A nebula around Nova BT Monocerotis

Imaging of the Host Galaxies of Three X-Ray Selected BL Lacertae Objects
Hubble Space Telescope (HST) WFPC-2 I-band (F814W) images of three X-ray
selected BL Lacertae objects (MS1221.8+2452, MS1407.9+5954, & MS2143.4+0704)
reveal that each of these BL Lac objects is well-centered in an extended
nebulosity that is consistent in brightness and morphology with being light
from an elliptical galaxy at the previously reported redshifts of these BL Lac
objects. Each of the detected host galaxies have radial surface brightness
profiles that are well fit by a DeVaucouleurs' law with effective radii of
between 3 to 12 kpc (H_0=50 km s^{-1} Mpc^{-1}, q_0 = 0). The absolute
magnitudes of the host galaxies fall in the range -24.7 < M_I < -23.5, in the
range of luminosities determined for other BL Lacertae object host galaxies. In
addition to allowing the measurement of the host galaxy magnitudes and radial
surface brightness profiles, the HST images allow a search for substructure in
the host galaxies and the presence of close companion galaxies at spatial
resolutions not yet achievable from the ground. While no evidence was found for
any ``bars'' or spiral arms, ``boxy'' isophotes are present in the host galaxy
of at least one of the three objects observed as part of this study
(MS2143.4+0704). The apparent magnitudes and image properties of the companions
of the BL Lac objects are catalogued as part of this work. The three BL Lacs
appear to occur in diverse environments, from being fairly isolated
(MS1221.8+2452) to possibly being a member of a rich group of galaxies

The impact of the urban canyon geometry in the nocturnal heat island intensity: analysis by a simplified model adapted to a GIS
A geometria urbana é um dos fatores de maior influência na intensidade da ilha de calor urbana. Seu estudo requer a caracterização de cânions urbanos, geralmente medidos pela relação entre a altura dos edifícios e a largura da rua (H/W), conceito aplicado no modelo numérico de Oke em 1981. O objetivo deste artigo é verificar o impacto da geometria do cânion urbano na intensidade de ilhas de calor noturna. Para isso, foram realizados levantamento de dados climáticos e de geometria urbana em duas cidades brasileiras. Os valores de intensidade de ilha de calor foram confrontados com os simulados pelo modelo original de Oke (1981), o qual foi calibrado e adaptado à plataforma SIG, de forma a possibilitar a incorporação de outro parâmetro de geometria, além da relação H/W: o comprimento de rugosidade. Esse processo gerou uma nova ferramenta de cálculo, que é denominda THIS (Tool for Heat Island Simulation). Aplicou-se o novo modelo para simular alguns cenários urbanos hipotéticos, que representam vários tipos de cânions urbanos. Os resultados demonstraram que cânions urbanos de maior rugosidade amenizam as intensidades de ilha de calor noturna em relação a um cânion de mesmo valor de relação H/W e menor rugosidade.Urban geometry is one of the main factors influencing the development of urban heat islands. The study of urban geometry requires a characterization of urban canyons, which can be usually measured by the H/W ratio (a relationship between the height and the width of a street), a concept applied in a numerical model by Oke in 1981. The aim of this paper is to verify the impact of the canyon geometry on the intensity of the nocturnal urban heat islands. For this purpose, measurements of climate data and urban geometry were conducted in two Brazilian cities. The values of heat island intensity were cross-examined to those generated with the application of the original Oke's model. Therefore, this latter was calibrated and adapted to run in a GIS platform, allowing the incorporation of a geometric parameter other than the H/W ratio - the roughness length. Then, this process produced a new calculation tool, which is called THIS (Tool for Heat Island Simulation). The new model was applied to simulate some hypothetical urban scenarios representing several urban canyons types. Extended High-Ionization Nuclear Emission-Line Region in the Seyfert Galaxy NGC 4051
We present an optical spectroscopic analysis of the well-known Seyfert galaxy
NGC 4051. The high-ionization nuclear emission-line region (HINER) traced by
[Fe X]6374 is found to be spatially extended to a radius of 3a rcseconds (150
pc) west and southwest from the nucleus; NGC 4051 is the third example which
has an extended HINER.
The nuclear spectrum shows that the flux of [Fe X]6374 is stronger than that
of [Fe VII] 6087 in our observation. This property cannot be interpreted in
terms of a simple one-zone photoionization model.
In order to understand what happens in the nuclear region in NGC 4051, we
investigate the physical condition of the nuclear emission-line region in
detail using new photoionization models in which the following three
emission-line components are taken into account; (1) optically thick,
ionization-bounded clouds; (2) optically thin, matter-bounded clouds; and (3) a
contamination component which emits H and H lines. Here the
observed extended HINER is considered to be associated with the low-density,
matter-bounded clouds. Candidates of the contamination component are either the
broad-line region (BLR) or nuclear star forming regions or both. The complexity
of the excitation condition found in NGC 4051 can be consistently understood if

