Relationship between thoracic kyphosis and neural axis abnormalities in patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.
Purpose:Previous studies have suggested an association between increased thoracic kyphosis and neural axis abnormalities in patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). However, the basis for this finding is unclear, and this association has been mainly noted in retrospective studies on a non-consecutive series of patients. The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between thoracic kyphosis and neural axis abnormalities in patients with AIS. Methods:We studied a consecutive series of AIS patients treated with spinal fusion. Thoracic kyphosis (T2 to T12) was measured from preoperative lateral radiographs. All patients underwent a spine magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) prior to surgery, and MRI reports were reviewed to determine the presence of neural axis abnormalities. Statistical analyses included descriptive statistics and chi-squared analysis. Results:This study included 210 patients with AIS. There were no significant differences in age or gender between patients with thoracic hypokyphosis (kyphosis < 20°), normal thoracic kyphosis (kyphosis 20° to 40°) and thoracic hyperkyphosis (kyphosis > 40°) (p > 0.05). Neural axis abnormalities were present in 17.9% of patients with thoracic hypokyphosis, 9.8% of patients with normal thoracic kyphosis and 13.6% of patients with thoracic hyperkyphosis (p = 0.60). There were no significant differences in rates of Chiari malformation, syrinx, intra-spinal masses and other central nervous system abnormalities between groups (p > 0.05). Conclusions:Thoracic kyphosis was not associated with neural axis abnormalities in our consecutive series of patients with AIS. Increased thoracic kyphosis may not be a reliable indicator for the presence of neural axis abnormalities in patients with AIS. Level of Evidence:IV
Dilepton Signal of a Type-II Seesaw at CERN LHC: Reveals a TeV Scale B-L Symmetry
We explore the discovery potential of doubly charged Higgs bosons
(\xi^{\pm\pm}) at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). For moderate values of
the coupling constants in the original Type-II seesaw model, these
doubly-charged Higgs bosons are not accessible by any present or near future
collider experiments. In a gauged B-L symmetric model we introduce two triplet
scalars to execute a variant of type-II seesaw at the TeV scale. This leads to
a clear like-sign dilepton signal in the decay mode of \xi^{\pm\pm} for a small
vacuum expectation value (\lsim 10^5 \eV) of the triplet scalar \xi= (\xi^{++},
\xi^+, \xi^0) of mass \lsim 1 \TeV. To be specific, for a mass range of
200-1000 GeV of \xi^{\pm\pm}, the like-sign dilepton signal can be detected at
CERN LHC at a center of mass energy 14 TeV with an integrated luminosity > 30
{\rm fb}^{-1}. The same analysis is also pursued with center of mass energies 7
TeV and 10 TeV as well. We also comment on the decay mode of singly charged
scalars and neutral B-L gauge boson in this model.Comment: Minor change in Introduction, Z' contribution to the production of

