    The StarScan plate measuring machine: overview and calibrations

    The StarScan machine at the U.S. Naval Observatory (USNO) completed measuring photographic astrograph plates to allow determination of proper motions for the USNO CCD Astrograph Catalog (UCAC) program. All applicable 1940 AGK2 plates, about 2200 Hamburg Zone Astrograph plates, 900 Black Birch (USNO Twin Astrograph) plates, and 300 Lick Astrograph plates have been measured. StarScan comprises of a CCD camera, telecentric lens, air-bearing granite table, stepper motor screws, and Heidenhain scales to operate in a step-stare mode. The repeatability of StarScan measures is about 0.2 micrometer. The CCD mapping as well as the global table coordinate system has been calibrated using a special dot calibration plate and the overall accuracy of StarScan x,y data is derived to be 0.5 micrometer. Application to real photographic plate data shows that position information of at least 0.65 micrometer accuracy can be extracted from course grain 103a-type emulsion astrometric plates. Transformations between "direct" and "reverse" measures of fine grain emulsion plate measures are obtained on the 0.3 micrometer level per well exposed stellar image and coordinate, which is at the limit of the StarScan machine.Comment: 24 pages, 8 figures, accepted for PAS

    A cross sectional study of ā€˜care left undoneā€™ on nursing shifts in hospitals

    Aims: To determine factors associated with variation in ā€˜care left undoneā€™ (also referred to as ā€œmissed careā€) by registered nurses in acute hospital wards in Sweden. Background: ā€˜Care left undoneā€™ has been examined as a factor mediating the relationship between nurse staffing and patient outcomes. The context has not previously been explored to determine what other factors are associated with variation in ā€˜care left undoneā€™ by registered nurses. Design: Cross-sectional survey to explore the association of registered nurse staffing and contextual factors such as time of shift, nursing role and patient acuity / dependency on ā€˜care left undoneā€™ was examined using multi-level logistic regression. Methods: A survey of 10,174 registered nurse working on general medical and surgical wards in 79 acute care hospitals in Sweden (Jan-March 2010). Results: 74% of nurses reported some care was left undone on their last shift. The time of shift, patient mix, nursesā€™ role, practice environment, and staffing have a significant relationship with care left undone. The odds of care being left undone is halved on shifts where registered nurse care for 6 patients or fewer compared with shifts where they care for 10 or more. Conclusion: The previously observed relationship between registered nurse staffing and care left undone is confirmed. Reports of care left undone is influenced by registered nurse roles. Support worker staffing has little effect. Research is needed to identify how these factors relate to one another and whether care left undone is a predictor of adverse patient outcomes. <br/

    The second US Naval Observatory CCD Astrograph Catalog (UCAC2)

    The second USNO CCD Astrograph Catalog, UCAC2 was released in July 2003. Positions and proper motions for 48,330,571 sources (mostly stars) are available on 3 CDs, supplemented with 2MASS photometry for 99.5% of the sources. The catalog covers the sky area from -90 to +40 degrees declination, going up to +52 in some areas; this completely supersedes the UCAC1 released in 2001. Current epoch positions are obtained from observations with the USNO 8-inch Twin Astrograph equipped with a 4k CCD camera. The precision of the positions are 15 to 70 mas, depending on magnitude, with estimated systematic errors of 10 mas or below. Proper motions are derived by utilizing over 140 ground-and space-based catalogs, including Hipparcos/Tycho, the AC2000.2, as well as yet unpublished re-measures of the AGK2 plates and scans from the NPM and SPM plates. Proper motion errors are about 1 to 3 mas/yr for stars to 12th magnitude, and about 4 to 7 mas/yr for fainter stars to 16th magnitude.     Heating the hot atmospheres of galaxy groups and clusters with cavities: the relationship between jet power and low-frequency radio emission

    We present scaling relations between jet power and radio power measured using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT), Chandra and XMM-Newton, for a sample of 9 galaxy groups combined with the Birzan et al. sample of clusters. Cavity power is used as a proxy for mechanical jet power. Radio power is measured at 235 MHz and 1.4 GHz, and the integrated 10 MHz-10 GHz radio luminosity is estimated from the GMRT 610-235 MHz spectral index. The use of consistently analysed, high resolution low-frequency radio data from a single observatory makes the radio powers for the groups more reliable than those used by previous studies, and the combined sample covers 6-7 decades in radio power and 5 decades in cavity power. We find a relation of the form Pjet proportional to Lradio^~0.7 for integrated radio luminosity, with a total scatter of sigma_Lrad=0.63 and an intrinsic scatter of sigma_i,Lrad=0.59. A similar relation is found for 235 MHz power, but a slightly flatter relation with greater scatter is found for 1.4 GHz power, suggesting that low-frequency or broad band radio measurements are superior jet power indicators. We find our low-frequency relations to be in good agreement with previous observational results. Comparison with jet models shows reasonable agreement, which may be improved if radio sources have a significant low-energy electron population. We consider possible factors which could bias our results or render them more uncertain, and find that correcting for such factors in those groups we are able to study in detail leads to a flattening of the Pjet:Lradio relation.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ, 7 pages, 3 figure