Urban water balance 1 Model for daily totals.
The water balance provides a framework through which to study the interactions between the elements of the hydrologic cycle. This paper presents a simple model for evaluating the components of the urban water balance based on standard climate data and easily obtained parameters to describe the site. The time scale can be varied from 1 day to at least 1 year depending on the availability of appropriate input data and the form of the evapotranspiration submodel chosen. The evapotranspiration model proposed is of the combination type with modifications to allow for application to the suburban environment. An important methodological concept throughout the model is the recognition that a suburban area can be subdivided into three discrete surface types for hydroclimate purposes (impervious, pervious unirrigated, and pervious irrigated). Presented in this paper is an outline of the model, sensitivity analyses, and information for its implementation
Optical spectroscopy of flares from the black hole X-ray transient A0620-00 in quiescence
We present a time-resolved spectrophotometric study of the optical
variability in the quiescent soft X-ray transient A0620-00. Superimposed on the
double-humped continuum lightcurve are the well known flare events which last
tens of minutes. Some of the flare events that appear in the continuum
lightcurve are also present in the emission line lightcurves. From the Balmer
line flux and variations, we find that the persistent emission is optically
thin. During the flare event at phase 1.15 the Balmer decrement dropped
suggesting either a significant increase in temperature or that the flares are
more optically thick than the continuum. The data suggests that there are two
HI emitting regions, the accretion disc and the accretion stream/disc region,
with different Balmer decrements. The orbital modulation of H with the
continuum suggests that the steeper decrement is most likely associated with
the stream/disc impact region. We construct Doppler images of the H and
H emission lines. Apart from showing enhanced blurred emission at the
region where the stream impacts the accretion disc, the maps also show
significant extended structure from the opposite side of the disc. The trailed
spectra show characteristic S-wave features that can be interpreted in the

A Substantial Population of Low Mass Stars in Luminous Elliptical Galaxies
The stellar initial mass function (IMF) describes the mass distribution of
stars at the time of their formation and is of fundamental importance for many
areas of astrophysics. The IMF is reasonably well constrained in the disk of
the Milky Way but we have very little direct information on the form of the IMF
in other galaxies and at earlier cosmic epochs. Here we investigate the stellar
mass function in elliptical galaxies by measuring the strength of the Na I
doublet and the Wing-Ford molecular FeH band in their spectra. These lines are
strong in stars with masses <0.3 Msun and weak or absent in all other types of
stars. We unambiguously detect both signatures, consistent with previous
studies that were based on data of lower signal-to-noise ratio. The direct
detection of the light of low mass stars implies that they are very abundant in
elliptical galaxies, making up >80% of the total number of stars and
contributing >60% of the total stellar mass. We infer that the IMF in massive
star-forming galaxies in the early Universe produced many more low mass stars
than the IMF in the Milky Way disk, and was probably slightly steeper than the
Salpeter form in the mass range 0.1 - 1 Msun.Comment: To appear in Natur
Efficacy and effectiveness of screen and treat policies in prevention of type 2 diabetes: systematic review and meta-analysis of screening tests and interventions.
OBJECTIVES: To assess diagnostic accuracy of screening tests for pre-diabetes and efficacy of interventions (lifestyle or metformin) in preventing onset of type 2 diabetes in people with pre-diabetes. DESIGN: Systematic review and meta-analysis. DATA SOURCES AND METHOD: Medline, PreMedline, and Embase. Study protocols and seminal papers were citation-tracked in Google Scholar to identify definitive trials and additional publications. Data on study design, methods, and findings were extracted onto Excel spreadsheets; a 20% sample was checked by a second researcher. Data extracted for screening tests included diagnostic accuracy and population prevalence. Two meta-analyses were performed, one summarising accuracy of screening tests (with the oral glucose tolerance test as the standard) for identification of pre-diabetes, and the other assessing relative risk of progression to type 2 diabetes after either lifestyle intervention or treatment with metformin. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: Empirical studies evaluating accuracy of tests for identification of pre-diabetes. Interventions (randomised trials and interventional studies) with a control group in people identified through screening. No language restrictions. RESULTS: 2874 titles were scanned and 148 papers (covering 138 studies) reviewed in full. The final analysis included 49 studies of screening tests (five of which were prevalence studies) and 50 intervention trials. HbA1c had a mean sensitivity of 0.49 (95% confidence interval 0.40 to 0.58) and specificity of 0.79 (0.73 to 0.84), for identification of pre-diabetes, though different studies used different cut-off values. Fasting plasma glucose had a mean sensitivity of 0.25 (0.19 to 0.32) and specificity of 0.94 (0.92 to 0.96). Different measures of glycaemic abnormality identified different subpopulations (for example, 47% : of people with abnormal HbA1c had no other glycaemic abnormality). Lifestyle interventions were associated with a 36% (28% to 43%) reduction in relative risk of type 2 diabetes over six months to six years, attenuating to 20% (8% to 31%) at follow-up in the period after the trails. CONCLUSIONS: HbA1c is neither sensitive nor specific for detecting pre-diabetes; fasting glucose is specific but not sensitive. Interventions in people classified through screening as having pre-diabetes have some efficacy in preventing or delaying onset of type 2 diabetes in trial populations. As screening is inaccurate, many people will receives an incorrect diagnosis and be referred on for interventions while others will be falsely reassured and not offered the intervention. These findings suggest that "screen and treat" policies alone are unlikely to have substantial impact on the worsening epidemic of type 2 diabetes. REGISTRATION: PROSPERO (No CRD42016042920)