Propionibacterium acnes infections in patients with idiopathic scoliosis: a case-control study and review of the literature.
Purpose:Surgical site infection (SSI) caused by Propionibacterium acnes is an infrequent but devastating complication after spinal fusion. The purpose of this study was to identify risk factors for SSI with Propionibacterium acnes after spinal fusion for juvenile and adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (JIS and AIS). Methods:A case-control study was performed. Each case was matched 2:1 for age, gender and diagnosis. Retrospective chart review was performed to obtain relevant demographic, surgical and clinical data for all cases and controls. Statistical analysis included paired t-test and McNemar test, as well as exact logistic regression and robust regression models. Results:This study included ten infection cases (eight AIS, two JIS) and 20 controls (16 AIS, four JIS). In total, six infected cases presented within two weeks of the index procedure (acute infection) and four infected cases presented more than one year from the index procedure (delayed infection). The most common presentation for acute infections was wound drainage, while back pain was more common in delayed infections. All infections were successfully treated with surgical irrigation and debridement and postoperative antibiotics. Hardware was removed for patients with delayed infections. The strongest risk factor for infection was increased requirement for blood transfusion, but it did not reach statistical significance. Conclusion:SSI with Propionibacterium acnes is an important complication after spinal fusion for idiopathic scoliosis. These infections can be successfully treated, but larger studies are needed to further identify risk factors and establish standardized guidelines for the treatment and prevention of this complication. Using Gravitational Lensing to study HI clouds at high redshift
We investigate the possibility of detecting HI emission from gravitationally
lensed HI clouds (akin to damped Lyman- clouds) at high redshift by
carrying out deep radio observations in the fields of known cluster lenses.
Such observations will be possible with present radio telescopes only if the
lens substantially magnifies the flux of the HI emission. While at present this
holds the only possibility of detecting the HI emission from such clouds, it
has the disadvantage of being restricted to clouds that lie very close to the
caustics of the lens. We find that observations at a detection threshold of 50
micro Jy at 320 MHz (possible with the GMRT) have a greater than 20%
probability of detecting an HI cloud in the field of a cluster, provided the
clouds have HI masses in the range 5 X 10^8 M_{\odot} < M_{HI} < 2.5 X 10^{10}
M_{\odot}. The probability of detecting a cloud increases if they have larger
HI masses, except in the cases where the number of HI clouds in the cluster
field becomes very small. The probability of a detection at 610 MHz and 233 MHz
is comparable to that at 320 MHz, though a definitive statement is difficult
owing to uncertainties in the HI content at the redshifts corresponding to
these frequencies. Observations at a detection threshold of 2 micro Jy
(possible in the future with the SKA) are expected to detect a few HI clouds in
the field of every cluster provided the clouds have HI masses in the range 2 X
10^7 M_{\odot} < M_{HI} < 10^9 M_{\odot}. Even if such observations do not
result in the detection of HI clouds, they will be able to put useful

A Multi-Wavelength High Resolution Study of the S255 Star Forming Region. General structure and kinematics
We present observational data for two main components (S255IR and S255N) of
the S255 high mass star forming region in continuum and molecular lines
obtained at 1.3 mm and 1.1 mm with the SMA, at 1.3 cm with the VLA and at 23
and 50 cm with the GMRT. The angular resolution was from ~ 2" to ~ 5" for all
instruments. With the SMA we detected a total of about 50 spectral lines of 20
different molecules (including isotopologues). About half of the lines and half
of the species (in particular N2H+, SiO, C34S, DCN, DNC, DCO+, HC3N, H2CO,
H2CS, SO2) have not been previously reported in S255IR and partly in S255N at
high angular resolution. Our data reveal several new clumps in the S255IR and
S255N areas by their millimeter wave continuum emission. Masses of these clumps
are estimated at a few solar masses. The line widths greatly exceed expected
thermal widths. These clumps have practically no association with NIR or radio
continuum sources, implying a very early stage of evolution. At the same time,
our SiO data indicate the presence of high-velocity outflows related to some of
these clumps. In some cases, strong molecular emission at velocities of the
quiescent gas has no detectable counterpart in the continuum. We discuss the
main features of the distribution of NH3, N2H+, and deuterated molecules. We
estimate properties of decimeter wave radio continuum sources and their