    Saturation in Liquid/Gas Coalescence

    The problem was to construct a mathematical model for a liquid/gas coalescer, in order that the model could be analyzed to find combinations of parameters that would minimize the effects of saturation. The team has developed three complementary models, each with different strengths and weaknesses so that, depending on the information desired, one model may be more useful than another. The three models are: 1. A continuum model giving a macroscopic description of the filter. The governing equations are derived from first-principle consider- ations of conservation of mass and momentum. Constitutive relations for this model are derived by considering the processes going on in the filter at a microscopic level. 2. A stochastic model based on a Markov Decision Process. Each droplet is modelled as a single entity that can merge or move stochastically. This leads to a Markov simulation of the filter and the computation of average quantities. 3. A Lattice-Boltzmann model. The droplets are modelled to interact with each other and with the filter, using a Boltzmann distribution for their speed. This simulates the hydrodynamic behaviour of the droplet inside the filter

Ā© 2018 ESO.Radio continuum (RC) emission in galaxies allows us to measure star formation rates (SFRs) unaffected by extinction due to dust, of which the low-frequency part is uncontaminated from thermal (free-free) emission. We calibrate the conversion from the spatially resolved 140 MHz RC emission to the SFR surface density (Ī£SFR\Sigma_{\rm SFR}) at 1 kpc scale. We used recent observations of three galaxies (NGC 3184, 4736, and 5055) from the LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey (LoTSS), and archival LOw-Frequency ARray (LOFAR) data of NGC 5194. Maps were created with the facet calibration technique and converted to radio Ī£SFR\Sigma_{\rm SFR} maps using the Condon relation. We compared these maps with hybrid Ī£SFR\Sigma_{\rm SFR} maps from a combination of GALEX far-ultraviolet and Spitzer 24 Ī¼m\mu\rm m data using plots tracing the relation at 1.2Ɨ1.21.2\times 1.2-kpc2^2 resolution. The RC emission is smoothed with respect to the hybrid Ī£SFR\Sigma_{\rm SFR} owing to the transport of cosmic-ray electrons (CREs). This results in a sublinear relation (Ī£SFR)RCāˆ[(Ī£SFR)hyb]a(\Sigma_{\rm SFR})_{\rm RC} \propto [(\Sigma_{\rm SFR})_{\rm hyb}]^{a}, where a=0.59Ā±0.13a=0.59\pm 0.13 (140 MHz) and a=0.75Ā±0.10a=0.75\pm 0.10 (1365 MHz). Both relations have a scatter of Ļƒ=0.3Ā dex\sigma = 0.3~\rm dex. If we restrict ourselves to areas of young CREs (Ī±>āˆ’0.65\alpha > -0.65; IĪ½āˆĪ½Ī±I_\nu \propto \nu^\alpha), the relation becomes almost linear at both frequencies with aā‰ˆ0.9a\approx 0.9 and a reduced scatter of Ļƒ=0.2Ā dex\sigma = 0.2~\rm dex. We then simulate the effect of CRE transport by convolving the hybrid Ī£SFR\Sigma_{\rm SFR} maps with a Gaussian kernel until the RC-SFR relation is linearised; CRE transport lengths are l=1l=1-5 kpc. Solving the CRE diffusion equation, we find diffusion coefficients of D=(0.13D=(0.13-1.5)Ɨ1028cm2ā€‰sāˆ’11.5) \times 10^{28} \rm cm^2\,s^{-1} at 1 GeV. A RC-SFR relation at 1.41.4 GHz can be exploited to measure SFRs at redshift zā‰ˆ10z \approx 10 using 140140 MHz observations.Peer reviewe

    Optimising background-limited observing during bright-moon phases and twilight

    For the majority of optical observing programs, the sky brightness provides the fundamental limit to signal detection such that the scientific feasibility is largely dictated by the moon phase. Since most observatories do not have the resources to build expensive high-resolution or infrared instruments, they are increasingly at a loss as to how to exploit bright time. We show that, with due consideration of the field and moon position, it is possible to undertake `dark time' observing programs under `bright time' conditions. Our recommendations are particularly appropriate to all-sky survey programs. In certain instances, there are gains in observing efficiency with the use of a polariser, which can significantly reduce the moonlight (or twilight) sky-background flux relative to an extraterrestrial flux. These gains are possible in background-limited cases because the sky background can be highly polarised, due to scattering, around ninety degrees away from the moon (or sun).     First look at the giant radio galaxy 3C 236 with LOFAR

    We have examined the giant radio galaxy 3C 236 using LOFAR at 143 MHz down to an angular resolution of 7ā€³, in combination with observations at higher frequencies. We used the low frequency data to derive spectral index maps with the highest resolution yet at these low frequencies. We confirm a previous detection of an inner hotspot in the north-west lobe and for the first time observe that the south-east lobe hotspot is in fact a triple hotspot, which may point to an intermittent source activity. Also, the spectral index map of 3C 236 shows that the spectral steepening at the inner region of the northern lobe is prominent at low frequencies. The outer regions of both lobes show spectral flattening, in contrast with previous high frequency studies. We derive spectral age estimates for the lobes, as well as particle densities of the IGM at various locations. We propose that the morphological differences between the lobes are driven by variations in the ambient medium density as well as the source activity history
