survey which has similar spatial resolution and column density sensitivity, and the Herschel infrared Galactic Plane Survey. In this paper, we discuss the observations, data reduction and characteristics of the survey, presenting integrated-emission maps for the region covered. Position-velocity diagrams allow comparison with Galactic structure models of the Milky Way, and while we find good agreement with a particular four-arm model, there are some significant deviations
Socioeconomic inequalities in health among Swedish adolescents - adding the subjective perspective
Abstract Background Socioeconomic inequalities in adolescent health predict future inequalities in adult health. Subjective measures of socioeconomic status (SES) may contribute with an increased understanding of these inequalities. The aim of this study was to investigate socioeconomic health inequalities using both a subjective and an objective measure of SES among Swedish adolescents. Method Cross-sectional HBSC-data from 2002 to 2014 was used with a total sample of 23,088 adolescents aged 11–15 years. Three measures of self-rated health (dependent variables) were assessed: multiple health complaints, life satisfaction and health perception. SES was measured objectively by the Family Affluence Scale (FAS) and subjectively by “perceived family wealth” (independent variables). The trend for health inequalities was investigated descriptively with independent t-tests and the relationship between independent and dependent variables was investigated with multiple logistic regression analysis. Gender, age and survey year was considered as possible confounders. Results Subjective SES was more strongly related to health outcomes than the objective measure (FAS). Also, the relation between FAS and health was weakened and even reversed (for multiple health complaints) when subjective SES was tested simultaneously in regression models (FAS OR: 1.03, CI: 1.00;1.06 and subjective SES OR: 0.66, CI: 0.63;0.68). Conclusions The level of socioeconomic inequalities in adolescent health varied depending on which measure that was used to define SES. When focusing on adolescents, the subjective appraisals of SES is important to consider because they seem to provide a stronger tool for identifying inequalities in health for this group. This finding is important for policy makers to consider given the persistence of health inequalities in Sweden and other high-income countries