Soot Superaggregates from Flaming Wildfires and Their Direct Radiative Forcing
Wildfires contribute significantly to global soot emissions, yet their aerosol formation mechanisms and resulting particle properties are poorly understood and parameterized in climate models. The conventional view holds that soot is formed via the cluster-dilute aggregation mechanism in wildfires and emitted as aggregates with fractal dimension D(sub f) approximately equals 1.8 mobility diameter D(sub m) (is) less than or equal to 1 micron, and aerodynamic diameter D(sub a) (is) less than or equal to 300 nm. Here we report the ubiquitous presence of soot superaggregates (SAs) in the outflow from a major wildfire in India. SAs are porous, low-density aggregates of cluster-dilute aggregates with characteristic D(sub f) approximately equals 2.6,D(sub m) (is) greater than 1 micron, and D(sub a) is less than or equal to 300 nm that form via the cluster-dense aggregation mechanism.We present additional observations of soot SAs in wildfire smoke-laden air masses over Northern California, New Mexico, and Mexico City. We estimate that SAs contribute, per unit optical depth, up to 35% less atmospheric warming than freshly-emitted (D(sub f) approximately equals 1.8) aggregates, and approximately equals 90% more warming than the volume-equivalent spherical soot particles simulated in climate models
An Auxin Transport-Based Model of Root Branching in Arabidopsis thaliana
Root architecture is a crucial part of plant adaptation to soil heterogeneity and is mainly controlled by root branching. The process of root system development can be divided into two successive steps: lateral root initiation and lateral root development/emergence which are controlled by different fluxes of the plant hormone auxin. While shoot architecture appears to be highly regular, following rules such as the phyllotactic spiral, root architecture appears more chaotic. We used stochastic modeling to extract hidden rules regulating root branching in Arabidopsis thaliana. These rules were used to build an integrative mechanistic model of root ramification based on auxin. This model was experimentally tested using plants with modified rhythm of lateral root initiation or mutants perturbed in auxin transport. Our analysis revealed that lateral root initiation and lateral root development/emergence are interacting with each other to create a global balance between the respective ratio of initiation and emergence. A mechanistic model based on auxin fluxes successfully predicted this property and the phenotype alteration of auxin transport mutants or plants with modified rythms of lateral root initiation. This suggests that root branching is controlled by mechanisms of lateral inhibition due to a competition between initiation and development/emergence for auxin
Unraveling the nature of coherent pulsar radio emission
Forty years have passed since the discovery of pulsars, yet the physical
mechanism of their coherent radio emission is a mystery. Recent observational
and theoretical studies strongly suggest that the radiation outcoming from the
pulsar magnetosphere consists mainly of extraordinary waves polarized
perpendicular to the planes of pulsar dipolar magnetic field. However, the
fundamental question whether these waves are excited by maser or coherent
curvature radiation, remains open. High quality single pulse polarimetry is
required to distinguish between these two possible mechanisms. Here we showcase
such {\it decisive} strong single pulses from 10 pulsars observed with the
GMRT, showing extremely high linear polarization with the position angle
following locally the mean position angle traverse. These pulses, which are
relatively free from depolarization, must consist of exclusively single
polarization mode. We associate this mode with the extraordinary wave excited
by the coherent curvature radiation. This crucial observational signature
enables us to argue, for the first time, in favor of the coherent curvature

On the origin of the various types of radio emission in GRS 1915+105
We investigate the association between the radio ``plateau'' states and the
large superluminal flares in GRS 1915+105 and propose a qualitative scenario to
explain this association. We identify several candidate superluminal flare
events from available monitoring data on this source and analyze the
contemporaneous RXTE pointed observations. We detect a strong correlation
between the average X-ray flux during the ``plateau'' state and the total
energy emitted in radio during the subsequent radio flare. We find that the
sequence of events is similar for all large radio flares with a fast rise and
exponential decay morphology. Based on these results, we propose a qualitative
scenario in which the separating ejecta during the superluminal flares are
observed due to the interaction of the matter blob ejected during the X-ray
soft dips, with the steady jet already established during the ``plateau''
state. This picture can explain all types of radio emission observed from this

Auxin transport through non-hair cells sustains root-hair development.
The plant hormone auxin controls root epidermal cell development in a concentration-dependent manner. Root hairs are produced on a subset of epidermal cells as they increase in distance from the root tip. Auxin is required for their initiation and continued growth, but little is known about its distribution in this region of the root. Contrary to the expectation that hair cells might require active auxin influx to ensure auxin supply, we did not detect the auxin-influx transporter AUX1 in root-hair cells. A high level of AUX1 expression was detected in adjacent non-hair cell files. Non-hair cells were necessary to achieve wild-type root-hair length, although an auxin response was not required in these cells. Three-dimensional modelling of auxin flow in the root tip suggests that AUX1-dependent transport through non-hair cells maintains an auxin supply to developing hair cells as they increase in distance from the root tip, and sustains root-hair outgrowth. Experimental data support the hypothesis that instead of moving uniformly though the epidermal cell layer, auxin is mainly transported through canals that extend longitudinally into the tissue
