Demonstrating Universal Scaling in Quench Dynamics of a Yukawa One-Component Plasma
The Yukawa one-component plasma (OCP) is a paradigm model for describing
plasmas that contain one component of interest and one or more other components
that can be treated as a neutralizing, screening background. In appropriately
scaled units, interactions are characterized entirely by a screening parameter,
. As a result, systems of similar show the same dynamics,
regardless of the underlying parameters (e.g., density and temperature). We
demonstrate this behavior using ultracold neutral plasmas (UNP) created by
photoionizing a cold ( mK) gas. The ions in UNP systems are well
described by the Yukawa model, with the electrons providing the screening.
Creation of the plasma through photoionization can be thought of as a rapid
quench from to a final value set by the electron
density and temperature. We demonstrate experimentally that the post-quench
dynamics are universal in over a factor of 30 in density and an order
of magnitude in temperature. Results are compared with molecular dynamics
simulations. We also demonstrate that features of the post-quench kinetic
energy evolution, such as disorder-induced heating and kinetic-energy
oscillations, can be used to determine the plasma density and the electron
temperature.Comment: 10 pages, 12 figures, to be submitted to Physical Review

Financing patterns around the world: Are small firms different?
Using a firm-level survey database covering 48 countries, we investigate how financial and institutional development affects financing of large and small firms. Our database is not limited to large firms but includes small and medium-size firms and data on a broad spectrum of financing sources, including leasing, supplier, development, and informal finance. Small firms and firms in countries with poor institutions use less external finance, especially bank finance. Protection of property rights increases external financing of small firms significantly more than of large firms, mainly due to its effect on bank finance. Small firms do not use disproportionately more leasing or trade finance compared with larger firms, so these financing sources do not compensate for lower access to bank financing of small firms. We also find that larger firms more easily expand external financing when they are constrained than small firms. Finally, we find suggestive evidence that the pecking order holds across countries
Coexistence of orbital and quantum critical magnetoresistance in FeSeS
The recent discovery of a non-magnetic nematic quantum critical point (QCP)
in the iron chalcogenide family FeSeS has raised the prospect of
investigating, in isolation, the role of nematicity on the electronic
properties of correlated metals. Here we report a detailed study of the normal
state transverse magnetoresistance (MR) in FeSeS for a series of
S concentrations spanning the nematic QCP. For all temperatures and
extit{x}-values studied, the MR can be decomposed into two distinct
components: one that varies quadratically in magnetic field strength
and one that follows precisely the quadrature scaling form
recently reported in metals at or close to a QCP and characterized by a
extit{H}-linear MR over an extended field range. The two components evolve
systematically with both temperature and S-substitution in a manner that is
determined by their proximity to the nematic QCP. This study thus reveals
unambiguously the coexistence of two independent charge sectors in a quantum
critical system. Moreover, the quantum critical component of the MR is found to
be less sensitive to disorder than the quadratic (orbital) MR, suggesting that
detection of the latter in previous MR studies of metals near a QCP may have
been obscured.Comment: 19 pages (including Supplemental Material), 12 figure
Solar Orbiter Strategies for EMC Control and Verification
Solar Orbiter, due for launch in February 2020, is an ESA mission to investigate how the Sun creates and controls the heliosphere. Solar Orbiter will combine insitu particle and field measurements with remote sensing observations of the Sun taken as close as 0.28AU (astronomical units). In order to make in-situ measurements, particularly at particle kinetic scales, it is necessary to establish and maintain control of the electro-static (ESC) and electro-magnetic compatibility (EMC), between platform and instruments alike. We present the strategies employed in the ESC/EMC control of the Solar Orbiter mission, touching on the properties of key equipment such as the Solar Arrays, Reaction Wheels and Instrument Boom (I-Boom), and the proposed verification methodology for the system level EMC test campaign due to take place in 2019
Identifying boosted new physics with non-isolated leptons
We demonstrate the utility of leptons which fail standard isolation criteria
in searches for new physics at the LHC. Such leptons can arise in any event
containing a highly boosted particle which decays to both leptons and quarks.
