INTERSECTIONAL MICROAGGRESSIONS AND DISORDERED EATING IN ASIAN AMERICAN WOMEN
Disordered eating in college-age women is well-documented. Less is known about minoritized populations and disordered eating for college-age women, especially Asian American women. As Asian Americans are often subjected to the “model minority” myth, less research has been dedicated to understanding disordered eating for this population. Small, everyday slights motivated by the model minority myth and other racial stereotypes are known as microaggressions. Asian American women hold an intersectional identity that places them at risk for experiencing microaggressions from their identity as both a woman and as an Asian American. The purpose of this study was to examine relationships between gendered racial microaggressions, appearance investment, and disordered eating among female Asian American students in the US. The study results provide more information about critical factors that could be explored in further research, as well as highlighting how unique, intersectional experiences predict the development of disordered eating and body image concerns. Significant findings suggest that gendered racial microaggression experiences predict disordered eating for Asian American college women, as higher reports of gendered racial microaggressions predicted increased disordered eating levels when accounting for demographic variables. Additionally, higher levels of appearance investment also predicted increased disordered eating. This study provides evidence related to how unique experiences of gendered racial microaggressions relate to disordered eating and body image investment for this population

Matrix modification for enhancing the transport properties of the human cartilage endplate to improve disc nutrition.
Poor solute transport through the cartilage endplate (CEP) impairs disc nutrition and could be a key factor that limits the success of intradiscal biologic therapies. Here we demonstrate that treating the CEP with matrix metalloproteinase-8 (MMP-8) reduces the matrix constituents that impede solute uptake and thereby improves nutrient diffusion. Human CEP tissues harvested from four fresh cadaveric lumbar spines (age range: 38-66 years old) were treated with MMP-8. Treatment caused a dose-dependent reduction in sGAG, localized reductions to the amount of collagen, and alterations to collagen structure. These matrix modifications corresponded with 16-24% increases in the uptake of a small solute (376 Da). Interestingly, the effects of MMP-8 treatment depended on the extent of non-enzymatic glycation: treated CEPs with high concentrations of advanced glycation end products (AGEs) exhibited the lowest uptake compared to treated CEPs with low concentrations of AGEs. Moreover, AGE concentrations were donor-specific, and the donor tissues with the highest AGE concentrations appeared to have lower uptake than would be expected based on the initial amounts of collagen and sGAG. Finally, increasing solute uptake in the CEP improved cell viability inside diffusion chambers, which supports the nutritional relevance of enhancing the transport properties of the CEP. Taken together, our results provide new insights and in vitro proof-of-concept for a treatment approach that could improve disc nutrition for biologic therapy: specifically, matrix reduction by MMP-8 can enhance solute uptake and nutrient diffusion through the CEP, and AGE concentration appears to be an important, patient-specific factor that influences the efficacy of this approach

George Crumb - between reflection upon nature and contemplating it
The author investigates the unique aesthetic program of George Crumb, one of the most important contemporary American composers. Crumb certainly occupies a unique place in the music of 20th century, not only because of his cultural background, or originality of artistic expression, but first of all, due to the presence of most dilemmas of the contemporary culture in his music. The question about the form of a relationship between human beings and nature at the turn of 20th/2ist century is one of them. In his artistic output Crumb remains an advocate of a concept of music which, as the most spiritual and magical of all arts, derives from deep reserves of human psyche on the one hand and from primal forces of nature, on the other one. The analytical aspects of the paper concern the problems of onomatopoeic imitation of the sounds of birds and a whale, symbolic allusions to the other composers (Debussy, Mahler), the concept of “larger rhythms of nature”, the phenomenon of echo and its forms in Crumb’s music, his search of natural pre-sounds of music (resulting in using non-traditional instruments), the idea of distant music, etc. Especially three pieces: An Idyll of the Misbegotten, Vox balaenae and Echoes of Time and the River are considered as the most characteristic
Frank Martin’s Interpretation of the Tristan and Isolde Myth: Following the Trail of a Certain Novel
Pisarstwo kompozytora jako egzegeza jego twórczości. Przypadek szczególny: Roman Berger
Autorka w swojej pracy stara się scharakteryzować pisarstwo Romana Bergera, wybitnego kompozytora urodzonego w 1930 r. Badaczka określa je mianem „szeroko pojętej filozofii muzyki lub muzykologię o szczególnym nachyleniu w kierunku estetyki z jednej strony, a ontologii z drugiej”.Udostępnienie publikacji Wydawnictwa Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego finansowane w ramach projektu „Doskonałość naukowa kluczem do doskonałości kształcenia”.
