Entrepreneursâ Social Ties and International Digital Entrepreneurial Marketing in Small and Medium-Sized Enterprise Internationalization
Digitalization has enabled entrepreneurs to adopt digital tools to create opportunities and reach customers in international markets. Yet, the understanding of international digital entrepreneurial marketing in the global marketplace is limited. Drawing on social network theory, the authors investigate how entrepreneursâ social ties and firmsâ international digital entrepreneurial marketing influence small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) internationalization. Based on multiple case study methodology, the results suggest that entrepreneursâ bonding and bridging ties facilitate different dimensions of international digital entrepreneurial marketing. That further enhances the intensity and geographic scope of SME internationalization. SME internationalization also reinforces entrepreneursâ accumulation of social ties. This study contributes to international marketing research by developing the dimensions of the international digital entrepreneurial marketing concept and exploring its important role in SME internationalization.© The Author(s) 2023. Local horizontal network membership for accelerated global market reach
Purpose â The purpose of this paper is to explain how some born global firms can leverage the rich
social capital in their local (home country) horizontal network for accelerated international market entry
and growth. Horizontal networks warrant separate attention from their vertical counterparts, which, along
with those focussed on external international contexts, dominate most network studies in the realm of born
global research.
Design/methodology/approach â The study utilises a multi-level qualitative approach in the study of a
multi-firm population of animators in Ireland that, due to the small domestic market for their product, needed
to pursue global customers from inception. The case study domain was purposely selected as a critical
exemplar of a local horizontal network operating in a highly globalised industry. The authors collected data
through in-depth interviews with 16 company founders. This primary interview data were complemented by
interviews with staff at the apposite industry association and triangulated with secondary data on the local
and global industry conditions, membersâ international successes and awards.
Findings â The results demonstrate how active membership of a local horizontal network can be leveraged
for the acquisition of international market knowledge and customers for born global ventures. This arises
from the sharing of collective market knowledge and communal global customer information within the
network to mutual benefit.
Originality/value â Although limited by the specific conditions in this highly globalised, non-competitive
industry context, this study is unique in that it finds that cooperative interpersonal and inter-firm
relationships embedded in a local horizontal social network, and mediated in part by an institutional support
actor, emerge as important levers for a born globalâs accelerated acquisition of foreign market knowledge and
of global customer
Collaborative Public Management: Coordinated Value Propositions among Public Service Organisations
Drawing from collaborative public management, this article seeks to contribute to public service logic by focusing on what precedes the public service userâs realization of value: the value proposition. A new care model for elderly people with multiple chronic diseases shows that coordinators with an inter-organizational mission, vertical and horizontal supporting structures, trust established through relationships, and recognition of service systemsâ embeddedness in social systems are pivotal for the ability of public service organizations to develop coordinated value propositions. The contribution to policy and practice is an increased understanding of a coherent, rather than fragmented, welfare system for users/citizens
Velocidade e Longevidade: Elementos da Internacionalização de Empresas de Base Tecnológica
Is time perception an idiosyncratic element in the internationalization process of technology-based firms (TBFs)? This question serves as the starting point to explore which factors influence international operationsâ internationalization speed and longevity in TBFs. We gathered them into two groups based on the types of service provided and the characteristics of their clients. We analyzed these TBFsÂŽ internationalization processes and the length of time they continued operating abroad, considering survival over time. Using a qualitative approach, we conducted a multiple case study of four internationalized TBFs from Brazil. Our findings suggest that the level of creativity required by clients impacts both the speed of internationalization and the longevity of international operations. Regarding longevity and survival, while TBFs serving creative sectors tend to adapt more easily to culturally similar markets and develop products more quickly, TBFs working in traditional sectors tend to exploit local networks revealing exciting nuances about the time perception among TBFs.A percepção do tempo Ă© um elemento idiossincrĂĄtico do processo de internacionalização de empresas de base tecnolĂłgica (EBTs)?
Genes with Relevance for Early to Late Progression of Colon Carcinoma Based on Combined Genomic and Transcriptomic Information from the Same Patients
Background: Genetic and epigenetic alterations in colorectal cancer are numerous. However, it is difficult to judge whether such changes are primary or secondary to the appearance and progression of tumors. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to identify altered DNA regions with significant covariation to transcription alterations along colon cancer progression. Methods: Tumor and normal colon tissue were obtained at primary operations from 24 patients selected by chance. DNA, RNA and microRNAs were extracted from the same biopsy material in all individuals and analyzed by oligo-nucleotide array-based comparative genomic hybridization (CGH), mRNA- and microRNA oligo-arrays. Statistical analyses were performed to assess statistical interactions (correlations, co-variations) between DNA copy number changes and significant alterations in gene and microRNA expression using appropriate parametric and non-parametric statistics. Results: Main DNA alterations were located on chromosome 7, 8, 13 and 20. Tumor DNA copy number gain increased with tumor progression, significantly related to increased gene expression. Copy number loss was not observed in Dukes A tumors. There was no significant relationship between expressed genes and tumor progression across Dukes AâD tumors; and no relationship between tumor stage and the number of microRNAs with significantly altered expression. Interaction analyses identified overall 41 genes, which discriminated early Dukes A plus B tumors from late Dukes C plus D tumor; 28 of these genes remained with correlations between genomic and transcriptomic alterations in Dukes C plus D tumors and 17 in Dukes D. One microRNA (microR-663) showed interactions with DNA alterations in all Dukes A-D tumors. Conclusions: Our modeling confirms that colon cancer progression is related to genomic instability and altered gene expression. How- ever, early invasive tumor growth seemed rather related to transcriptomic alterations, where changes in microRNA may be an early phenomenon, and less to DNA copy number changes
Genetically modified (GM) late blight-resistant potato and consumer attitudes before and after a field visit
Late blight, caused by Phytophthora infestans, is the most devastating disease in potato production. Here, we show full late blight resistance in a location with a genetically diverse pathogen population with the use of GM potato stacked with three resistance (R) genes over three seasons. In addition, using this field trials, we demonstrate that in-the-field intervention among consumers led to change for more favorable attitude generally toward GM crops