We begin by considering multiple extensions to the Standard Model which
primarily lead to events with non-isolated leptons and are therefore missed by
current search strategies. We emphasize the failure of standard isolation
variables to adequately discriminate between signal and SM background for any
value of the isolation cuts. We then introduce a new approach which makes use
of jet substructure techniques to distinguish a broad range of signals from QCD
events. We proceed with a simulated, proof-of-principle search for R-parity
violating supersymmetry to demonstrate both the experimental reach possible
with the use of non-isolated leptons and the utility of new substructure
variables over existing techniquesComment: 15 pages plus references, 11 figures; references adde
The Role of Psychological Factors in Judo: A Systematic Review
(1) Background: Psychological parameters are relevant in the practice of judo. Previous studies have shown that parameters such as anxiety or motivation can have a negative or positive impact on the athlete’s performance and general well-being, depending on the athlete’s perception. This systematic review aimed to summarize the studies examining the influence of various psychological parameters on well-being and performance in judo athletes; (2) Methods: We followed preferred reporting elements for systematic reviews and meta-analyses. We searched the Web of Science database for studies that explained the role of these parameters in elite athletes. Of the 286 articles initially identified, 17 met our eligibility criteria and were included in the review. In total, we analyzed data from 721 judo athletes; (3) Results: The studies found have demonstrated the impact of various psychological parameters during high-level performance and how these parameters can influence and lead an athlete to win or lose a competition. The feelings of tension, anger, anxiety, and nervousness were significantly increased in athletes who were facing defeat, while a decrease in the same segments and an increase in motivation among athletes who were experiencing better performance was observed. Further research under standardized conditions is needed to better understand the effects of these parameters on judo athletes; (4) Conclusions: Considering the athlete’s psychological state can affect performance, and it is therefore important to monitor and train these factors
Rapid weight loss habits before a competition in sambo athletes
Background: Like other combat sports, sambo has competition rules that divide athletes into categories based on gender, age and weight. Athletes in combat sports often resort to rapid weight loss (RWL) methods to be more competitive in lower weight categories and gain an advantage against lighter, smaller and weaker competitors. The aim of this study was to examine the methodology implemented by two different sambo age categories, junior and senior athletes, in order to attain RWL. Methods: The sample consisted of 103 male sambo elite athletes (seniors/juniors: age 28.5 ± 4.3/18.9 ± 0.8; height (m): 1.7 ± 0.1/1.8 ± 0.1; weight (kg): 76.3 ± 17.8/74.4 ± 16.3; BMI (kg/m2): 25.0 ± 3.8/23.7 ± 3.9) who completed a survey on RWL. Results: Athletes reported losing a mean of 5 kg starting approximately 12 days before a competition. The most common methodology reported by senior and junior sambo athletes was gradually increasing dieting, followed by sauna and plastic suit training. Less common methods adopted were laxatives, diuretics, the use of diet pills and vomiting. There were significant group differences for sauna and diet pill ingestion. Coaches and parents are influential people in the lives of athletes concerning the weight loss strategy to be adopted. Conclusions: This studyâs results unequivocally confirm the prevalent practice of RWL in both senior and junior sambo athletes. Although athletes prevalently chose âless harmfulâ methods, there is a need to inform parents and coaches of the risks and benefits of RWL
In-flight calibration of STEREO-B/WAVES antenna system
The STEREO/WAVES (SWAVES) experiment on board the two STEREO spacecraft
(Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory) launched on 25 October 2006 is
dedicated to the measurement of the radio spectrum at frequencies between a few
kilohertz and 16 MHz. The SWAVES antenna system consists of 6 m long orthogonal
monopoles designed to measure the electric component of the radio waves. With
this configuration direction finding of radio sources and polarimetry (analysis
of the polarization state) of incident radio waves is possible. For the
evaluation of the SWAVES data the receiving properties of the antennas,
distorted by the radiation coupling with the spacecraft body and other onboard
devices, have to be known accurately. In the present context, these properties
are described by the antenna effective length vectors. We present the results
of an in-flight calibration of the SWAVES antennas using the observations of
the nonthermal terrestrial auroral kilometric radiation (AKR) during STEREO
roll maneuvers in an early stage of the mission. A least squares method
combined with a genetic algorithm was applied to find the effective length
vectors of the STEREO Behind (STEREO-B)/WAVES antennas in a quasi-static
frequency range () which fit best to the model
and observed AKR intensity profiles. The obtained results confirm the former
SWAVES antenna analysis by rheometry and numerical simulations. A final set of
antenna parameters is recommended as a basis for evaluations of the SWAVES
data
A Search for Variations of Fundamental Constants using Atomic Fountain Clocks
Over five years we have compared the hyperfine frequencies of 133Cs and 87Rb
atoms in their electronic ground state using several laser cooled 133Cs and
87Rb atomic fountains with an accuracy of ~10^{-15}. These measurements set a
stringent upper bound to a possible fractional time variation of the ratio
between the two frequencies : (d/dt)ln(nu_Rb/nu_Cs)=(0.2 +/- 7.0)*10^{-16}
yr^{-1} (1 sigma uncertainty). The same limit applies to a possible variation
of the quantity (mu_Rb/mu_Cs)*alpha^{-0.44}, which involves the ratio of
nuclear magnetic moments and the fine structure constant.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, 1 table submitted to Phys. Rev. Let
