Free energy of an SU(2) monopole-antimonopole pair
We induce an external monopole-antimonopole pair in an SU(2) lattice
gauge system and measure its free energy as a way to probe the vacuum

Potential between external monopole and antimonopole in SU(2) lattice glu odynamics
We present the results of a study of the free energy of a monopole pair in
pure
SU(2) theory at finite temperature, both below and above the deconfinement
tran sition. We find a Yukawa potential between monopoles in both phases. At
low temp erature, the screening mass is compatible with the lightest glueball
mass. At hi gh temperature, we observe an increased screening mass with no

Rethinking place and the social work office in the delivery of children's social work services
Limited attention has been given to the concept of place in social work research and practice. This paper draws on the national evaluation of social work practices (SWPs) in England undertaken between 2009 and 2012. SWPs were pilot organisations providing independent social work services for children in out-of-home care in five sites. One factor distinguishing some of these pilots was their attention to place. The evaluation employed a mixed methods approach and we use data from interviews with 121 children and young people in out-of-home care, 19 birth parents and 31 interviews with SWP staff which explored their views and experiences of the SWP offices. Children and young people
were alert to the stigma which could attach to social work premises and appreciated offices which were planned and furnished to appear less institutional and more ânormalâ. Daily interactions with staff which conveyed a sense of recognition and value to service users also contributed to a view of some SWP offices as accessible and welcoming places. Both children and parents appreciated offices that provided fun activities that positioned them as active rather than passive. Staff valued opportunities for influencing planning decisions about offices and place
was seen to confer a value on them as well as on service users. However, not all the SWPs were able to achieve these aspects of place, and engaging children and families in place was less likely when the service user population was widely dispersed. Recognising the importance of place and how place is constructed through relationships between people as well as through the physical environment appeared to be key to creating offices that combated the stigma attached to out-of-home care.

Free energy of an SU(2) monopole-antimonopole pair
We present a high-statistic numerical study of the free energy of a
monopole-antimonopole pair in pure SU(2) theory. We find that the
monopole-antimonopole interaction potential exhibits a screened behavior, as
one would expect in presence of a monopole condensate. Screening occurs both in
the low-temperature, confining phase of the theory, and in the high-temperature
deconfined phase, with no evidence of a discontinuity of the screening mass
across the transition. The mass of the object responsible for the screening at
low temperature is approximately twice the established value for the lightest
glueball, indicating a prevalent coupling to glueball excitations. At high
temperature, the screening mass increases. We contrast the behavior of the
quantum system with that of the corresponding classical system, where the
monopole-antimonopole potential is of the Coulomb type.Comment: Latex, 22 pages, 8 figures. A mistake in the computer program

Renormalization Group Study of the soliton mass on the (lambda Phi^4)_{1+1} lattice model
We compute, on the model on the lattice, the soliton
mass by means of two very different numerical methods. First, we make use of a
``creation operator'' formalism, measuring the decay of a certain correlation
function. On the other hand we measure the shift of the vacuum energy between
the symmetric and the antiperiodic systems. The obtained results are fully
compatible.
We compute the continuum limit of the mass from the perturbative
Renormalization Group equations. Special attention is paid to ensure that we
are working on the scaling region, where physical quantities remain unchanged
along any Renormalization Group Trajectory. We compare the continuum value of
the soliton mass with its perturbative value up to one loop calculation. Both
quantities show a quite satisfactory agreement. The first is slightly bigger
than the perturbative one; this may be due to the contributions of higher order

Economics of education research: a review and future prospects
In this paper we offer an appraisal of the economics of education research area, charting its history as a field and discussing the ways in which economists have contributed both to education research and to education policy-making. In particular, we highlight the theoretical and methodological contributions that economists have made to the field of education during the last 50 years. Despite the success of the economics of education as a field of inquiry, we argue that some of the contributions made by economists could be limited if the economics of education is seen as quite distinct from the other disciplines working in the field of education. In these areas of common interest, economists need to work side by side with the other major disciplines in the field of education if their contribution to the field is to be maximised, particularly in terms of applying improved methodology. We conclude that the study of education acquisition and its economic and social impact in the economics of education research area is very likely to remain a fertile research ground. Acknowledgement
The Johnson-Segalman model with a diffusion term in Couette flow
We study the Johnson-Segalman (JS) model as a paradigm for some complex
fluids which are observed to phase separate, or ``shear-band'' in flow. We
analyze the behavior of this model in cylindrical Couette flow and demonstrate
the history dependence inherent in the local JS model. We add a simple gradient
term to the stress dynamics and demonstrate how this term breaks the degeneracy
of the local model and prescribes a much smaller (discrete, rather than
continuous) set of banded steady state solutions. We investigate some of the
effects of the curvature of Couette flow on the observable steady state
behavior and kinetics, and discuss some of the implications for metastability.Comment: 14 pp, to be published in Journal of Rheolog
Healthcare choice: Discourses, perceptions, experiences and practices
Policy discourse shaped by neoliberal ideology, with its emphasis on marketisation and competition, has highlighted the importance of choice in the context of healthcare and health systems globally. Yet, evidence about how so-called consumers perceive and experience healthcare choice is in short supply and limited to specific healthcare systems, primarily in the Global North. This special issue aims to explore how choice is perceived and utilised in the context of different systems of healthcare throughout the world, where choice, at least in policy and organisational terms, has been embedded for some time. The articles are divided into those emphasising: embodiment and the meaning of choice; social processes associated with choice; the uncertainties, risks and trust involved in making choices; and issues of access and inequality associated with enacting choice. These sociological studies reveal complexities not always captured in policy discourse and suggest that the commodification of healthcare is particularly problematic
Interaction of reed and acoustic resonator in clarinetlike systems
Sound emergence in clarinetlike instruments is investigated in terms of
instability of the static regime. Various models of reed-bore coupling are
considered, from the pioneering work of Wilson and Beavers ["Operating modes of
the clarinet", J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 56, 653--658 (1974)] to more recent modeling
including viscothermal bore losses and vena contracta at the reed inlet. The
pressure threshold above which these models may oscillate as well as the
frequency of oscillation at threshold are calculated. In addition to Wilson and
Beavers' previous conclusions concerning the role of the reed damping in the
selection of the register the instrument will play on, the influence of the
reed motion induced flow is also emphasized, particularly its effect on playing
frequencies, contributing to reduce discrepancies between Wilson and Beavers'
experimental results and theory, despite discrepancies still remain concerning
the pressure threshold. Finally, analytical approximations of the oscillating
solution based on Fourier series expansion are obtained in the vicinity of the
threshold of oscillation. This allows to emphasize the conditions which
determine the nature of the bifurcation (direct or inverse) through which the
note may emerge, with therefore important consequences on the musical playing
performances
